Do muscles/defenition ever play a large enough role in getting you interested in the person when you normally would not be? | |

Guys are turned on by a barely-dressed female, girls do not think the same way. No matter how awesome you look. If you have a nice body a well fitting tshirt & jeans are much better. | |

Personally though, I see it as though it's for entertainment purposes only. I wouldn't want a guy screaming for attention like that. And I wouldn't want a guy who's been showing himself off to the whole planet. It tells me a lot about a person if they are willing to post pictures like that. | |

I personally use one semi-provocative photo on my profile as a sort of "reverse filter" for people who jump to conclusions without bothering to read the wordy bit. They're people I'm quite sure I wouldn't be interested in, so it saves us both the trouble. | |

Posted: 9/8/2007 5:21:05 PM | It tells me the man is active and healthy (likely). It's also sexy (usually, some of you need to take another look in the mirror, weird muscle shapes, flab, etc. If it's not looking good, maybe keep the shirt on).
But I do not think it should be the man's main profile image. Nor should it be 4 of your 5 images.
But as you can see from the varying responses, it won't please everyone. | |

But I do pay attention to the size and shape of his arms in his shirts. That's what I like to see, well defined biceps that are subtle. | |

Posted: 9/8/2007 11:40:07 PM | I can't say that a nice body is unnattractive--but when I see a lot of naked chest and flexed arm pictures on a guy's profile, I sort of can't help but wonder what he's thinking about as he's posing for those pictures, especially when they're ones he's taken himself.
What's even worse is the Derek Zoolander faces guys often make in those pictures--you know, kind of pouty and faux-serious and clumsily seductive. It's kind of a little, well...gay. | |

Also its been shown that contrary to what women actually say they are attracted on some level to a guy with muscles because it shows alot of other good qualities
is a hard worker and is dedicated to physical health and has good genetics. | |

Tawnysummer, I couldn't agree more! Those crack me up too. 
OP - I agree with most of them women here. If they are bare chested and at the beach then it's perfectly fine. If it's a photo of them half naked in front of their bathroom mirror with several photos from other angles showing different flex poses then it makes me wonder what the real motive is. Basically I skip those profiles and move onto the more clothed ones. lol
I like a man who will make me have to use my imagination and not flaunt it before we even meet. | |

Nor do I generally respond to emails from men who post pics of themselves shirtless. It's just a turnoff for me -- not that the male phyique itself but what posting a bare-chested pic says about the person.
When I see that short of advertisement I either assume he a) is vain, b) places a lot of emphasis on looks, c) or doesn't understand the female mind, or at least, a female mind like mine.
Thus, I am not particularly interested. Unfortunately, on a dating site, you make assumptions about people based on the little info you have -- I'm sure I've passed up some great guys becuase I dinged them based on one of my filters, such as posting a pic of his buff abs.
But what are you gonna do? Have to sort and qualify somehow.... | |

The real "posers" make me think of pure arrogance ... health nut, someone who lives at a gym - a perfectionist of sorts. But, I do kinda understand why they would want to show off something they must work pretty hard to achieve...
Interesting how there are no shirtless pictures of farmers or labourers in "working" situations ... where they are actually using their natural muscles (chopping wood, building something, pitching bales or whatever). These types of shirtless pics would likely be more acceptable and attractive to most females .. . this one for sure! lol | |

It tells me that either he's trying to compensate for his other shortcomings or he wants to be appreciated primarily for his body. I'd rather focus on the person's personality and the substance in his words, then if it turns out, when we meet, that physically he's a hunk, then even better. | |

I'm not much on overly muscled guys; but broad shoulders, a long torso and nicely defined muscles in a pic that leaves enough to the imagination will always stop me in my tracks.

Dawn1114 is more accurate than the other posters crying out "immaturity" and "insecurity." It's the opposite, in actuality---I certainly wouldn't castigate a woman if she did the same. If you got it, flaunt it. No problems here.
I think the combination of brains and brawn throw some people off---I've had individuals I've associated with in social circles express confusion at times. For example, I was reading about SE Asian history from a man who has traveled extensively in the area and absorbed much of his experiences paired with general cultural changes, and when I'll gleefully mention how intriguing it was (practiced Indonesian and Filipino fighting styles for a spell, hence my further curiosity). I had the same thing occur when I was reading about new advances in lab experimentation with female hormones (synthetic properties and how it relates to birth control or long term effects with newer products, both pro and con) suddenly people---including a certain percentage of women, become askance.
I guess I'm supposed to be an abysmally dumb beefcake, and when the stereotype cracks asunder, they don't know how to approach it.
