| does britian need to be in the european union? Posted: 9/26/2007 12:27:31 PM | | Britian would be wise not too because EU is not electable body with accountiblity, and lots of British regulations would need to be rewritten. The british are find with the setup they have right now, but overtime Britian could eventufally withdrawl from the EU if too many rules or regulations are in place where no one is accountable. Look at Sweden they said no to the Euro for the same reason as Great Britian the lack of accountbility. Thacther back in 1980s pull out all the stops to prevent certian EU being impletmented on the British people. | |

| does britian need to be in the european union? Posted: 11/3/2007 4:25:13 PM | Great Britain requires membership of the european union as much as the European union needs Great britain (or the Uk even) But we need to clarify the membership rules as well as state our independance. The opposition parties have wafted the idea of referendum for years now and only when they are no longer in opposition does the promise disappear. My concerns are that perhaps Gordo will hold a referendum with the question loaded or have such limited meaning that the whole exercise will be pointless. especiallly since the old labour gang are already over there on the Eu gravy train agreeing to anything that serves their own needs. (Blair/ mandelson/ the kinnocks) all of which to use a phrase from Grimsby "Lie like flat fish" ie all the time (weapons of WMD/ cheap mortgages/ Fiddling Eu expenses) as clear examples. I love travelling to many countries in the Eu and have lived in acouple. the problem is how the UK interpretes the EU law compared to other member states- in spain they adopt the laws they like from the Eu and everyone ignores the ones they consider stupid. where as we doggedly adhere to them all. Spanish and French complain about our lax benefits systems which is enticing african and east european economic migrants to litter their countries on their way here. so it tells me that the european union clearly isnt working when it come to fixing basic things. Still what can you expect from an institution that agfter all these years cannot decide on where to have its base -the logistical costs are fantastic moving offices between Brussels/Strasbourg its worth a read as we are paying for it! Ok then Rant over, yes we should remain members but only if we can redetermine our membership. | |

| does britian need to be in the european union? Posted: 4/22/2008 6:44:09 PM | yes of course we need to be members. it's simple maths.
a country of 60 million cannot compete against a union of nearly 500 million.
Norway, Switzerland etc. are not the UK so don't compare them.

| does britian need to be in the european union? Posted: 6/30/2008 11:43:55 AM | | I think it would be more sensible for us to make a commonwealth trading union. Instead of confining ourselves to Europe it would give us a foot into America via Canada South America via Belize the pacific area with Australia and NZ and Africa and India would also be great allies to have. The commonwealth all uses the basic premise of British common law and there would be no need to conform to Napoleonic Laws to appease the French. We wouldn't have to be the leaders just equal partners. | |

| does britian need to be in the european union? Posted: 6/30/2008 8:31:54 PM | I would advise GB to have nothing to do with the European Union.
It's only a matter of time before the EU begins to gain power and influence, which will eventually lead to them collectively crushing any member that dares sucession.

| does britian need to be in the european union? Posted: 7/1/2008 8:12:17 AM | The birth of the European Union is probably, no certainly, the best thing that has ever happened in the history of Europe possibly the world and we should take up our place in it with enthusiasm.
It is well on the way to becoming the greatest superpower on earth. A collection of nations, religions, national identities more diverse than anywhere else on earth. No nation who joins loses any of their national identity, they gain a stronger identity. We are the envy of the world and already we see the African Union following our example, the North American Union doing the same with the USA, Canada and Mexico. Unity is the future, isolation is our history.
It is within our lifetimes that many of these nations were perceived to be our enemies. Millions of people have died in conflicts throughout Europe. Now that we are united there can be no more concept of war between these nations than there could be war between Scotland and England or Yorkshire and Lancashire. It is a dream of world unity that our fathers and granfathers fought and died for. It was the British, American and Russian leaders (sic) that carved up Europe for their own greed and political ends. What they did was not to the benefit of those nations trapped behind the iron curtain for 40 years after miilions of our people died to ensure their freedom. Our fighting men and women made the ultimate scrifice that we all might live together in peace and now we do. What better respect could we ever show them than to unite as we do now.
The European Union has nothing that we should fear. It is an amazing democratic union which serves the best interest of the whole union and to that end we here may have to make some sacrifices to acheive that. The alternative to making these sacrifices could be to make the ones our parents and grandparents did in WWII. That can never happen again now.
Wherever you live in the UK, I would be willing to bet that your high street on a Saturday afternoon is filled with the voices of Polish, Lithuanian, Slovakian, Spainish and almost every other member country. Are they not the nicest, friendliest, polite, well educated, multi lingual, hard woirking and respectful people you ever met?. And what a great work ethic they have too . Most of the ones I meet have one or two very good university qualifications and yet they work in somewhat menial jobs and always seem to have a smile and time for a chat.
It was those who are against this union that taught us to hate and to fear these people and the communist regimes they lived under, through no choice of their own, who made us spend trillions of pounds building up our military capability and neuclear arsenal. Just think what we could have done with that money if we had not allowed Churchill and Stalin to do what they did and enjoined in this union after the war ended which is what our soldiers fought and died for.
Now we have met them and gotten to know them a bit better, we can see how badly this money was spent. Not only do they not pose any threat to us and our way of life, they do seem to have faired quite well under communism and are now valued members of our society.
It is a pleasure to have them in this country and if they are typical of the people are children will now become as Europeans, then we should rejoice at being part of it.
Economically, it will make us once again into a world superpower better than America or anywhere else. The Euro is the currency of the future. We should engage with the rest of Europe and be sure that we are central to it's function and it's decision making processes rather than standing on the perifery. London should rightly be the capital of Europe, the city of London the financial capital and the British people it's strongest advocates.
They might have Disneyworld, the florida keys and a few other things, but we have Rome, Paris, Milan, London, Scotland, and a whole raft of other places which make our new country the finest on the planet. We are a model to the rest of the world of how to resolve historical hatreds and mistrust and the removal of the borders that once seperated us is one that will inevitably be followed. We lead, they follow. Making Britain great again through our membership and from our place in the Commonwealth of nations. back on top where we belong
I am proud to be a European, as proud as I am to be English or British or even a Lancastrian.

| does britian need to be in the european union? Posted: 7/1/2008 3:43:28 PM | European Union countries consider granting authorities unprecedented spying powers over their own citizens .
Andreas Hellsten, a 37-year-old engineer, said the new law reminded him of something the dreaded East German police would have dreamed up had e-mail been around during the Cold War. "It looks too much like the Stasi," he said.
"Since 1766, we have had freedom of expression ... Can that be guaranteed if the FRA has the right to monitor, for example, all e-mails from abroad?" Thomas Mattsson, digital editor of the major Swedish newspaper Expressen.
This paves the way for a surveillance society, like George Orwell's novel "1984" about a fictional futuristic police state.
The EU, will accomplish what the Third Reich only dreamed of... Once you realize what a mistake the EU truely is it will have you in it's clutching fist from which there will be no escape...

| does britian need to be in the european union? Posted: 7/1/2008 4:17:34 PM | No it does not. The other countries in Europe are the ones needing Britain in. Germany and France pretend they do not need Britain but they do and want it badly. Only Britain have real allies around the world. Particularly the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. There's more. Germany has no former colonies and Quebec pretty much was abandoned by France. They have Haiti though. Only Spain like Britain, have many former colonies and in good terms. Except for Venezuela. The king told Chavez to shut up several months ago. Chavez is still crying over it. | |
