The more I study, work with and learn about my cards, the more I am amazed by them. The religious symbolism, and multiple associations with more than one major religious tradition that are inherent to the cards draws me in... helps me learn about myself and expand my own understanding of spirituality and the Divine.

I am! I have been reading cards for about 13 years... it has grown into a love for and collection of various oracles (Runes, I Ching, Sacred Geometry, Sabian symbols, Quan Yin Oracle, etc...)...

I love the layers of awareness that can be achieved by working with oracles... when first approached, the symbolism of the cards can be almost overwhelming, but you develop your own relationship with the images and interpretations so that they become a part of you and your own progression (like the Fool)....

The symbolism becomes imprinted in such a way that it affects your unconscious mind, hightens and hones your intuition and assists in your evolution seemingly unseen...

I have predicted some pretty big things for others that have even shocked me! I love to find patterns and to perpetually learn and comprehend ever more, with tarot cards/oracles I am never disappointed :)

Again Sassy I have entered a forum only to find yet another layer of you that has once again "tickled my Spirit". A student of the kabbalah as well as the tarot I have progressed from the basic Rider/Wait at the tiny young age of 13 through the Celtic tarot and have now landed safely at home with a pair of decks that seem to capture the very essense of every question asked of them Osho....... and ....... Haindl.Wow what a pair.
As for reference for study there are volumes out there. Use this opportunity to tune your intuition, blossom in your meditations, and allow your curiosity to be aroused to areas of Kaballah, Alchemy, Numerology, Myth and legend, and the personal journey every reader has had to take to peel the layers off the onion we all are. The deeper we can understand and accept our own journey through the choices we have and will make in this lifetime and others the better our services may be for our Querrent/s.
As for me ....... the deeper I delve ......... the less I know ......
Keep going it's a "fantastic voyage"

Hi I_MHuman :)

I like the Osho tarot too.... when I feel the need for fresh symbolism/interpretations, I find a new book but keep the olds cards that I have grown quite attached to...

One day I would like to design my own deck and write an accompanying book since I have some strong ideas on certain "traditional" interpretations.... but I still have much to learn and experience :)

Been studying tarot for 35 years. Now I teach it. Always learning more as I do.
And so many new decks! btw, Tarot is different than oracle cards. Tarot is a specific pattern, no matter what the attributes the card makers assign, they have to fit the Tarot pattern to be tarot. The Animal Cards, and ones like that are not Tarot, but more oracle. I like working with combinations of a few types of decks.

I still keep the Celtic deck around. It was one of the first outside the Rider/ Waite that I got. In keeping with Tradition though I have to admit the first deck that was ever gifted to me was the Haindl that I currently use. I have found the statement about your deck coming to you when you have become ready to be true. I had chosen the other decks and the art and symbolism just didn't move me like this deck.
I'm wondering though .......... I love the way that in the Haindl they have taken the Fool through the path of AlchemyXIV rather than Temperance. Stressing our need to find ways to be productive with each other rather than just tolerating each other through gritted teeth.
Then as the little soul continues his journey he shows up at XX with Eon offering a new birth instead of the condemnation of the biblically alligned Judgement. Only to be offered back again to a loving Universe XXI............
Does any one else have an opinon upon the differences between the modern decks and the more traditional? Has anyone noticed a difference between a deck that was gifted to you and a deck you went and got on your own?

I have read them for 35 years. I am amazed by how people say I am so accurate, thought I have no idea how. If I am so good, why can't I get any lottery numbers right?
I have about 7 decks and I often do double deck readings, representing present and future.
I enjoy the challenge but often don't read them for months at a time. I once did 20 readings in an evening at a fund raiser event, a couple of years back and it was so exhausting by the time the event ended. I was drained.
I find the cards fascinating, though I tell people not to take them as the be all end all when it comes to life and predicting life. Life should not revolve a deck of Tarot cards any more than a daily horoscope.

While I have many different tarot and oracle decks and sets, the one I use almost exclusively is Motherpeace tarot, a round deck. I like the subtle nuances I find revealed by the angle of the card, as opposed to the upside-down/right-side up interpretation of rectangular cards. I also like the imagery used with this deck.

I was never gifted with a deck/set, so have no basis for comparison.

However, I am on my second deck of Motherpeace, and have found that I am much more comfortable and in tune with my old worn distressed deck (duh!) than I am with the newer one. So now I use the new deck as a visual aid for those I read for, separating the major from the minor, the suits from one another, putting them in order beforehand, so that the person getting the reading can go right to that card and get a better view of it without disturbing my layout.

I also have a preprinted chart showing the layout of the cards with a thumbnail description of the meaning of each position. As I read, I pencil in the name of the appropriate card, with an arrow to show its orientation, and a few key words from my interpretation of that card at that position. Some people bring along their "records" when they come back for another reading, and after their current reading we can compare them to see the changes and discuss the possible hows/whys/etc. that did/could effect a desired change, as part of our session.

My readings tend to focus more on psychological/emotional factors going on in a person's life rather than the stereotypical "You're going to meet a tall, dark stranger and have three children with him while traveling the world" prophetic-type readings.

And I can't read for myself worth a damn. With others (except those very close to me) I immediately "know" what I'm supposed to say for nearly every card/position. For myself or close intimates, I tend to read into rather than just read, or I waver and second-guess ...not good for a reading. I do have an abbreviated "yes/no" mini-layout that works for everybody, even myself. Too bad most my "questions" are essay or multiple choice, instead of T/F, Y/N....

Love the Motherpeace deck. Am on my second deck now too. grin. I also use the arrow method of marking the layout. And the thumb placement on the bottom of the card so as to not loose it's positioning. Bet you do that too!
Can't do my own either. Now that's a piss off.

I enjoy Tarot decks. If I were locked up with only ONE esoteric thing to have it'd have to be a Tarot deck. I could stufy the symbolism and intricacies for years and never be at a loss.

For those who said they're into Qabala and Tarot, there's two books I highly recommend although they are both quite advanced:

"The Tarot" by Mouni Sadhu

"Tarot of the Bohemians" by Papus (a.k.a. Gerard Encauss)

You like mental gymnastics of exercising your brain and its creativity where involving not only the Tarot but Qabala, Alchemy, Esoeric Sciences and Natural Philosophy rule? These two books will give you much food for thought.

For reading, I use the standard Hanson-Roberts but also use the Crowley Thoth deck, the Morgan-Greer deck or the Hermetic Tarot deck.

I also have some other fortune telling decks for fun like the Gypsy Witch cards, Madam Endora Fortune Telling cards, the Answer Deck, Whack Pack Creativity Deck, a couple of NLP deck and some others.

I've read tarot for over 30 years. I have 3 decks. My favorite is the one I was just sent from a friend. I do not even know the name of the deck its handed down and handed down. When your time draws close you pass them on to someone you feel guided to give them to. They do have a different feel than my other cards. Always remember when you give a reading just don't read the cards anyone can do that let your intuition flow the reading will be much better for the person you are reading for. The better the reading the better it makes you feel also.

To the OP: I am glad that you have found a means to help you understand the Divine, and yourself. I've been reading Tarot (specifically, Dragon Tarot) for about 5 years, and I agree: they can be an excellent tool into self-discovery.

But, I caution you to remember that they are nothing more than that: a Tool. Tools are wonderful implements, and can make a difficult job much easier. But they can also do a lot of damage if not used properly, or used for the wrong task.

I guess what I'm saying is, "good on ya, glad you dig the Cards. But don't limit yourself to them, there's other stuff out there, too."

Trippy I'm totally feelin' ya bro........ When studying with an unmentioned order at a facility in Oceanside CA that was one of the things that was stressed .... The difference between tools and divine. This is one of the reasons I don't use the significators any more when using a Celtic Cross spread. I have found that by just aligning a court card with a sun sign I'm putting the querrent in a box and forgetting about the rest of their chart, numerology, totems, and Chineese astrological influences and not focusing so much on what their reading may be about anyway.
As for prediction readings I have always been taught that they are a taboo, an old gypsy trick .......... Yeh, and a my Hungarian Great Grandmother was one of the ones that had an influence with that ......... go figure. I have found that just giving the people I have done readings for an over view of the influences surrounding a certain question is of great value to them.
Although I am wondering if anyone can remember the seasonal time sink with the aces of each suit? I have been having a total "brain fart" on that one.

i have several decks. voyager, da vinci enigma, osho zen, thoth, and a set i never used but gave unopened to a friend last night because it was too involved for me to get into, after having skimmed through it's accompanying book. i also have an intuition deck and angel oracle cards. as well i have several books, one of which mentioned in msg 12: "Tarot of the Bohemians" by Papus (a.k.a. Gerard Encauss) which i indeed found far too advanced for me...

last night myself and two close friends got together for readings, which we have done on several prior occaisions. we always burn white candles for purity and safety as well as say blessings and prayers. i was the first of us 3 to choose for a reading, and picked the thoth deck, which has only been used maybe four or five times previously. they are fairly new and have always been kept in their original box.

when i took the cards from the box i noticed the edges looked darkened, discolored, something i had never seen before on them or any other cards. as i shuffled through the deck picking 15 cards... one specific card, the prince of cups was burned on it's lower right corner. only then did i realise something was different, i mean really different. upon closer inspection, the other cards except for two others, both magus cards where in their original pristine condition... all others had slightly burnt edges all around the circumference of the deck.

both of these friends have known me for many years and we were all more than surprised at what we were incredulous at seeing. one of my friends stood up and rummaged around for a regular deck of playing cards to which she took a lighter to, to see how long it would take to actually burn the edges, and how they might be burnt in such a fashion as to be entirely burnt around only the edges and so symetrically. we were shocked to see it took a rather long time to burn just a small bit onto a deck of regualar playing cards.

my other friend was completely spooked, but the other, like myself, was amazed and we began speculating as to what the significance of the changed appearance of these particular three cards meant. we took it as a sign, a message of some sort. i said another prayer for protection aloud and continued with the reading. which proved enlightening in positive ways. then my friends did theirs, with other decks and no unusual outcomes but with clarity as well. i have never experienced anything so unusual as this in the several years i've had an interest in tarot and have both received and given readings, i can say with all honesty that if i had experienced this with any others of the many i know that i would be accused of making this up because it is so extreme.

i have personally experienced other rather extreme cases of what i consider not "normal" but rather "paranormal" but this is something i have never heard of happening, much less experiencing, firsthand. we came to several possiblilities, but i pose the query here as to what others might think this means? i posted here on a thread already began rather than start a new one as it seemed appropriate to do so, and i hope this isn't off topic, as i am appealing to anyone that considers themselves to study or use tarot because i don't know of anyone personally to consult with rearding this rather strange occurance.

thanks in advance to anyone for their input, i admit i'm perplexed on this one.

Tarot, in both the readings I have given and the ones I have had done, are remarkable similar to "cold reading".

Premise is simple: there are many forms of communication besides verbal: and even within verbal, there are stil many other variations of communicating.

By listening carefully to what a questioner is asking me, and carefully observing their reactions and how they treat the deck, there is much one can learn. The tricky bit- for me- comes in the choice of what to tell them: do I tell them what they want to hear, or rather, what would actually help them? The do are seldom the same thing.

I used to use a deck for a few years in my early 20s. I even worked doing readings for a living for a couple of years. What really surprised me was when I let my intuition go with what I was feeling. One time, I looking at a Knight card, and there was what looked like a whip on it. Strangely, I felt drawn to the whip during the reading, and felt an overall call of Spain for some reason. I mentioned this to the customer, and he/she (I don't remember) said that they had been there recently for a holiday. Very strange.

Other things that I saw:

One reader told a woman that her son was sniffing glue. She denied it for about 30 minutes, and then told him it was worrying her like crazy and was the real reason she sought a reading. But she didn't want to put words into the fortune-teller's mouth.

Another time, my sister worked for a short time. She did a reading over the phone, and described the room that the customer was sitting in, in incredible detail. I found that I did this once too, though not nearly in such detail.

I once spoke to a woman who told me her partner had left, and was he coming back. I saw in the cards that a great calamity had befallen her house, and that was a far bigger issue than the ex. She argued with me for half-an-hour, and then told me a big storm had blown a tree straight through the roof and the middle of her house, leaving it in 2 pieces.

These stories were the tip of the iceberg.

i've been working with the cards for about a year and a half. one thing that i have come against is the swords/air and the wands/fire. i have friends who practice wicca and i have read and circled with them once or twice. in the wiccan faith the sword or anathame actually represents fire and the wand represents air. this switch doesn't fit well with readings i do for people using the the rider-waite deck, which is my prefered. has anyone else encountered this? besides that minor issue i took to the cards like a fish to water and absolutely -love- them.

_Mhuman in answer to time frames in the tarots,

Although I am wondering if anyone can remember the seasonal time sink with the aces of each suit? I have been having a total "brain fart" on that one.

Aces are the seasons and months and if you look at other cards you can see seasons and time frames in the moons ect on the cards..I hope this helps to guide you in time frames.

Ace of Swords are the Fall months September October and November they represent Seeking and finding answers. A time of knowledge and the determination thereof. This is a card of force and Strength with the power of force surrounding.

Ace Of Pentacles are the Winter months of December January and February. Magical out comes based on a firm foundation. Creativity, growth, bliss a time of to take action good health , togetherness. Treasures of the soul bountiful gifts.

Ace of Cups are the Spring months March April May, New beginnings, letting the future take care of itself. The time is now. Deep emotions, love and happiness and joy being in tune with your sexual being expressing the inner passion within.

Ace of Wands are the Summer months June July August. New starts the maleness of nature and surrounding events become infused with virility. Male enters Female , water elements Kundalini Creation

I hope this helps any that were seeking to understand time frames in the tarot.

I quite like Tarot myself...still haven't nailed the process down just yet, I still have to use my cheat sheets. It's more your interpretation of the cards.

I really quite like using the Runes. I have a set of what is called Healing Runes. You can do certain layouts if you are seeking advice from the Divine. I think the set is focused on Christianity and around the belief of God. But it amazes me when I do readings how accurate they are, and seem to give the answers I need to hear at appropriate times in my life.

Crystal balls are always used as a way to connect with the Divine or mirrors for scrying. But I've had no luck with this...though I've collected some nice paper holders in the form of crystal balls. I do believe in healing energies from the crystals so have quite the collection going.

Working with the Divine is empowering and I am too amazed at the responses I receive from cards or runes. If you like the cards OP try the Runes, you may like them as well.

Tarot decks are conflated playing cards. They were created for the purpose of playing games, which got turned into something more by con artists and just plain artists, so they can make money out of telling fortunes and creating intricate artwork on the cards themselves.

Tarot was created to be used in the exact same way we use its derivative (playing cards) today.

^^^spoken like a true non-believer.

But before I started to type my rebutle...I googled the history of Tarot...and copied from wikipedia....for those interested in the history of:

The tarot (also known as tarocchi, tarock or similar names) is typically a set of seventy-eight cards, comprising twenty-one trump cards, one Fool, and four suits of fourteen cards each—ten pip and four face cards (one more face card per suit than in ordinary playing cards). Tarot cards are used throughout much of Europe to play Tarot card games such as Italian Tarocchini and French Tarot.[1] In English-speaking countries, where the games are largely unknown, Tarot cards are utilized primarily for divinatory purposes[1][2], with the trump cards plus the Fool card comprising the twenty-two major arcana cards and the pip and four face cards the fifty-six minor arcana.

This site dates back as far as the Chinese using them in the 1300s. Interesting stuff.
