| Basic vs Advanced search Posted: 9/22/2007 10:22:27 AM | This is more of a curiosity question. I just did this prior to posting here.
When I do a basic search MSF(43-55, 10 miles from 19702, everything else all) , I get back 79 hits.
If I go to advanced search, and set it up the same way, I get 117 hits.
What's the difference between those two searches?
Also, in advanced search, if I pick <5' as my lower limit, I only get back 114 hits. I've identified one profile where her height is listed as 5-10, but she disappears when I put the lower limit at <5'. I haven't had the time to find the other two.
Just curious ....

| Basic vs Advanced search Posted: 9/22/2007 1:58:39 PM | Actually, the advanced search is not quite what I said. If either height or both heights are I don't care, I get 117 hits. If both heights are NOT I don't care (say <5' to > 7'), I get 114 hits.
The initial confusion is because when I do an advanced search with the upper height = I don't care, the next time I return it's set to >7'. The "only change" I made was to include <5', so I thought that was the defining attribute. After further checking, it's only when neither height is I don't care that the three profiles drop out.
I have the lists on an Excel workbook, if anyone at PoF is interested.

| Basic vs Advanced search Posted: 9/22/2007 8:36:37 PM | What's the difference between those two searches? Different Search Entities for each, just 2 different internal Search Engines.
Although the Basic Search has less Options, you can search by Images and Zodiacs.
 | Hence the Answer to your Question lies in the Coding of the Softwares themselves. |

I guess because I am a database programmer, it fundamentally bothers me that the "same search" returns different results. At least the advanced search returns all the hits in the basic search, plus more.
And again, because I work with databases all day, changing the height range from I don't care to <5' to >7' and having 3 hits drop out would drive me insane. My nature would cause me to work on my own time to figure out why that happened.
Anyway, these are my issues, not anyone elses. I just find it very curious.
Thanks again, Bob | |

| Basic vs Advanced search Posted: 9/25/2007 1:51:09 AM | OK, I admit it, I can't seem to let this go. Another anomily I've noticed.
If I choose I don't care for either height limit in advanced search, then it ignores the other limit.
e.g. I don't care to 5-2 = everyone 5-8 to I don't care = everyone
I suspect though, this is known. I say that because the pages always wants to put >7' as the upper limit. If you believe most people doing height criteria are looking for taller, then just selecting the lower limit "works", as opposed to the examples I listed which "don't work".
I guess this is kinda like doctors make the worst patients.
