Fake profiles

I have reasons to believe that I have been contacted by someone on PoF who has created a fake profile. When the rules say - no fake profiles - how do you folks monitor that? The person in question sent some pics to my e-mail and they came up under photo shop. I know this isn't exactly conclusive but so many details about this person are not adding up. I suspect that they are using pics that they acquired somewhere online. In fact, I feel that people who have had their pics used should be protected somehow. But I'm a bit of a techno-peasant, so I'm out of my league here. Suffice it to say that I'm fairly certain about this profile being fake, but I haven't reported the user yet, as I have no proof. Anything I can do?

Use the report link found on the bottom of the profile. If you are sure the picture is a fake then also click the link to report as not being a current headshot.

the program used to open photographs is solely based on YOUR SETTINGS, not on the picture sender.

Do you know what the file type is? (not that it matters, i'm just curious)
i've seen some computers where bmps, for example, open up by the graphic arts program because of the users settings

Anything I can do?

If you have no conclusive proof - disengage conversations and move on, not much else you can do.

As for Photoshop, you can pretty much associate any image file type extension (e.g. .jpg .bmp ) to any image editing program that will support opening up that image file - hence it's really no proof or grounds to make that assumption.

Since the majority of image types that are emailed about are of the two above file types, it seems rather overkill to have such an intensive graphics package as Photoshop open them for simple viewing.

You may want to consider defaulting those 2 file extensions to a less intensive image viewer that you have on your machine.

Check this link out if you want to consider changing what image viewer opens your simple pics. --> Folder Options - Control Panel

There's one local guy here who definitely has a fake profile. I know the person in the photo and if it is indeed him, then the content is fake. If it's not the man in the pic, then the entire profile is fake.

There are other issues at hand that make this a concern for me (ie. privacy issues), but other than having a fake profile, he so far has not crossed any other boundaries.

Could the profiles display a joining date? Fake profiles do tend to turn over quickly (according to evidence seen on the forums), so a recent joining date could be another indicator to a dodgy profile.

Other fraudulent profiles could be people lying about thier ages and genders.

Those who are fake could get arrested on fraud charges but usually the get banned from the site.

I have a question.

I know the rules say members can only have one profile at a time, but if that profile is obviously phoney, for example, they claim to be a 90 year old woman in some non existent place.

Is this kind of thing allowed here ?

Many of these types claim they are only here for the forums. I still think it should be prohibited.

Somebody please help me. I've been deceived by someone with a fake profile on this site. I've reported him but I don't know how to remove myself from his Fans list. How do I do that? I'm definitely NOT a fan and I'm sincerely very worried about the other women he's contacted on this site. I'm even worried about him. Sad but true. He needs help.

I too, have been fooled by a profile here. The guy and I talked on the phone for several weeks before finally meeting. We had a lot in common, or so I thought. Then cam that dreadful Monday evening when I got the phone call from his WIFE and then the email from him trying to explain that there were getting a divorce. But in his profile he said he was "divorced". I felt like I had been used, so now I don't trust any male on this site that says they are divorced.

Thank you. I did remove him from my "Favourites" list, but I wanted to remove myself from his "Fans" list, since I'm obviously not a fan. I have since found out that this is unfortunately not possible to do so I will forever be listed as one of his fans... Yikes! Once you're a Fan, you're a Fan forever, whether you like it or not! LOL This really worries me because it gives the appearance that he has many fans and is quite legitimate when in actuality he may not be. Ladies be warned about this feature and think twice before you rate someone as a "Fan".

If a profile is determined to be fake and deleted by POF, does it show up as "moderator or account closed by POF"? Someone told a friend of mine that they reported a fake profile to POF (without even being on POF, is that possible?) and now its showing as "user closed account". I don't want my best girlfriend to be hurt by anyone else.
Thank you!

Not anymore, but it used to Years ago.

Yes. Reported via:Plentyoffish: Help Forms

now its showing as "user closed account".

It means the User closed the Account himself, something that often happens just before the System is about to delete them when they know the Sleighride is over.

yes there is a lot. If you believe its a fake then meet this person and tear him a new bottom (hope thats nice enough). However a picture can be a good one and have been modified for color, brightness or contrast and still ne Kosher!! Now I would like to hear what you will do if you are wrong?? Buy the meal?? or grovel for an apology??

Fake to me means: a picture that is obviously not the person - as in using male model type pictures. Changing your city/state on a regular basis. Multiple profiles.
Although helping my friend through her heartache made me want to tear him more than a new bottom.

I have reported a Fake User 3 times to POF...and have been totally ignored..I have been dating the original owner of the profile and know he has now deleted himself from the site owing to having his profile stolen...the photos show 2 of my friend and one of the fake which is nothing like the other two..I dont know how they can get away with it..and like another lady said..I worry for the people he is duping..the details are still all the same so it makes him look good. Surely the e.mail address can be checked by POF of the faker and if it is not the same as the original there is your answer...it really irritates me when these people can get away with it!

Just cause you havent heard back doesn't mean your report is being ignored.
Admin investigates matters and takes appropriate matters.
Additionally, I wonder, how exactly are you reporting people.
I have found out that it seems to be more effective to email a moderator directly than just report user via profile. Mind you, moderators do not have the same tools available to them as admin does.

I don't. I refer Users to the Report Link. No Point wasting 10 - 20 Minutes of my Time because the Tools to effectively resolve most
User Problems in a Minute or Two are not available to Moderators. Secondly, most of the Time e-mailing Moderators doesn't get the Situation resolved much faster anyhow than using the Report Link. So, People just have to wait until Administration gets to it, Moderators have no Control over that.
