| secret meetings?[Thread Closed/Bumped] Posted: 8/20/2007 7:34:09 AM | From RightonCanada Do we want o keep going in this direction, or do we want to make a bold move back to local economies? As long as we wander like sheep to these types of business practices, we will continue in this direction, and we know where it has led us so far. I believe that we as the people of all nations, can decide our collective fate, through action. Do not put your money into industries that do harm, socially, economically, or environmentally. If we at least do the best we can to speak up, speak out and not contribute to the problem, it can disappear. We do have the power. We just need to use it.
George Bush, Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderon will be meeting behind closed doors in Montebello, Quebec, on August 20-21, 2007.
Their agenda? To change hundreds of Canadian regulations, laws and policies — social, cultural, economic, international and security — to match those in the U.S., creating a “fortress North America.
This scheme, originally proposed by the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (a lobby group representing the country’s biggest corporations) has been developing in secret for over four years.
While corporations such as Wal-Mart and Exxon have been heavily involved in this process, the public and Parliament have been completely excluded.
The scheme goes by the deliberately deceptive title “Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP). It is, in fact, a scheme to transfer power from democratic institutions to corporate board rooms.
When decision making takes place behind closed doors, human rights disappear.
“The Security and Prosperity Partnership, sadly, appears to trade basic human rights for continued access to the U.S. market, warned Alex Neve, Secretary General for Amnesty International Canada, and Roch Tassé, coordinator for the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group, in the Globe and Mail.
Write your mp. Do something. rightoncanada has all the places to write for those of you new to speaking up.

| secret meetings? Posted: 8/20/2007 8:17:30 AM | Exxon. Ya. What a wonderful company to bring to a negotiating table and conference where millions of peoples lives and futures are being discussed. They wouldn't know truth if it hit them over the head.
Britain's leading scientists have challenged the US oil company ExxonMobil to stop funding groups that attempt to undermine the scientific consensus on climate change.
In an unprecedented step, the Royal Society, Britain's premier scientific academy, has written to the oil giant to demand that the company withdraws support for dozens of groups that have "misrepresented the science of climate change by outright denial of the evidence".
The scientists also strongly criticise the company's public statements on global warming, which they describe as "inaccurate and misleading".
In a letter earlier this month to Esso, the UK arm of ExxonMobil, the Royal Society cites its own survey which found that ExxonMobil last year distributed $2.9m to 39 groups that the society says misrepresent the science of climate change...

| secret meetings? Posted: 8/20/2007 9:08:03 AM | I'd hate to point out the obvious, but I had a debate with someone who claimed the Liberals had taken over America and ruined it, so I'm gonna bring it up here.
I reminded them, they had. A long time ago. The original government of America couldn't put down a rebellion (Shays?) so the Continental Congress asked those liberal Founding Fathers to recreate the Articles of Confederation, b/c a decentralized government couldn't work by relying on the states to pay in taxes.
The Founding Fathers, as you recall, went behind closed doors and created a new government, with its own Constitution. So, our government has met behind closed doors and had secret meetings before :)

| secret meetings? Posted: 8/20/2007 10:46:29 AM | Exxon? Not even while I can still spell Valdez. Prince William Sound not ring any bells for ya?
I'm sure if you reference the term "clusterfux" in an encyclopedia, there will be a group photo of WalMart's Board of Directors next to it.

| secret meetings? Posted: 8/20/2007 10:48:24 AM | Yes, we know it is not new, my point about knowing where these methods have led us. What are we, collectivly going to do differently? Awareness, education seems pointless, it's all been said before. What we lack is collective action. Like what Denmark did during the second world war. Action,.
We know what Walmart has been doing, they even made a movie about it. yet people still giddily compare what they bought at walmart, and look forward to their shopping trips there. Thanks for the input people. Now, what can we be doing to stop these life changing decisions that "others" are making for our children AND grandchildrens future?

| secret meetings? Posted: 8/20/2007 9:25:14 PM | | Violence has never stopped violence. Negotiations have. We can be a lot more creative than that. talk to your reps. Don't buy products from sweatshop enterprises. Be aware of where you put your money, and how you earn it. Easy. | |

no it isn't,....in fact it gets less so every year,...because more and more people don't have the kind of income where they can choose a more expensive article because of how and where it's made,....the reason Walmart is so successfull is because they tend to be the cheapest,....and today that's all many can afford,....including the worker's of those sweat shops,.....Walmart is a major store chain in Mexico and elsewhere,....not just the USA
There's a staggering increase of people after having spent their lives living paycheck to paycheck find themselves trying to live on a pension,....and that number is growing in leaps and bounds as the boomers get older,....and through modern medicine,....live far longer than their previous generation,....
so no,.... it's not that simple at all and it's incredibly feebleminded to suggest it,.... had it been that simple,...I am sre the solution would have come to another long before you.
You try living on 800 dollars a month (if that),....including food, rent, heat, hydro, etc,...etc,...etc the choices are not between which of the two pairs of pants you should get,...but if you should get heat,....or the phone,....

.........criticized what she called the lack of transparency and consultation in the SPP process. "I'm not impressed that the SPP is making such big decisions on behalf of Canadians without consulting us and when we go out to the streets we're criminalized."
A group of powerful business executives has been invited to make a closed-door presentation Tuesday at the summit on changes they believe the continent needs. No such invitation was extended to scientists, environmentalists, or other social activists.... http://www.cjob.com/news/index.aspx?dir=national&src=ext&rem=./n082051A.xml

Do we realy need another scientist, enviromentalist or even activist to tellus what needs to be done?
what we need is in fact to get the buisiness comunity to tell the leaders how they are planing to get it done from their end,....
and for the leaders to in no uncertain terms tell them they will settle for nothing less,...
|
| secret meetings? Posted: 8/21/2007 9:35:50 AM | Sorry Marita but I believe the problems start with..
<div class="quote">buisiness comunity ... tell(ing) the leaders how
I for one believe it is twisted backwards. "We The People" should be telling Gov't, Business and all what it is we want. Not the other way around.
Edit for below. But Marita they are not listening to us. A poll done during the last Presidential election showed that the vast majority of people thought that Health Care was the single most important issue. Did any of the speakers talk about Health Care? NO! they all avoided the subject.

| secret meetings? Posted: 8/21/2007 9:41:17 AM | to me that's six of one and a half a dozzen of another,...
if those two groups are talking the conversation is lkely to go in both directions,... and talking is never a bad thing,...
as for we the people,....I think we have told or leader's what we want and what we don't,....turn on a news program,...debate,...read a paper we are telling them every day,...we are even telling them herin
|
| secret meetings? Posted: 8/21/2007 6:05:33 PM | Thank you everyone for your concerns here, we need to be concerned. And no, I am not feeble minded, lol, anything but. I know what it is like to live on a low income and to make choices even then, about buying responsibly. Yes it is easy. There are lots of choices we each make every day that could make a difference. We collectively created these systems, and collectively continue to support them, Or we could choose not to. We could choose to create our own buying groups as I did so I COULD afford good local food without poisons for my kids. We could make canning kitchens, buy second hand, do clothing swaps, geeze, there are thousands of creative options that simply, and yes simply, involve getting off our collective "poor me" attitudes and making an effort. Those who do have time to run things can do it on behalf of those who have to ship out to 12 hour shifts. There are many communities creating solutions, and they face the same statistics as the rest of us. Difference is, somebody did something about it instead of whining about how hard it is. | |

| secret meetings? Posted: 9/21/2007 2:09:46 PM | | If you can make the product as cheap or cheaper than overseas, I will spend the cash on your product. Adapt or die, darwin... | |
|
| secret meetings? Posted: 9/21/2007 5:21:37 PM | ''If you can make the product as cheap or cheaper overseas,I will spend the cash on your product.Adapt or die Darwin."
COnsumerism marches on .Dwell on this . Buy same cheap product over end over because it doesn't last or pay a little more for quality.WHich choice will ultimately save you money? Darwins theoryon evolution also covers survival of the fittest which i suppose could still be somewhat adapt or die.Adapt (I shop at wal-mart) or die( I shop local)
|
| secret meetings? Posted: 9/21/2007 5:29:58 PM | If you're careful, and think ahead, you can shop local for the same prices at walmart. You just have to care enough to make the effort.
OP, you are absolutely correct, we do have the power
*wiping bloody nose*

| secret meetings? Posted: 9/21/2007 11:54:44 PM | Check labels. It's easy. Chose local, or second hand. It's easy Plant a vegetable garden, encourage canning kitchens, gleaning parties at local farms, ..a little more effort. Get political about food and water...a lot more effort. But hey, you got something better to do with your life? | |
|
| secret meetings? Posted: 9/22/2007 12:27:10 AM | Adapt (I shop at wal-mart) or die( I shop local) Ahh...yes....the art of short-term thinking.
That same cheap product IS at walmart....
I'd rather buy an item at $100 once that will last a lifetime, than $10 on the same item that I'll have to buy god-knows how many times....never mind the waste created...
Besides....Darwin was talking about evolution...not consumerism...
Here's a thought...

Violence has never stopped violence. Negotiations have. Negotiations without the capability and the willingness for violence are ineffective. German and Japanese aggression in the 1930s wasn't stopped by negotiations.

I say let the canadian and mexican government take care of thier own, for we in the US don't need anything they have too offer....

Welcome to your future.........complements of the NWO.
Oh well, at least we can kick back in our " made in china/bought at wally-world" plastic lawn chairs and watch the traffic zoom past on the NAFTA Superhighway scheduled to run across the great NAU!
