| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/9/2007 1:17:39 PM | Yeah lostsa memories of 20+ years of seeing JG and the Dead. Remember hearing the news that sad day 12 years ago and later that night just watching the stars twinkle and shine , a lone praying mantis sitting on the hood and all I could do is say thank you Jerry.
" Life may be sweeter for this , I don't know... Feels like it might be alright... "

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/9/2007 3:23:14 PM | Is it the same as the Ice Cream???If so , Think he's cool | |

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/9/2007 5:39:23 PM | Yep Cherry Garcia, Wavy Gravy...There are others of everything including Beenie Babies I think there's even incense named after The Dead and Jerry hell of a man.. | |
|
| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/10/2007 3:51:59 PM | It still feels strange not to have Jerry Garcia around...
His music means a lot to me...So many memories, and so many things that would be memories if I only could remember them!
I miss hearing him playing guitar on "Lost Sailor".
I miss hearing him singing "Stella Blue".
I miss those endless versions of "Fire On The Mountain".
Good thing the music was recorded; preserved forever.

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/11/2007 8:10:11 AM | man.....I sooo remember that day.....I was in Vermont, running a State Park. Caught the boys at Highgate and in Albany that year.
Then we got this massive flood and it washed out the road to the park, so we were closed.....good thing, I needed some days to just reflect.
Anyway, the music infuence is alive and well...the Gathering of the Vibes is this weekend....and the Bears Picnic was a few weeks ago.
and New Riders of the Purple Sage are tonight at Penns Peak

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/11/2007 5:33:08 PM | i had just returned from a weekend in the berkshires. my brother called as i walked in the door.
'he's gone' was all he said. i knew instantly who he meant.
and i recalled in alarming clarity hearing him sing those words in d.c. i think that was the last time i saw them.
fare thee well. | |

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/12/2007 3:58:05 PM | | Dark Star did a great tribute to Jerry Garcia at Gathering of the Vibes this weekend. Sadly, I didn't get into the dead until after Jerry passed away but there is still great music to be heard!!! Bob Weir and Ratdog also had an amazing performance.. Rocked me right down to my bones! | |

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/12/2007 9:42:47 PM | One of my favorite memories I used to detail cars for a living one of my many jobs I had worked on this "87" Candy Apple Red Lincolyn low rider, all day hand waxed like 13 coats of wax on it I was cruising back into town to drop it off it was like riding a water bed the car was so smooth Friday afternoon real hot I got stuck in traffic some kid had this rap crap going full blast there was something wrong with the traffic siginal it looked as if we had a long wait people started yelling, honking horns, they were getting down right pissed off and it was being narrated by this, shoot em up getto rap that this white kid was playing in his mamma's buick..I closed the windows and turned up the music "Uncle John's Band.." Perfect this car had like 42 speakers in it and when I opened all the windows and cranked Jerry blowing away the violent stuff with peaceful loving vibes...Everyone stopped screaming, yelling, threatening, honking, the other drivers I observed had smiles on their mugs as if they were somewhere else not there, and when the song was over the light changed as if some force knew we needed Jerry to calm our nerves..God Bless You Jerry..I wish I had started listening earlier but I guess things happen the way that they do for a reason. I didn't even listen when I was told I looked like you it's probley the only reason I ever got laid..And of course I don't anymore..But that's too much information... | |

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/12/2007 9:46:28 PM | I remember listening to anthem a lot under this big weeping willow right down by the lake on warm summer nights. A longtime best friend of mine was the local live music hunter, an avid deadhead fan who had been to dozens of concerts following them, and I was the wheels. We had a lot of fun together, exploring the city's local music scene, whenever he wasn't at a dead concert.
Then Garcia died and his lust for music seemed to go with it. But I did see his younger brother at a bluegrass concert at the state fair last year. Looking forward to this year! It is just around the corner now......

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/12/2007 10:23:03 PM | | As I stated in my previous post " Thanks Jerry" it was always about the music and community...the spirit still lives on... just got back from Ratdog tonite t'was part of a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Kerouac's " On the Road " which was a great influence of the scene that Jerry and the boys helped to create. So glad that we haven't lost that... Peace | |

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 7/7/2008 11:06:03 AM | Jerry was a genius when it came to the guitar. And his voice, as plain as it was, could sound almost angelic. Be sure to check out the "Pure Jerry" concert CD releases. They are quite nice. Borders carries them "exclusively" (at least a few of them).
One memory I'll always treasure is seeing Jerry Garcia live and acoustic (with John Khan) with Robert Hunter as the opening act. This was at the Bushnell in Hartford CT, and I'm not sure when...maybe '86?? One of my favorite shows I've ever been to.

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 7/7/2008 2:23:14 PM | | Even though this was posted almost one year ago and here it is resurfacing almost to the day of his death again this year... I was only 13 or 14 when he died and never got a chance to see him live...but I like to think, when I've gone and seen The Other Ones, The Dead, Ratdog and Phil and Friends that they somehow manage to capture that spirit of Jerry in their music. Also, I'm going to see DSO in September for the 1st time and I hear they capture that magic as well...I don't think his spirit ever really died when he did...so many memories of people who have been there, stories passed on from head to head keep the spirit alive and well within all of us....Anyone in the Dallas area should check out Forgotten Space, great cover band or stream shows every Friday at knon.org. Peace | |

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 7/7/2008 5:52:52 PM | flwrchld Dark Star Orchestra is definately a good time, not the same, but fun anyway. Okay best memory - taking my friend Chris who was a total inner city kid to his first show. When we got there and he saw the parking lot scene he was hysterical.. i dont think in his wildest dreams he ever thought he'd see men walking around wearing skirts and offering to share their hookahs. By the time we got into the show he was so blown away by the beautiful people and vibe that he just seemed to glow. We had a great show, and when they played bid you goodnight I looked over and saw he was getting teary eyed. Definately best show of my life. | |

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 7/12/2008 8:04:05 PM | what can i say, i miss you Jerry. i was in the UK on that day, the hardest day of my life i think, i saw 72 dead shows, and just saw my 73rd phil and friends show the other night in charlottesville va. what i liked so much about jerry was his music, what it meant, "just let me sing your blues away", or the best lyrics "if you get confused, just listen to the music play", isnt that the truth and i have lived by this for 25 years.
"Sing one of the old songs, you do so well You lift my spirits, my tolling bell And if you fell like singing, sing away I'm gonna harmonize every word you say"
but what i liked the most, he couldnt sing all that grate, which makes it ok for me to sing out load when i hear the music, it makes it all ok.. as bobby sang with tears in his eyes that night not so long ago "popa's gone, were on our own, thanks for this thread and hope many more read this, cheers

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 7/22/2008 4:45:22 AM | I grew up in Palo Alto where the Warlocks , who later became the Dead started. Have been a fan since before the beginning. Garcia was an incredible talent, from Bluegrass where he started out as a Banjo player ( Old and in the way) to Rock,Jazz, folk and country.
He was wonderful at doing benefit concerts whenever there was a need.
Granted he was a troubled soul with plenty of demons , some justifiable some self inflicted, but he is still my alltime favorite. I even built a replica of Tiger as a tribute.
There is a new retrospective CD of his work , worth checking out.

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 7/22/2008 11:21:38 PM | Followed the Dead for years & have many memories of the music, the people, and all of the shows. When I lived in NC...the Dead came to Chapel Hill. So many ppl showed up it overwhelmed the local police dept & they banned them from coming back. Seriously thought Chapel Hill was more progressive than that...but go figure. Was totally a dark day to loose Jerry. It still seems unreal. No one will ever be able to replace him Ripple was alway my favorite & used to sing my kids to sleep with it. Even now my kids love the Dead. Gotta keep the tradition going! Thanks, for the thread!

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/8/2008 10:27:32 PM | To my friends... take a moment and reflect what this man has done to change your life. For me he opened me up to a world that did not sit in the confines of everyday society. His words and voice brought me home when i was lost and helped me to feel surrounded by love when I felt completely abandoned by everyone else in the world.
Jerome John Garcia August 1, 1942-August 9,1995
Fare you well, my honey Fare you well, my only true one All the birds that were singing Have flown except you alone Going to leave this broke-down palace On my hands and my knees I will roll, roll, roll Make myself a bed by the waterside In my time - in my time - I will roll, roll, roll
In a bed, in a bed by the waterside I will lay my head Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul
River gonna take me Sing me sweet and sleepy Sing me sweet and sleepy all the way back home It's a far-gone lullaby sung many years ago Mama, Mama, many worlds I've come since I first left home
Going home, going home by the waterside I will rest my bones Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul
Going to plant a weeping willow On the bank's green edge, it will grow, grow, grow Sing a lullaby beside the water Lovers come and go - the river roll, roll, roll
Fare you well, fare you well I love you more than words can tell Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/19/2008 4:20:49 PM | Had an oppurtunity last year, Sept 2, 2007 to go to San Francisco for the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love concert put on at Golden Gate Park. Over 100,000 people were in attendance. The show is out on a 2 DVD-set as of this writing, and if the sales are good, they will release a 4 DVD-set.
I can tell you without question Garcia was on the mind of MANY in attendance! I saw so many Dead flags waving throughout that crowd and no matter who the acts were, Canned Heat (what's left of them), the full Moby Grape Reunion (minus Skip Spence) for the first time in over 30 years, Country Joe McDonald, the original cast of HAIR, members of Jefferson Airplane/Starship etc, no matter who was playing, it was a celebration in Garcia's name like I'd never seen before! (With all the weed smoke in the air, it smelled like one, too! ) Of course, the event did not center on Garcia alone, but he sure was 95% of it in spirit!
A look back, outside the Dead, Garcia's solo work, his work with the Jerry Garcia Band and some of his recorded duets with Country Joe McDonald are criminally overlooked.
Everyone certainly has an opinion on Garcia, both good & bad, but there is no denying the mans' playing & his incredible writing with Robert Hunter. The man IS an icon, but the Rock Hall of Fame doesn't seem to think so, since the Dead are still not inducted to this day nor is Garcia inducted as a solo act! Amazing!
|
| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/21/2008 7:11:55 PM | hey now, i miss jerry very much, as i stated earlier. As far as the rock n roll hall of fame, the dead were inducted, January 19, 1994: The Grateful Dead are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the ninth annual induction dinner.
They had a card board cutout of Jerry. when i went to the hall of fame a couple years back, i looked for anything dead or jerry related and there are only 2 photos there and one concert poster. its very sad. sorry, but had to make the correction. cheers from NC,

| Jerry Garcia.... Posted: 8/22/2008 2:57:41 AM | Thanks for that info on the Rock Hall, I stand corrected on that one. I recall that they were nominated that year, but did not recall they actually made it in. I can tell you when I went in 2000 & 2002 to the musuem in Cleveland, they had an array of six of his guitars, including his main one as part of a rotating exhibit. They were in a standing glass case downstairs on the main floor right near John Cipollina's guitar/amps just before you enter the first floor exhibit room. Great to see that stuff!
The interesting thing is that right behind Garcia's guitar collection was another glass case with seven of Michael Anthonys' (Van Halen) basses including his "Jack Daniels" bass from the "Panama" video!
