guys that listen to heavy metal: are they dateable?

I"ve been wondering this for sometime and I'd like some female opinions on this but males are welcomed to respond too. I like a lot of music and as recently as the late 90's, I started listening to more hard rock/heavy metal music. However, I've come to learn that most girls nowadays usually like to stick to such genres as hip hop, indie rock, modern day pop music, and club music. My question is, do you girls think that a guy who listens to heavy metal is datable, as long as he listens to and gives other music a chance too? After all, I started out by listening to The Beatles and I've worked my way up ever since and yet, any girl that I've talked to as of late, isn't much into metal and rock music, and when I tell them its what I listen to, they tend to fade off pretty quickly. In fact, one night when I was at one of the college bars, one girl told me that she won't date any guy who listens to rock or metal but would only date guys that liked N Sync and Britney Spears. I found it to be disrespectful on her part and its been on my mind ever since, which prompted this question. Anyway, any type of response would be great and before you guys ask, I did a search on heavy metal in the forums and didn't see anything relating to this.

As what you regard as heavy metal?

Even us olden goldies like to listen heavy metal every now and again.

Surely no one picks who they date just based on what music they listen.

Well, what I regard as heavy metal, could be 80's hair bands like Poison and Winger, thrash bands like Megadeth and Slayer, Death Metal bands such as Cannibal Corpse and Napalm Death, alternative metal acts like White Zombie and Ministry, those types of bands, you get the idea.

Oh I remember the good old days when I bought my first AC/DC lp. And listened that in full volume.

I'm sure a lot of girls listen heavy metal too, it's just not guys and it never was.

I like all kinds of music... so I really don't care what the guy that I'm dating is into. I like metal, particularly hair metal but I've gotten into some harder stuff.

I think it would be stupid to limit who you hang out with because you differ on musical interests...

Guys who listen SOLELY to heavy metal would be a challenge, and not in a good way. Having some variety in the music you listen to is preferable. And I would say the same thing about Country music or any other type specifically marketed to one segment of the population.

I don't personally get the attraction of hip hop and rap. It just isn't music I personally like to listen to. A lot of women seem to like it, I believe, because I've noticed a lot of women like dancing, which is the primary point of that music. Me, I don't like dancing, don't like listening to dance music. It doesn't mean I won't dance on a date, but it's far from being my first choice.

They did a study at one point and found that many people of higher intelligence tend to listen to heavy metal, both for its complex instrumental arrangements and for the fact that it sits outside the mainstream, which is where really intelligent peoples' thoughts tend to sit as well.

Me, I like most everything but hip hop and rap. Then again, most of the stuff I personally listen to is obscure even for metalheads; I tend to enjoy Scandinavian symphonic metal, bands like Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, Epica, Rhapsody of Fire, etc. Gloriously epic arrangements of choirs, orchestras and metal, and usually with a classically-trained female vocalist.

Oh dear, silentman73. You forgot the Stratovarius out from the list.

Yes, heavymetal and classically trained female voice goes very well together.

I think most of the people don't just listen one type of music, that would be very boring.

in my experience of hanging out with some metalheads, i think they are some of the sweetest most caring guys you could ever be with, but hey there are probably some**** out there just like with every other title you put for asking about, for instance there are plenty of fish in the sea, but not all of them are nice fish, some of them are jerks!

Its good to know that there are indeed metalheads out there who can be very sweet and caring. I should know because most girls have told me that I"m a very sweet guy and that I deserve to be with someone. Everytime they've said that to me, its always made me feel really good.

It doesn't seem germane to the locale I'm residing at. Most women I know don't even seem to care, except as a way of looking at you funny when you exclaim that listening to Korn or Marylin Manson doesn't make you automatic metalhead.

I've had women shun me for my musical selections so much that I've almost become numb to it. I've even gotten the tired and trite "devil worshiper" label as an excuse to dismiss me out of hand or as a sick joke, despite the fact for a couple of periods in my life I was practically an Atheist.

Chalk up another reason I care little for being stereotyped. I know that drill all too well.

The thing about rock music in general is that it is, in fact, one of the most complex forms of music around. Metal is an even more complex sub-genre. It's also one of the most difficult to adapt to as a vocalist. People who listen to metal tend to have an appreciation for hard work, which leads them to have appreciation for anything from good food to a good woman. Hence, the

Then there's the people who just take the lyrics for face value, and only think of the typical "Sex, drugs, and Rock and Roll".

Here's the question- Who's the bigger jerk? The guy who does it for the love of music and has a smaller fan base, but probably squiks the people who don't listen to him with a dismissive "whatever". or the guy who writes to the trend and only does it for the money, pandering to anyone and everyone he meets?

It's a matter of perspective, but the former is probably going to have more actual friends than the latter's money-grubbing entourage.

What I find interesting is that usually, I gravitate towards the former camp almost invariably. I value artists complying with their own musical integrity and vision far more worthwhile than those with populist leanings. Remember, there's a difference between being popular and visible without losing a core essence, and being trend whores and justifying mediocrity.

I'd much rather date a guy who knows what he likes and why he likes it, than a guy who's all "yeah, whatever, I like what's on the radio..."
Music is a huge part of my life, and I don't need a guy who likes all the same stuff. I'm comfortable and confident enough in my own interests to know what I like, and I don't shy away from telling people what that is. Taste is subjective. As long as whatever he listens to isn't one genre, all the time, it's cool. What I do appreciate is somebody with an open mind, and who might want to introduce me to stuff I haven't heard. And somebody who doesn't make a face when he sees me listening to Christine Aguilera while wearing my Corrosion of Conformity hoody.
Having been a fan of metal for...jeez, a while... I can say with confidence that every guy I've met who likes this sort of music - be it at concerts, on message boards, or through the band - has turned out to be a total sweetheart. I certainly wasn't attracted to all of them, but each was really sweet and thoughtful and friendly. Maybe I've just been fortunate. This isn't to say that guys who listen to country, or pop, or jazz, aren't like this... but that's not what this thread was about.

Yeah your dateable and I always have
been since I have been a big fan of Metal all my adult life.
Lots of us here.
I don't know- so many variables in dating - will she
like me for my music-will she like me if I only wear
Pro Keds - will she like me if I shave-
Just talk to women. Just meet them.
The only excuse a woman has for not dating you is
because she does not feel it with you. All this other stuff
can be worked out.

AC/DC and you shook me all night long remains to be the best song in the universe! Next to this is Shaggy's Angel, and along the same lines is the not to be forgotten Working Class Man by Jimmy Barnes. Just three of my favorite songs.

So answer to your question, yeah, you are datable.

Yes - very. Some of the men who listen to heavy metal are tall, thin and (hopefully) have long hair...and that's totally my type, so it comes with the territory - and of course some of it's just great music. Of course not all listen to just that, and I prefer someone who likes to listen to a lot of things, but a majority of them do have it in their library.

So long as he doesn't try to force it down my throat, I won't try to force my country music habits down his.

.....I remember the day's when AC/DC (akka Dakka) played at a place called 'North cott Surf Club'. Of course they were unknowns then, however still wore those sexy school shorts. It's a long way to the shop if ya wanna sausage roll........

most girls nowadays
.....There you go OP, there is your answer Girl's
I don't mind a bit of head banging stuff, geez I was playing Deep Purple on the way to work the other dayon the trusty old car CD player.
My taste in music varies greatly. I appreciate songs/music that will still be around in 20 years. This hip hop, rap crap stuff is a temporary thing, and hopefully it will fade out. Would I date a guy who's into it? Sure, so long as he keeps the stuff away from my ears, unless it's at least 20 years old, I don't want to hear it.

Personally, music is only what you listen to, it's not who you are. I only wear black, I hang out with "freaks," I paint my nails black and I wear dark make-up; My favourite band is the Backstreet Boys.

Well, truth be told, its like I said, I am a huge fan of heavy metal/hard rock music but I"m not opposed to dating a girl who doesn't like it. In fact, if her favorite band was The Dave Matthews Band, it would just get me to like them a lot more and even go to one of their shows with her. That doesn't mean that I"m gonna stop listening to what I like. I mean, there are metal girls out there but I hardly see any in my hometown and when I do, they're already spoken for. But I"m pleased at the responses this has been getting so far. Keep em coming.

I personally love heavy metal, as well as other types of genres. I would defanetly date some one who listens to heavy metal. I have in the past., and will again! Any one who has anything bad to say about you or the types of music you listen to are not worth datting. Anyone worth their salt will respect and maybe even share in your pleasure of heavy metal music. (he he he...)

Well seeing as metal is my favourite genre of music, of course I"ll date a guy that listens to it.

Obviously though it's not the only factor in dating someone, but it gives them bonus points hah
