Sweet Tasty and.... Healthy?

So I'm trying to eat better and I love to eat sweets. Candies and fruity chewy stuff. So I'm looking for something that tastes good and sweet but wont be as harmful to me as candy is. Not necessarily dessert but something to snack on. Any ideas?

I think something that also makes this hard is I like the texture of hard/taffy candies.

Well you could purchase sugar free candy, I go to my local Osiris chocolate factory and purchase various chocolates for diabetics. Also for Christmas I make peanut brittle (well pecan brittle) with splenda. I am not diabetic but do want to watch my sugar intake.

I would Google 'sugar freed candy recipes'.

Apple Cotlets, Peach Cotlets, had a box for christmas. Delicious!
Dried Fruit
Homemade Granola? -- I've given my recipe several times, you can add almost any nut or dried fruit you like to it. Definitely more on the hard side of things.

On the very soft side.... oatmeal muffins. I have a recipe that is wonderfully sweet -- like Lay's "BET you can't eat just one!" I know they're not quite what you are asking for but they are easy, basically no fail, and surprisingly satisfying. Muffins using applesauce are healthier, too, and some have a lot of the typical apple pie spices and really capture that essence of apple pie.

As far as getting the most bang for your sugar grams I think Divinity is very near the top -- it can be tricky to make but has no fat or cholesterol and the sugar is greatly expanded by the egg holding more air in. So even a small amount of sugar looks like much more because its is so fluffy. Super sweet tasting -- freezes well, too, so you can have a piece whenever as opposed to eating the whole batch at one time. Not like any of us have ever done that!

Alas girly I know the feeling. I too try to eat healthy but I also have a MASSIVE sweet tooth. One thing to note is that I'm a good girl and eat very healthy during the week. But on the weekends, usually saturday or sunday (sometimes both ) I do allow myself to indulge. When I am on my health kick and I get the sweet cravings dried apricots and cranberries (craisins) help ALOT. I figure if I'm gonna snack it should be healthy. Fresh fruit too is a big help. @ least what you're inputting is sweet and healthy @ the same time. Try making your own trail mix. I know that @ my local bulk food store when I was making my own trail mix I found dried cantaloupe and dried mango. Both have the hard texture that I think you're looking for. Good luck.

^^^^ Slightly off topic but this will be my PSA for today.

That might not be your fault. People, both men and women, can get internally out of balance by an internal problem called Candida. Candida Albicans, if you want to google it and read up on it -- and anyone who thinks there love of sugar is out of control should at least read it and consider it themselves.

CA makes you crave sugar because it digests it rather than your body digesting it. It is also very common to get this CA after getting lots of antibiotics, which is when I got it. Garlic has lots of sulfur which is one of the things that help keep CA growth in check. We all have it naturally in our bodies, its just that once an awhile it can go out of whack. Kind of like we all have strep in our bodies, too, but usually it is kept in check.

Trinity, I hope you don't mind me using your message as an example, nothing personal intended just trying to make more people aware. Sometimes there are reasons why we have certain cravings.

You're on the right track with dried fruit.
Raisins, dates, (good) figs, apple slices and so on are all good 'natural' candy.

I never deny myself a piece of chocolate. I keep a bag of Dove milk chocolate miniatures in the fridge. I eat two. I make myself stop at two but I do look forward to them.

A really good treat is Stoneyfield Farms Frozen yogurt....only 400 calories in the entire pint and the After Dark Chocolate is to die for. So, a scoop or two is not that bad. There are other flavors but I LOVE chocolate and Ben and Jerry's/ Hagen Daas are like voer 1000 calories in the pint!

Frozen all fruit bars.

and POPSICLES>...........they are great in the summer, definitely low cal and take your time eating them.......have 2!!!lol

Healthier alternatives...honeydew.......strawberries, watermelon, cherries, Snackwells cookies(vanilla cremes) are good too.

Angelfood cake w/ strawberries is good

Homemade: Museli bars, Fruit balls, slices etc. Theres too many to list.

If you want to try and lose the sweet tooth but still want snacks :
nuts, dried fruits, vege sticks and dips (ok so not sweet - sue me), crackers and cheese, gosh I dunno - heaps of things.
I snack all day long.. but on low fat things (not because I have to).. and they are probably boring as h*ll to most people.

well to be honest dried fruit still isnt healthy, but if you are willing to keep a good gym schedule u can eat sweets within reason after your workout thats about the only time its good for you other than that if your trying to lose weight id stay away from it as much as possible

i love jelly but it gets boring so i get a nice sized glass and put a few tablespoons of ready made low fat custard at the bottom.....make up the jelly (maybe use sugar free )and let it cool slightly then pour over the custard, stick in fridge and let it set,the custard sets at the bottom and jelly at the top its loverly and you can always make it in a cup with a lid and take it out if your out shopping etc.....my little sister loves this also and adds fruit to hers ie strawberrys to strawberry jelly.usually makes a few glasses, well depending on the size of course lol..hope this helps ok not candy but great in the heat x

Peaches, pears, pretty much any fruit that you can carry with you. Even apples, bananas, grapes and kiwis. Not so much oranges unless you don't mind peeling them. The natural fructose is better for the body anyway. If your looking for something sweet but not fruit, they have some fruit rolls that are reasonably healthy compared to the generic fruit roll-up. As for candy's i'm not sure, I'm on a dark chocolate kick lately, can't be good for you he he.

This is an easy, sweet treat you can grab by the handful. It makes a lot and stores really well.

Popcorn Granola

3/4 c Honey
1/3 c Butter or margarine
1 t Vanilla
3 c Unseasoned popped corn
6 c Quik-cooking rolled oats
1 c Sweet flaked dried coconut
1 c Bran cereal
1 c Crushed shredded wheat
1 c Raisins
1/2 c Sesame seeds

1. In a 12x15" roasting pan, combine honey, butter, and vanilla. Place
in oven and turn heat on to 350'F. Meanwhile, whirl corn in a blender
or food processor until finely ground. When butter is melted, in about
5 minutes, add to pan the ground corn, oats, coconut, bran cereal,
wheat cereal, raisins, and sesame seed; mix well.

2. Bake in a 350'F. oven, stirring often, until richly browned, 40-45
minutes. Cool; serve. If made ahead, store airtight at room
temperature up to 3 weeks.

That actually sounds good, but I wonder if I can substitute the coconut and the sesame seeds. I don't care for the taste of either of these. Any ideas on what to use instead of them?

You can leave out the coconut altogether if you like or if you're allergic. You can substitute the sesame seeds with crushed walnuts, shelled pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds.

okay, the texture isn't right, but how about a kids classic - ants on a log? celery filled with peanut butter, with some raisins on top. Lately, my snack of choice is just a single Japanese cucumber. I just bite them like an apple or banana. It's not a sweets replacement, but they taste good, are easy to carry with me, and make me feel "healthy." They are relatively sweet for a veggie. Tastier than carrot sticks.

Look around for some recipes based on brown sugar only, and real fruits. Stay away from white or bleached foods like white sugar, white rice, or white bread. These are empty carbs that give your body no actual energy, but instead get stored as fat. Instead, choose complex carbs (multi grain, whole wheat, or brown). Although that doesn't give you an example, you'll be a healthier shopper, cook, and eater as a result; but only if you apply it. I've switched to only multi grain bread and pastas/grains and low/no salt/sugar. After a few months of that, I know by tasting something whether it's good to eat or not. I don't mean tasting either lol. I mean GOOD for your BODY :P You can make good things with healthy things though, just substitute one for one. If it doesn't grow from a tree or the ground, or isn't an animal, don't eat it!

Also...If you eat high sugar in the morning (ie lots of cereals) you will crave sugar throughout the day...this is not good! But, if you do crave sugar, eat a banana or some red grapes; they have lots so you'll get your fix and also some great energy and some nutrients your body will thank you for.
