Someone's e-mail spamming

I hide my profile... the email spam to my associated Yahoo account stops.

I unhide... it starts back up

Someone has some way that they are getting my e-mail off your system...

These are "get laid now" spams...

Is your POF Profile User Name identical to the one you use for Yahoo?

I tend to do that

But... they had to assume I did that.... or have some method of getting in and pulling it from the records.

Spammers tend to generate lists and then just throw it out there. Which is why most ISPs block outgoing mail from those who have had a certain amount of "failed attempts" at sending mail to accounts that don't exist.

Correct !!! Done on the Basis of Assumption.

There is no access for anyone to any Records except for the Admin.

Its common Spammer Practice to build up a Mass-Mailing List by lurking various Sites and Forums and take "Shots into the Dark" by appending MSN, GMAIL, YAHOO, HOTMAIL, etc. to your User Name.

Those E-Mails that return a "Received" Stub get added to the Spammer's Database.
Its just another Method of harvesting E-Mail Addresses, and has nothing to do with compromising your Account, this Site, etc.

Don't use the same Plentyoffish E-Mail Name that you already use with your
Online or ISP Name.

You should change your User Name to prevent this from happening again.

Have a look here: How do Spammers harvest E-Mail Addresses

Item #11 ... Excerpt:
Guessing could be done based on the fact that email addresses are based on people's names, usually in commonly used ways (first.last@domain or an initial of one name followed / preceded by the other @domain)

Further, the Admin has changed the Sign-up Process so that a requested POF User Name can not be contained in the submitted "Online" or "ISP" E-Mail Address.

So if your Online Addy is Bill_Jones@hotmail.com you cannot have the POF User Name of "Bill_Jones"

That will knock off a lot of this "Spam".

Hey guy love your site. It is doing wonders for my love life. BUT...Somedatingsite.com is ruining my experience. They lace user profiles with viruses that just kill my computer. I am not computer litereate enough to combate this. I can spot a spam sit by picture and now message. It is like dodgeing mine feilds ...can you help. Somedatingsite.com seems to be one of the biggest offenders . If a profile askes you to contact them at a gmail address it is usually a spammer. A virus or popup is soon to follow and interrupt . PoF now needs a Game Warden...You rule dude!

mailwasher.com has a free washer that lets you bounce mail back to the send as unread - no such address.

The paid for version lets you wash multiple e-mail addresses.

My spam is so bad I run mouse and key recorder all night just hitting that mailwasher process button every 14 minutes.

Ironically, the most spam now comes through the e-mail address I used to communicate with my first POF contact. Message me if you want more information.

consider
- gettting a new email address and notify your friends of your new address
- warn friends to keep you off cc lists

common sense practice is to use a disposable web mail addy to cummunucate with new people and to guard your more personal address.

Yes, and the Spammers were the first to know about that, and that is why you continue to get the same 'spoofed' Spam. Just because your E-Mail Spam Filter tells them no such Address doesn't mean they take you off their Mailing List.
