| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/14/2007 6:11:59 PM | I don't know what your shows in Canada, the UK, or elsewhere are like, but I wholeheartedly state that the state of TV shows in the USA TOTALLY SUCKS. Thank goodness for the DVD sets of old shows that are coming out in drips and drabs, not enough and certainly not soon enough. Reality shows at the end of the 90s was the tip of the iceberg. Now they glut TV, they're so damn cheap to produce nobody really bothers to produce any quality dramas, comedies, or my old favorite, cop shows. CSI shows certainly seem popular, but if you ask me they invoke the worst elements of detective/law enforcement, action, and dramatic shows. I suppose with 100+ channels available on cable or satellite, we all ought to get used to network TV sucking forever and ever, as there are so many alternatives
Of course you all might have your personal favorites on today. I could certainly live well without CSI, but some of you like it I guess. The Simpsons keep going. I think the best of the current TV shows that mostly resembles pre-late 90s TV is Desperate Housewives.
Hell I like a few of the reality shows, but there are WAY too many of them. I like Survivor, it's one of the originals. Hell's Kitchen just ended, Gordon Ramsey is hilarious as the foul-mouthed culinary artist. Mythbusters is pretty damn entertaining. I enjoyed watching the Survivorman series. I can tolerate The Amazing Race, it's a cheap way for me to visit the world. American Idol is VERY marginal entertainment. Other than that, no way. Big Brother blows. Fear Factor totally disgusts me. Etc.
Rant away. Tell me I'm nuts and you love today's TV. If you're a fan of classic programming, tell us about it; remembering nostalgia is always a great thing to do.

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/14/2007 6:54:29 PM | | I agree, OP. That's why I don't own a television. The quality has gone down big time. When there were only a few channels it was so much better. I loved the Japanese Godzilla movies and black-and-white Abbott/Costello and Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis movies. There are too many channels and options now. I am also careful about the movies I see as the modern mentality has affected them, too. I prefer music or the radio/radio talk shows. The only thing I really like is the Twilight Zone New Year's Day marathon. Those old black-and-white episodes were the greatest. | |

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/14/2007 7:15:20 PM | I agree- I rarely watch television other than PBS- Discovery channel Interesting thought provoking Tv. Thats really hard to find today. Thats pretty much it. I cannot stomach reality Tv. I would much rather read, crochet or knit. Yes - my secret gulity pleasures are The Simpsons and Family Guy - Cartoon network and Nickelodeon. curlygrl~ | |

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/14/2007 7:22:02 PM | Nothing too interesting going on. I loved the Office(Not the American version, but the original British one), I did enjoy Columbus, Sex and the city.
What I watch today but not religiously every day are shows like Mythbusters(I love Jamie Hyneman ), good documentaries and some movies.
But I have to admit that for some weird reason I have got hooked up watching The Hills in MTV channel. And I'm waaaayyyy too old for that It seems to be strangely intrigueing

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/14/2007 9:39:47 PM | I too was a big TV fan. Now its almost all old shows I watch even in "Prime Time".
CSI really jumped the shark years ago. It's nothing but stupid Pseudo Science Fiction/Fantasy now.
It lost all believability for me in the episode where they took an ordinary pocket digital camera photo of a couple on vaction and then "blew- up" the picture to reveal the killer in the reflection off the woman's cornea.
YEA RIGHT!!!! Ever blow up a digital picture??? All you get is bigger pixels. No computer program in the world is going to make THAT much difference.
CSI people ALWAYS solve the case in less than 8 hours. In most cities you couldn't get across town in that time.
Nobody ever wears gloves, mask or protective suits and everybody walks through blood stained evidence to suddenly find A SINGLE HAIR from the murderer!. Yea right, try finding just a single hair of any kind among the dust bunnies in my house!! I thought that sort of stupid CSI work went out with OJ's bungled case!
I prefer MythBusters. Guys who really do try to solve mysteries - and bungle their way around doing it. Silly CSI episodes are their favourite targets!
"DaVinci's Inquest" and the grand-daddy of all CSI shows "Wojeck" 1966-1968 with John Vernon as a fictionalized version of real life Toronto coroner Dr Morton Schulman were superb and are still well worth watching over and over again.

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/14/2007 10:35:50 PM | house would be good but since I worked in medical a long time... it is too unbelievable what that house doctor does and gets away with ( no way is a doctor going to get away with that NON CONSERVATIVE stuff he does ... in a hospital) so I lost interest.
csi......... not as good as other crime shows based in reality.. as they say TRUTH is stranger than fiction
I am liking that show BONES but it only comes on once a week ! wife swap is funny and I like that sometimes...
I need some good TV | |

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 12:07:13 AM | UGH I agree. I was bored tonight after I got all my reading done for school tomorrow and decided to watch tv. I have like 100 channels and there was NOTHING worth watching on.
I love ER, Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives and can't wait for the new season to start. I'm not a huge fan of reality TV. I really miss Friends and The O.C.

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 12:52:48 AM | | Yeah, I'll agree that TV shows are definitely not what they used to be. I remember back in the day, you could look forward to NBC's Must See Thursday which featured the original lineup of The Cosby Show, Family Ties, Cheers, and Night Court, or ABC's TGIF, which featured such shows as Full House, Family Matters, Mr.Belvedere, Step By Step and other great shows from that period. Heck, even MTV was so good back in the day so you could watch such cool shows like Beavis and Butthead, 120 Minutes, Alternative Nation, Singled Out, Headbangers Ball, YO! MTV Raps, or just music videos that played around the clock before the reality boom of today began rearing its ugly head. And while most of todays TV shows definitely do indeed suck, there are a few out there that I do really like watching. Lately, I've been watching such shows as The Shield, House, Heroes, and I just recently started to watch The Pick Up Artist for tips on becoming the best ladies man possible. But thats another thread for another time. | |

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 1:54:33 AM | I miss Fantasy Island & Love Boat....you seriously gotta get cable..or go rent some series from blockbuster...Deadwood...Sopranos...Big Love...The Tudors...John from Cincinnati...discovery & history channel...
This is off topic...but since she went on about her new, rich doctor husband...I suppose it's ok...did she just seriously say... ...actually legally married so I should stop coming here....!?!? ....I'm so never getting married again if it means I'll be so controlled, I'm not allowed to have male friends or get on forums...don't know if I should congratulate you or send ya some bolt cutters for that leash around your neck...good luck...we'll miss seeing your post...you have some pretty good 1's sometimes...

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 2:37:52 AM | The History Channel and Discovery are my favorites but they are beginning to turn just about anything into a TV show. " Ice Road Truckers ", Who decided that making a show about truck drivers in the arctic would be worth watching? " Watch out ! his fuel line froze up and he's losing money now ! " " Worlds Deadliest Catch ", a show about crab fishermen. Put the basket in the water, take the basket out of the water, that's how you catch crabs. " Myth Busters ", unfortunately it's gotten to be like the NBA, all you need to watch is the last 10 minutes. " South Park " overtook " The Simpson's " as the funniest most imaginative show on TV a long time ago. " The Daily Show " was better when Craig Kilborn hosted it but it's still funny now. " The Colbert Report " is still daily must viewing. | |

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 3:57:48 AM | | I pretty much only watch current events type shows, there are a few well-made dramas I could probably get into, but I never end up watching them... books, music and movies can target 'niche' markets but there isn't as much of that on TV unless you go for the high-end expensive cable packages. | |
|
| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 5:35:22 AM | you obviously havent seen Charmed they saved the world for you so did Charlies Angels not once but twice | |
|
| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 7:16:01 AM | WOW am I out of the loop or what???? I didn't even reconize half of the titles people put up.
Of course the fact that I went without a TV for 2 1/2 years and now have a TV but only the free channels may be the cause for this....LOL
If you don't like what is on TV why do you keep paying to support it? There are so many better things to do than to watch TV.

If you don't like what is on TV why do you keep paying to support it? There are so many better things to do than to watch TV. There are LOTS of great programs on niche cable/satellite channels. I love Discovery Channel and the History Channel. That's why you pay for TV, that kind of stuff, let alone get lots of sports programming. And sure there are lots of better things to do than watch TV, but we can't do all those things all the time; some of us enjoy watching TV, especially programs that resemble classic TV programs.
Before I posted this thread I found this other thread in the Ontario forums: http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts5504267.aspx There were lots of great posts in this thread.
I like classic cop shows; not all of them, but stuff like T.J. Hooker, Hunter and S.W.A.T. The A-Team was one of my favorites, Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider; comedies like The Brady Bunch, Welcome Back Kotter, All In The Family, WKRP in Cincinnati; detective shows like Columbo, Quincy; quirky shows like Moonlighting, dramas like Dallas and Dynasty. One of my favorite shows was Sledge Hammer!. I'm sure I can remember some others.
The chance of a real action-based drama being put on TV today are practically nil due to the hundreds of channels available now--all the ratings get watered down so much due to their being 100+options instead of 4, the networks won't invest in more expensive programming, they resort to cheaply produced reality shows to fill time. Hell I've seen infomercials running for hours on local network affiliates during the weekend. It's a damn shame they don't choose to run classic TV repeats during this time; that would just remind people how their current programming just totally sucks.

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 12:05:16 PM | ^^^Yes with movies the budgeting structure remains much the way it was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. That allows the studios to continue to invest the proper amount into casting and production.
Speaking of films, in the past very often a TV star graduated up to the movies, so to speak. That simply would be next to impossible to happen today, as there are so few shows where a young-un can get a decent break.

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 12:22:08 PM | Adam-12, Emeregency, Leave it to my beaver, I'm an old school fart, watched too many of those Marcus Welby M.D. Shows though ended up a total hypocrandic.. | |

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 12:49:41 PM | Seems like this thread should be in the Over 45 Forum. Bunch of old people reminiscing about the good old days of tv. Today's TV shows do not suck. Yes, some of the old ones were good, but there were a lot of bad shows back then, too, I'm sure. (Not that I can name any that were bad, because one tends to not remember that sort of stuff) I like Big Brother. I really enjoy it when they start to intentionally kick the virtual crap out of each other. Very entertaining. Amazing Race also good for also the same reason, except the crap-kicking is more actual than virtual. So you think you can Dance is very good - final dance on tonight, by the way. Heroes, one of my favs from last year. Medium, very good. The Daily Show, funny and thought-provoking. I wish Studio 60 hadn't been canceled, another one of my favs. House - oh, those blue, blue eyes. My Name is Earl, funny stuff. Corner Gas - absolutely hilarious, and I think it's available in the States now. (You should watch it. I personally know all of the characters on that show) I'm a sci-fi fan and love, love, loved Stargate SG-1, which finished its 10th and final season this spring. However, Stargate Atlantis is still going strong. And then just about anything on the Discovery Channel and the History Channel is worth watching. I like TV. | |
|
| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 1:06:04 PM | I like Sci Fi, such as Stargate Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica.
As for non sci fi I like Boston Legal--it's hilarious!
The rest of the stuff on TV SUCKS, especially the reality shows, American Idol and that Gray's Anatomy which is gross. Too much of that people jumping into each other's beds. It's pointless! I also hate Two and a Half Men. My friend suggested I try it and I thought it was stupid.
Law & Order is a pretty good show, but since Lenny died it hasn't been quite the same to me. I think it's outlived its usefulness as an interesting program.
PBS has some good stuff too.
I miss the '80s family oriented sitcoms like the Cosby Show, 227, Diff'rent Strokes, Facts of Life, Growing Pains, Hogan's Family, and the like.
Off to the DVD store it is for me!!

| today's TV shows totally SUCK Posted: 8/15/2007 2:50:04 PM | I dunnot about ALL TV. I myself loved the first season of "Heroes." In the past, I was hooked on the TV shows "Highlander," "Forever Knight," "Kindred: The Embraced" and "Witchblade." Pity those shows went off the air.
I also love reruns of British comedies: "The Young Ones," "Red Dwarf," "Are You Being Served," etc.
