| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 5:36:04 PM | Hi Guys, My question to you all is why do some (not all) of the men state they are "athletic", yet when you look at their pics, with the beer belly hanging over, it's obviously a case of "A few extra pounds". Does doing arm lifts with beer bottles constitute exercise, making them "Athletic"? I mean a guy knows we are going to look at his pic if it is posted, so why try to deceive? Guys are so quick to judge a female if she has a few extra pounds and has "Average" listed, so why don't you do the same? Is it really all about the ego boost? | |

| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 5:43:11 PM | | Some men and some women write "athletic" because they play 1 or more sports I think. They may be "athletes" and in good shape but don't have an "athletic" body type. It can be confusing. | |

Thats me! I mean I'm quite lean and toned or one might say "fit" but I'm not exactly a body builder so I thought if I say average then to some it might sound I still got a belly or a bit out of shape which is not the case . I wish POF had another option as "fit" .
|
| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 5:56:26 PM | That's what I mean though. It clearly states "Body Type" when filling in their personal information. I mean at times I feel 30 again, but my body doesn't necessarily... :) | |
|
| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 5:57:45 PM | Hrmmm considering that the words next to the descriptor directly say "body type" then those that check athletic just because they play football once a month are uhhh fibbing perhaps. More responses! we must see why this occurs, come forth you beer guzzling guys, tell us why your pudgy poundage does not count. No hiding, do enlighten us :) (Imagine that in a british accent) | |

| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 6:08:27 PM | yes this confuses me a bit also.....some men clearly are not athletic and the ones that are kinda sorta minimize their hard work
I once saw a profile of a guy who was incredibly lean/ fit..."cut" so to speak and he put a few extra pounds. I wrote him to compliment him on his profile (overall) and suggested that he change his choice to 'athletic."
he preferred this as it kept certain women away...is what he said.
NOt sure what that means....but it's interesting isn't it//

| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 6:13:33 PM | To the Max you hit it perfectly "Fit"
I totally agree I wish they did have one, I mean I carry about 5 pounds over at all
times, I am athletic. I hike, average hike is 5 miles daily, kayak, play sports, etc. but I put a few extra pounds since to me Athletic means really awesome and average means to me kind out of shape and a saggy Butt, or a really bad jiggle when they walk. like alot of women in my age bracket.
|
| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 6:15:05 PM | Atheletic doesn't mean "Underwear Model"
It means you can play sports and not become a winded mess.
An example would be when I was doing heavy physical labour. The "muscle men" were useless at work and useless playing hockey after a few hours.
I think it's a bad way to describe your body type.
Fat, Skinny, Muscular, A few Extra Pounds. I think that covers it. Morbidly Obese could work too :p
|
| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 6:17:46 PM | I wouldn't know.
I've never lifted a beer in my life. (Well, I sipped one once...does that count?)
But I don't fit in either of those categories.
Why? Because I'm big AND tall.
6'2 almost 6'3 and 293 lbs (Just weighed myself earlier). I used to be around 310 lbs. Been losing gradually (Working outside, being a bit more active than usual, weights/exercise, eating a slight bit better.)
Technically I could fit under "A few extra pounds" but my height sticks me under Big and Tall.
Like another person stated, people usually put athletic, because they do some kind of workouts or sports or whatever.
How is it any different than a woman who puts down "athletic" just because she's doing workouts and she looks pudgy?
I think it's rather amusing that people just assume someone with a belly has a beer gut.
I've been big for most of my life. Even doing regular PT in the past, I was only able to achieve a weight of around 260 lbs.
A lot of mine is muscle, (yeah..covered by a bit of flab...woo boy.), but people just assume and call me "fat".
Ok then, think what you want. But I could probably pick you up and throw you with ease.
But eh. I didn't lie on my profile. Big and Tall it is. If people don't like it. Tough.

| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 6:34:09 PM | | Militia, you don't seem to be putting on a front about it tho. Other guys aren't doing the same. We had a big long post in the ask a girl recently about women marking average when they weren't and what constituted average. It's fair game for something like that to be here too, funny I'm not seeing those guys stand up and explain why they are calling themselves athletic when they clearly are out of shape. It doesn't really matter if their gut is from beer but when it sticks out disproportionate to the rest of their body, do they think it doesn't count is what I'm trying to figure out by reading here. | |

My thread isn't necessarily about "beer guts", but rather if they do have one, or are overweight, why list themself as "Athletic" I've seen some "Athletic" types who really are that, and they don't have any excess weight.

| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 6:47:02 PM | | I agree with the posts about the options being very vague. Im not a small person, 5ft 10 and 200 lbs. and i would never put "athletic" or "average", but i dont think that i am huge lol, and i do believe there should be a few more options such as "fit" and the "big and tall" would be good. incase anyone was wondering i did indeed put "a few extra pounds" | |
|
| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 6:55:58 PM | I was going to put athletic. I may not look it, but I use to lift weights. I'm athletically capable I suppose. I figured meh, I'm fat, I don't care. I'm upfront about it. Women are...well, no different. I've met one who's profile said was average. Whatever, right? I actually don't mind a bit of plump. She had upper body shots and she looked fine...then I met her in person...she had the hugest butt. I like big, I really do...but that looked like two hippos humping. That was a Big and Tall if I ever saw one.
Lovely person, we didn't click...cest la vie.

I don't normally look at men's profiles unless it's because of something he stated on the forums. Therefore I am more likely to notice the women who state 'average' or 'athletic' when they are 'overweight' or women who state 'a few pounds extra' when they are 'obese'. IMO Overall men are more likely to lie about their height. Women are more likely to lie about their weight.

It all depends on your definition of athletic.
My definition is someone who plays a lot of sports, or is active and out doing a lot of stuff, and also has some form of muscle tone to show for it.
A lot of people's definitions differ.
Body type has lost all meaning.
The easiest thing is to post a body shot and let people make up their own minds.
Exactly. Or even better, get a web-cam, and when you talk and they want to see what you look like, show yourself (Not genitalia you perverts!).
Main thing is, to be able to show your body. If you aren't happy with it, why should anyone else be?

You said it...also has some form of muscle tone to show for it...this does not consist of being overweight. I agree with the "body types" not being very user friendly for some people on this site, however, overweight is still overweight and not athletic. If you can't be honest about your own body, what's next?

|
| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 9:12:57 PM | ^^^There are people who are overweight who show muscle tone.
Therefore, my definition differs from yours.
If you are talking about the people who are extreme fitness buffs without a single ounce of fat on their bodies, then you aren't talking about the same people I'm talking about.
Obviously your definition of athletic, is one of those body-builder, or fitness buffs.
Whereas my definition is referring to someone who takes care of their body to some extent, but doesn't go overboard, and focus most of their life on their body image.
See the difference? | |

| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 9:22:33 PM | What one person seeks physically in a mate does not mean that they themselves are that same body type. Some very heavy people are attracted to a thin person, some who work out want someone who has a bit of a belly.
Personally I'm attracted mostly to two types of woman. Thin and VERY muscular woman.
I myself am on the lean/average size. I am not threatened or put off by a woman who is either taller then me or someone who could break me in half. lol Does this mean I will ever look as buff as the type of woman I'm attracted too? Nope I don't have the frame for it, but so what.
Everyone is different with different tastes in others. Just go for the type you like and leave it at that. It's not a ego thing for me, big deal if a woman can lift more then me in the weight room. Thats sexy to me.
I have yet to find a woman though that is built like a brickhouse on here yet. Still looking.
|
| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 10:11:40 PM | I hear so many women claim this as very common. So I just did a quick search of guys profiles, trying to see for myself. I went through about 3 dozen and didn't find the same result. Now I concede this is a small sampling and I do not doubt that it does happen. However, I don't think it happens as often as is mentioned or us guys are led to believe. About 3/4's of the profiles listed average and every big guy I saw, said a few extra pounds. Almost every athletic profile had a guy that I would agree looked athletic( no beer gut).
A couple matched my body type or appeared thinner. (My profile says thin).
Now what is athletic? Is it Lance Armstrong or 300 pound linebacker or Arnold like?
Who knows? Maybe I will do a "Mythbuster" examination of like 200 profiles and try to derive some actual numbers of guys being dishonest.
|
| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 10:26:28 PM | I should probably change mine to a few extra pounds- considering the ideal bodyweight for my height is 175... at 210 I'm almost 40lbs overweight! You know, just in keeping with the expectations... According to the BMI I'm also grossly obese.

| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 10:29:27 PM | | Here's a question for you: Have you ever watched a strong-man competition? Would you say those guys have a few extra pounds? If you actually understand the way the human body naturally develops muscle, you'd discover that those guys in the strong-man competitions have a natural build on them. They are considered athletic. However, this is an argument, as you've pointed out, that causes me much grief. PoF probably shouldn't have these body type classifications. | |
|
| Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds Posted: 8/8/2007 10:37:16 PM | HEY, Who's to say bowling or fishing derbys aren't legit athletic competitions?
I am athletic. I ride my bike a lot, and play basketball/football on occasion, but I am way too fat to be considered athletic.
Actually, I do like an athletic cut suit coat? Hmmmm?
How about those guys that eat 50 hotdogs in 10 minutes? That is a good healthy athletic competition...........right?
