Rogers Scam? (Public Service Announcement)

I got a call the other night from someone claiming to be Rogers Customer Service. They called from (***)***-1243, and were asking a bunch of stupid questions. "Are you enjoying our service?" "Any customer service issues?" and so on. The woman who called spoke very poor english, and seemed to be having trouble with the computer. I humoured them for a while, but then they started asking questions about my address. They asked "Is this a new address?", which drew a HUGE red flag... I've lived here for just over a year now. Then they asked me to VERIFY my address and apartment number, at which time I simply said "I'm sorry, but Rogers HAS my updated information" and hung up. When I picked up the phone a few minutes later, they were STILL there, and I could hear the same woman talking to someone in an east indian language.

If anyone gets an unsolicited call from "Rogers" asking you to verify information, HANG UP!!! Don't verify ANYTHING!!! I called that number back this afternoon and, surprise, surprise. It's not in service!

I received a similar call a few months ago where someone told me that the account number for my bundled service (phone, internet and cable) was different, and that I was to change my banking info and make payments into this "new" bundled account number. A few months later, I received a bill from Rogers that was over $700!!! NONE of my payments were going into my own account. Fortunately, I make all my payments at the Rogers store, and kept all the receipts, so they were able to transfer the payments back to my account.

I don't do any business over the phone - unless I am the one making the contact to the company I wish to do business with. Even if they sound legit - I tell them to mail me any information and take me off their call list. I am with Direct Energy and they called me like 6 times in one week trying to sell me something!!! I hate that!!!

On any and all sales calls remember to politely interrupt the person early in their sales pitch and pleasant say...
"Excuse me for a moment can you please put me on your do not call list."

I was getting numerous calls a week from Rogers from the exact same operator and had to ask for his employee id before they started listening to me. The individual did not even have a strong command of the English language evident by me asking him, " are you just saying yes or do you understand that I want to be put on the do not call list".

It's so ironic that a telephone company would harass it's customers with telephone calls.

I think you're all missing the point... I don't think this was a Rogers representative at all. They were repeatedly asking me to verify my home address and apartment number. I've lived here for over a year, and have been with Rogers for several years.

A few weeks ago, I had someone come to my door claiming they were from Rogers, and needed to check if my phone was working. At the time, I was busy, and had my son answer the door. He told them I wasn't home, and to come back another time.
Low and behold, they never returned.

It struck me funny why they would come to my door and ask to check if the phone was working. Right away red flags went up!

Sounds like a case of telecom re-sellers. They try to peddle the services of the big telecoms for a cut of the pie or build their own client lists. Problem being is that the telecoms don't give the re-sellers their subscribers list. Hence why you'll get these annoying cold calls trying to sell you their products without knowledge of who you actually subscribe to. They'll call under the guise of anything, and if you engage them, the end result is a sales pitch.

Scam or no scam, I put them on mute on my speaker phone. When they hang up, so do I. The record is 14 minutes.

I was getting phone calls on my cellular several times a day from scammers who got my number somewhere. I found out by searching for the phone number on google that others were complaining about the same phone number. It was going on for weeks.
One day it stopped all of a sudden. I figure they must have bothered the wrong person and they did something about it. I reported it to my carrier and they said use my call display and just don't bother answering the phone.

Interesting indeed.

I moved recently and one day I'd a guy at my door saying he was from Rogers and he was here to cut off the previous tenant's Rogers account and had had to come into my home to do it.

I refused him entry and closed the door. Yes, I was alone, too.

I hate to ponder the thought.

Rogers would never send someone to your door without notifying you first by phone. I would be wary of anyone coming to my door and insisting on coming in unless I called to have a tech come out. Perhaps the goal was robbery or rape . Always ask for credentials and ID when service techs come to your house- even if you had an appointment with him. You never know.

Never give out your personal information over the phone unless YOU called the company yourself and you know for a fact that they are a reputable organization. Lately I hear many stories about unsolicited phone calls and emails from Telus, Rogers, TD bank, etc. asking customers to "verify" their address, DOB, sin #, and banking information. There are so many scammers out there nowadays and not enough security measures against them.

What I did once, since my mobile phone is with Rogers is I whipped out the mobile and called Rogers. When the jerk at the door heard what I was doing he must have remembered that there were many other pressing things he had to do because he disappeared very quickly. I say these guys should have checklists or better memories.
