I was in Salt Lake City yesterday, with my mother. I was looking around in the music section, looking for some gothic rock, or something like that. Originaly, I was looking for some Siuoxise and the Banshees, didn't find anything by them, I found the greatest hits cd of The Cure. On the way home, I was listening to it, and thought "This music rocks, I'm going to start buying more of their cds! Maybe even see them in concert, or something". Anyone else like The Cure?

The cure are a great band! Had you heard of them before?

Looking for information about Darkwave should help you find other bands similar. Joy Division, the smiths, New Order, Siouxsie, Echo and the Bunnymen, all bands following after the original punk rise.

What other things are you listening to that come from this century? Always like learning about new music.

Happy Listening.

Hm? I must get my hands on some more of this kind of music. I have been dying for some music like this, I just realized this just now. I have been thirsting for a certain kind of music, I tried hard core, screamo, death rock, many other types. When I listened to the cd, I knew I finally found what I've been looking for. Joy Division? The Bauhas? I've heard of those bands, listened to some of it, must get some of their cds! You've been an awesome help, dude!

I've listened to Green Day((and other bands people don't seem to like too much)), Metallica, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Queen, and many more.

newbie, omg, you have mentioned all the bands I used to listen to as a teenager and beyond. I grew up in London at the height of the punk era, what a great time for music! You forgot to mention the Clash and the Damned, they were awesome too. Now I feel the need to get up and pogo!! lol

"What other things are you listening to that come from this century? Always like learning about new music."

Interpol, the Killers (overrated, but some of their stuff is decent), Perry Farrell's new project sounds abit like New Order, there are other's that I cannot remember...

When is Sisters of Mercy EVER going to put out a new album?

I have to agree with you. Disintegration gets my vote for one of the best albums. I still play it all the time.

I'll add that "Wish" is another favourite of mine because there are several songs on that album which really inspire me. The instrumentals in the beginning of Trust, the get-up-and-dance-wherever-you-are feeling when Friday I'm In Love comes on, all the way to the subtle sadness of To Wish Impossible Things.

The "Wish" album is how I survived high-school. There's no other way to say it. The dark, depressing lyrics fit the emotions I was going through (the typical depressed high-school BS). Listening to it helped me keep it straight in my head that I was not the only one who felt the way I did, and that there was more out there in the world than just the bullying crap I had to deal with at the time.

There's lots of newer bands that are trying to sound like the post-punk new-wave / darkwave sounds of the 80's. Many of them blend it in with harder rock to form what the kids call "emo." My Chemical Romance pulls it off pretty good for a pop-top-40 band. The Dreaming (which includes members of Stabbing Westward) pulls it off even better. My absolute favorite modern darkwave band is a group from Cleveland called Disown. They covered Depeche Mode's "Policy of Truth" and got some airplay with it (and were featured on a DP tribute album). They've got tracks up on their m[y]s[p]a[c]e site.

As for Siouxsie and the Banshees... Junkie XL just released a spectacular remake of "Cities in Dust."

Hmmm... Another one to check out... Robert Smith of The Cure and Steven Severin of The Banshees formed a band in the 80's called The Glove. Their album was recently reissued as part of The Cure's 2-disc reissue series.

Ah yes, the Cure. Very good band in my opinion.

If you are looking for more stuff similar to them, check out a band called James. Their early nineties album "Laid" is very addicting.

James is sort of a cross between the Cure and Radiohead, both musically and chronologically.

I LOVE the Cure. Saw them in concert years ago and they were excellent, though aloof, which was part of their moody 80's vibe I suppose. I agree with the above poster -- James is also a favorite of mine. And we mustn't forget, Lords of the New Church, The Church, Bronski Beat, Bauhaus (Bella Lagosi's Dead - one of the best songs ever), Echo and the Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, Alison Moyet, Kate Bush, English Beat, Peter Murphy, Thompson Twins, Ministry, Heaven 17...so many great bands in the 80's. Boy is this thread bringing back great memories!

I saw The Cure play in Toronto, back in 2003 or 2004, I can't remember the year... but they were awesome!! They really put on a great show! Definately worth seeing live.

I can relate!! I grew up on those bands...brings back memories: I remember going to see the Pixies perform in Chicago in, I think, 1989; the album still rocks. Tone's on tail "Slender Fungus" and "Rain"..."...standing in the shower thinking..." Good times, great oldies...

When is Sisters of Mercy EVER going to put out a new album?

Hopefully never! The last good thing they did--in my humble opinion--was First, Last, and Always...Floodlands was--I thought--terrible, and all of the rest Eldritche's solo stuff was even worse.
Disintegration is pretty good; I remember seeing that show in Chicago when I was a teenager...

My all-time favorite song is The Cure's "A Forest" and The Cure have been my favorite band since my early teens (mid-80's...showing my age). I've seen The Cure in concert five times now, having seen the two most recent shows within the past month (Atlanta on June 15, Charlotte on June 16). Yes, my affinity for this band necessitated a road trip up to Charlotte the next night after their show here in Atlanta and the drive was well worth it, as The Cure varied their setlist quite a bit on both nights. They played for over three hours on each night. Talk about a band that gives us our money's worth.

At the Atlanta show, The Cure played four songs from Seventeen Seconds for their first encore and I'll probably always remember hearing four songs from my favorite album all together like that. On the following night in Charlotte, The Cure played four songs from Faith for the first encore.

If I had to recommend a first-time Cure purchase to people here, I'd advise you to grab one of the greatest hits collections. The best starting point is Standing On A Beach: The Singles (Staring At The Sea: The Singles), but Galore or the most recent Greatest Hits are good to go as well. Since The Cure have such a variety of styles, it's best to simply pick the songs that you like from the compilations and then grab the respective albums from there. You really can't go wrong with any of The Cure's material, though. I tend to gravitate towards the more ethereal dark songs from their catalogue, but they've got some great pop songs out there as well.

I first saw The Cure in concert at a small 1,000 seat venue here in Atlanta for a promo show back in 2000. My friends and I met the band after the show. When I shook hands with Robert Smith, I told him that I enjoyed his South Park episode and he cracked up laughing.

Saw the show in Houston a few weeks back. Awesome show, they are one of my favorite bands but this show really rocked. I've been buying the new tracks every month so far and will keep doing so up through the new album. Can't believe they have been around 30 years.
