Report Here any Annoying/Scam or Offensive (Ads) Advertisements (NOT Profiles)
Posted: 8/31/2007 8:24:42 AM
This very very annoying advertisement for "smiley faces" and especially the talking ones. The least POF could do is have an icon that IF you wanted to hear the dammed things it would be an option, not forced on people that dont want to hear that crap.

Annoying or Offensive Advertisements ONLY

Please Report all "Annoying or Offensive" advertisements in this thread - although they are what makes this site free, they are automatically generated by the Google Adsense program and may not be screened. If any are over the top, do report them here and Admin will take care of them, if warranted.

Caveat: Do take your own due diligence by investigating any ads by simply Googling the Ad name and add "scam" or "problem" to the search.

If you don't let your mouse wander over the smiley faces they don't talk - just move around them! I know what you mean about being irrated by them. This is the only work around that I've found helpful.

I didn't even know the smiley faces did that! I don't like the flashing advertisements at the bottom of the screen when you IM. I have resorted to putting stickeys over them to be able to block them out. They are VERY annoying and distracting!

I am SICK AND TIRED of these talking ads, both for those damn smileys and now the Applie iPhone. They are grating and annoying. PLEASE STOP THIS.

And getting the IM's to stay minimized until you want to see them would be nice. You can't concentrate on anything because those stupid things are popping up everytime someone sends a message.

Whoever is accountable for such executive decisions should reassess them.

adblock works P Why is it up to the mods to do something about it. People need to do things for themselves more! I have no issue with any smiley face P but at one point I did!! P

It's not up to us to do anything other than to bring it to Admin's attention - shrug.

PS. The only ones that annoy me are the ones that have a much broader area of clickability than one would think,

e.g. the small pink links above the inbox, their clickability extends far more than just the visible link itself - that annoys me when you mis-click on the page!

On my Viwed me Page was a Flashing " You are the 10,000 th person....blah,blah"

It's not the add, but the Flashing part that makes me slightly nauseaus.
Couldn't leave the page fast enough.
Hopefully will not run into that one again.

right on a user's profile - there are two spots to report them

1) underneath their main picture

2) at the bottom fo their profile, blue link labeled Report User

Yep, me too. And it's not uncommon. These ads have been known to cause seizures in susceptible individuals. It's called a photoepileptic seizure, or reaction. They're dangerous and should be removed.

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act (Yeh...I know...this is Canada) disallows the use of these "flickering" ads at frequencies that may cause physical reactions. (I produce online documentation that must abide by this Act.) But policing the entire internet isn't an option at this point. And we're going to come across them wherever the spam type ads are allowed. The best we can do is get off the page quickly.

Oh, the W3C is also concerned with the use of these ads.

The HONDA days ad expands over my inbox whether I click on it or not.
I have sound and all the animation / flash crap turned off that I can, but that bugger is the devil incarnate. And for being so annoying, for the rest of my days, I wouldn't take a HONDA if they gave me one.

Oh and I am not against advertisments on here, just the ones that jiggle, wiggle and such. I actually found the POF site through a random click on another site. But it was a URL sitting there perfectly still not annoying the crap out of me.

Right next to people's profile pics there's suddenly this open woman's mouth with a big black spider in it...

Pretty negative and doesn't make any sense that I can see. I didn't see a title of the product and have looked several times. I don't mind it so much on the banner ads (which until today had been the only place I saw it), but in the profiles it's just way too weird. Some hand held technogeekiethingamajigphoneorsomething...

I don't mind most of the ads. They don't bug me that much so I'm not inclined to block them. This one's a bit over the top though.

I have never seen or heard them. I use the Opera web browser and have Enable Sound in Web Pages disabled.

I also have some other techniques in place that block anything I do not care for. Helps keep my lowly dial up connection running as best it can.

Be. . . all that you can be, poor old dial up connection.

POF seems to be one of the most up-n-up dating sites on the net- why allow 'naughty escorts' ads to show? You've got to have enough advertisers to leave that smut out.

9 of 10 of those ads are seriously dangerous scams that victimize people that aren't savvy to that kind of ripoff. POF gives some credibility to those ads by displaying them. Because we trust POF, then we may be misguided enough to trust the ads.

Admin - I bet you have a huge load chasing down fake profiles, African scammers, webcam kiddies and the like - why allow the scam ads to draw more of this activity to your site?

This is the only criticism I have of POF. I've been on here for years, it's the best I've seen. Keep up the good work and consider protecting your 'school' from the sharks out there ...

^^^ Now at least I know what the ad is... I had no clue before.
I hate spiders. That ad freaks me out every time I see it.
The spider is bigger than the face of the person in the profile.

Actually its an ad for BLOG TV - not for Ipod.
The Apple Ipod is the prize.
The concept is basically how far would you go to win this prize.

^^^^^^Well, if I wanted one I'd go out and buy the stupid thing, lol.

It wouldn't be so bad if the AD didn't pop up every other profile view, I hate spiders too BTW...
