| What are some important things you should know when you're a musician? Posted: 9/25/2007 1:27:43 PM | What are some extremely important things, tips, and facts a musician should know? Not just one type of musician, but all, Classical/Heavy Metal/Funk/Blues/Punk musicians etc, etc. For example.
1. Practice!!! You won't get anywhere, if you're just sitting around practice until you improve, and then practice more!!!
Keep your instrument clean. Clean it with a piece of cloth, polish it up, and other things. So that when you're performing, for lack of a better way to put it, it'll look cleaner, and stuff.

- Do it because you love to do it. not because of a big pay-off later. if you are in it for the money, don't even bother. Do it because you love music first and foremost.
that kind of ties in & is relevant with the two things mentioned above (practicing & keeping your instrument clean) If you don't care about your music, it shows.

What are some important things you should know when you're a musician?
Musicians: Just because your friends, your family, your significant other etc. tell you that you're "really talented" doesn't mean that you really are. Get an unbiased opinion.
Don't abuse myspace. I was getting about 10 friend requests from bands per day until I found how to block them.
Don't stick your flyer under my windshield.
If you have music online join SoundExchange so that you get paid for it, that's in addition to your ASCAP, BMI or SESAC.
Join networking groups like the recording academy.
If you need help call Musicares.

save your cash, if you're really serious about playing, and get decent equipment... nothing will sour you on an instrument like playing a piece of junk. that's not to say you should run out and invest thousands on your first instrument... just don't buy crap, then get pissed off cause you don't sound good playing it. even players who have experience sound much worse on lousy gear. do some homework, save your bread, and buy something you'll WANT to play for a while.
and again, reiterating what was already said...PRACTICE...either studiously, or just noodling around, both are beneficial in the long run. and take care of your gear, whatever it is... you paid good money for it... treat it with respect, and you'll get far more enjoyment out of it.

Be open to trying new ideas - even if you don't like them as concepts, try them out before dismissing them
Guitarists - there's a difference between a riff and a song
In a band - it's only your friends that listen to your playing and nobody elses. Encourage everyone to flourish.
If you're not business minded, don't try to run the business.

You can and most often these days get sued if you do not. You can go to the Harry Fix Agency and get the song you want to do licenced and then you are legal.

And that a teacher doesnt necessarily know best. I am finding that out very fast here in Texas. Kicking someone out of ensemble because of the shoulder rest they bought or because all their fine tuners dont match is messed up.

| What are some important things you should know when you're a musician? Posted: 9/30/2007 7:42:24 PM | Some people do it for the money, fame & fortune. Some people do it for the art... I am one of the latter. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing weong with "money, fame & fortune"... I have been in this situation, however, personally, the MUSIC is the reason I play. Yeah, I play material other than originals & I play originals as well. I happen to prefer the blues, which seems to be at a "low" at this time, especially in my region, however, I'm not about to stop playing simply because I'm not "getting rich". Music is an "art" form & most artists do for the art, not the money!

That's just damn good advice. Have known several musicians that got lost in the sex and drugs, but couldn't maintain the rock and roll. Either they had to give it up for the baby, or they got the gift that keeps on giving(STD).

| What are some important things you should know when you're a musician? Posted: 10/2/2007 7:38:00 AM | im a bass player and for me, its knowing how to fit the song and always strive to be creative and unique in everything i play, record or write.

| What are some important things you should know when you're a musician? Posted: 10/3/2007 1:28:02 AM | LEARN MUSIC THEORY.
I feel that if you don't understand what you are playing, than you're not a true musician. It's really pathetic when I start speaking the language of music with another person that claims to be a musician, and they don't know what I'm talking about. As my friend Joe would say, they're nothing more than just a "gig-er."
Seriously, what would you call a doctor that knows little to nothing about anatomy?

| What are some important things you should know when you're a musician? Posted: 10/3/2007 5:43:39 AM | If you play covers: Learn two new songs a week, keeps the show fresh for you and the audience. And as your career progresses over the years you become a human jukebox that gets gigs.
If you write: Try writing a song while watching football, it makes for a snappy number.
On stage: You cant please all the people all the time. Avoid glances from drunk and tone deaf people, your show will reflect them, not you.
LEARN MUSIC THEORY
Yea ! What he said.
Knowing your way around your instrument gives you the ability to "Jam" and "Wing it" with other musicians. Communication between band members and sit in situations are more fluid when you are all speaking the same language.

Music is first and foremost a hearing art. I don't believe that knowledge of theory is an absolute necessity and a limited grasp can be enough. I'm prepared to be corrected on this but I don't think Charley Patton or John Lee Hooker were that up even on blues 'theory'. Hooker in particular was known to play bars of varying lengths and 13 bar patterns.
I'm not one of the 'anti-theory' brigade either. I believe it's a tool that is available and musicians shouldn't be afraid of it. It will not make your music more or less valid either way.
