Ok now we officially have summer, which in my definition is more than 2 days without torrential downpours.

Ants and flies seem to be on the increase.

We have 2 flies in our house that have been are terrorising all occupants for the past 2 days.

I've had a couple of swatting attempts, I did manage to give one a good blast with some hairspray (messed the flies hair up, i think he has gone away to hide)

I have just managed whilst typing this (I think the fly was checking what i was typing)
to successfully swat the other one with a CD, HA!.

Now my mother likes the old fly paper hanging from the ceiling (Not a look I really like)

So what humane / inhumane methods does everyone have for repelling / killing pesky insects of the flying or crawling variety ?

I once met a girl, I was was in the deserts around Kuwait at the time. She used to lie on the sand with no clothes on and her legs as wide apart as she could, eating slices of melon. I asked her if this kept her cool, she said, "Not really, but it keeps the flies off my melon".

Don't know if this helps, but it makes me smile.

We have lots of flying ants round here, The council one year had to send guys out dressed in protective suits and spray the area....It was like a scene from a SciFi Film....
We all had to shut out doors and windows for hours...Hope it doesnt get that bad again...
Ive currently had a run in with a lot of spiders, who now seem immune with the chestnut oil spray, I recommended on another thread....hmmmmm
I use a lot of lavendar scented air fresheners which flys are not supposed to like the smell of so Im lucky...no flies here...Touch woood...
I think Im tempting fate saying this cos I just know Im gonna get hit with flies now they know the secret

A mixture of water and dishwashing liquid works wonders on ants and earwigs, and I am guessing many other crawling insects. I mix it up in a spray bottle and it kills ants and earwigs better than anything, and best part is No Chemicals so you do not have to worry about your children or pets. Do not ask me why it works, I can only guess the soap coats their body and suffocates them.

The insects ""DONT''' like vitamin BBBBBBzzzzz....... I bought a jar of MARMITE from the supermarket, put the jar on my kitchen window sill.... "MY MOSQUITOE, THE FLYS AND ALL THE GREENFLYS HAVE ALL GONE AWAY NOW!!!!!"....... (Try it, it WORKS!!!)

I got natural insect control, I have a Yukka in which I have a couple of pet house spiders living, I move the yukka into whichever room has the bothersome insect in and within moments said flying insect is being recycled.

VVV eek i'd have to get a dog ;-)

We have a rather wonderful weapon of mass insect destruction, Eduardo, he's excellent and has almost a 100% success rate.. He's a rather luscious and very healthy Venus Fly Trap...

One of kittens has discovered a liking for moths and flies, I'm hoping she also likes the taste of spiders too.
Before I got my kittens I hoovered up any insects.

I use these too. they are amazing. Within 2 hours the few flies i have hovering around our heads have gone and commited suiside by flying into them

Last summer i had LOTS of flies from a bush that was right outside my front room window. I hated it, so i asked my mother how i could get rid as i didnt wanna use fly spray due to my Asthma, she recommended the fly paper and i can tell you after 6-7 hours the paper was un-indated with flys.

Used to work in a kitchen and they had one of these electric fly zappers. so was with great delight we gathered round to watch latest wasp heading for it when bam he he had a heart attack.... but luckely the momentum carried him on into the zapper which zapped him and restarted his heart. Lucky fella hey...
No i agree with marmite it works and we have no ant nests in garden as we have chickens. as soon as a nest is discovered.. prefarably with the eggs we turn over the stone orwhatever its under and let the feasting begin.

Im scared of moths and quite surprised not to have seen any at all this summer
but if one dares to enter my home and starts flying around any light bulb like a
drunken sailor I have a good selection of weapons available to deal with it.

Ooooh I have had the most enormous spider in my bath this morning!!! Yuk, yuk, yuk, yuk, yuk. As you have probably gathered I hate them.

My remedy, ask a neighbour's workman to pop in and dispose of it for me!! How kind of him!!! I certainly wouldnt have been able to do it myself. Thank you Mr Workman, whatever your name is!

In Africa we always burned incense in the house to keep insects out - it works here too, even moths do not come in when the lights are on and windows open.

this thread has really made me laugh & brought back memories of my stepdad running around the house with an old badminton racket swatting the flies & wasps!

I tend to burn incense sticks sometimes or smelly candles, although the old badminton racket does come out occasionally to swat the buggers (or an old rolled up newspaper!)

i dont really mind insects or spiders,we have an agreement, they dont crawl down my mouth when i sleep, and il not hurt them.

but i hate when you walk, and you hear a "crunch"........that was a snail or slug you have flattened,i do feel bad,but not as bad as when my mate used to pour salt on them, almost like a wotsit, just melted away........

Cats. I've got 2 who love to kill any small animals thast come within range. Apart from slugs & those millipede type things, anyway. They don't eat the flies & somehow the carcasses are perfectly intact. I know one of my sister's cats achieves that by suffocating the flies in her mouth but I'm not sure if mine use the same method.

I had an absolute nightmare last night .. did not sleep the whole night as my house was invaded by wasps..

Firstly as we entered after a night out my friend noticed a wasp.. wouldn't kill it .. so it got thrown out of the window while I was panicking.

Then the wasp came back.. but I think it wasn't the same wasp..

By this time my friend left and I was alone.

Then around after midnight on I noticed a wasp under the kitchen table so I killed it and minutes later I noticed another one under the same table. Killed that one too.

The fifth was was just TOO MUCH for one night..

OMG.. at this point I was near to crying.. checked my bedroom inside out .. went to sleep and thought of wasps resulting me not being able to sleep the whole night..
