Bananas!

Hi all, wonder if anybody out there can solve a small problem? It's a bit daft, but still driving me crackers!

I moved into my flat three months ago, and am basically having problems storing my bananas! When I first moved in, I just kept them on my worktop, only to find I was having to compete with a bunch of fruit flies for 'em! (At least, I assume they're fruit flies, little tiny things - the adventures I had chasing THEM round my kitchen are another story....)

So I thought, ok then, I'll keep 'em in the fridge, they should be safe in there.....and in no time at all they were going rotten! My question then is, just what is the best way to store bananas? I never had this problem before!

And another thing - what's the best way to get rid of those pesky fruit flies?!

The brown bag will make them rippen faster, but that's still probably the best method I know of.

Half the world eats bananas raw and sweet, while the other half cooks it as a starchy vegetable. Whichever way you choose to partake of this tropical fruit, careful storage can make bananas all the more enjoyable.
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Steps
1Step OneLeave bananas in a closed paper bag at room temperature if they are not yet ripe.
2Step TwoPlace an apple in the bag to speed ripening. The apple gives off ethylene gas, which causes fruit to ripen.
3Step ThreeOnce bananas become ripe - that is, yellow in color, speckled with a bit of brown - put them in your refrigerator, preferably at a temperature of about 50F (10C).
4Step FourStore for no more than 2 weeks.
5Step FiveOnce cut, sprinkle with citrus juice to stop them from browning too quickly.
Tips & Warnings
Avoid refrigerating unripe bananas, as they will never ripen.
Mash and freeze ripe bananas, in one-cup portions, or freeze whole, peeled bananas in plastic bags, for use in later baking.

I use to have areal problem with fruit flys, my friend introduced me to these fruit fly traps that in my opinion were very expensive so i made my own.... works great!!!!

Take a small bowl or ramikin place some balsamic vinegar 1/2 way up and cover tightly with plastic wrap, take a toothpick or something similiar and prick some holes in the top. The fruit flys are attracted to this and enter the holes to get to the vinegar but can't get out, fantastic no more annoying fruit flys buzzing around.

Do a search for green bags for fruit storage. There are several websites that offer them and I've started seeing them in stores (at least here) as well. They actually work! It's amazing how long things last when you put them in these bags. And they're reusable too.

A tall bottle or bud vase with a little vinegar in the bottom. They think it's alcohol, then go in, it makes them woozy and they drop down and drown. I keep one near all my fruit, year round. No fruit flies ever!

Thanks Iris43! I will have to try this... have a problem with fruit flys this year. I wonder if it's the peach tree just outside that has attracted them.
Wonder why balsamic vinegar, the clever lil things never seem to drown in my juice.

I'm not sure I tried honey once vinegar seems to do the trick, I came across it accidently. I keep a oil vinegar with pour spouts on my counter and were forever finding fruit flies in the vinegar. tadah hence now I keep a bowl full and it works...last year was really bad for me, seems the little buggers lasted till mid November this year hardly noticed them.

I like those banana hangers...

I eat a banana in my daily morning smoothy, so I only buy 4 bananas at a time... they don't go bad in 4 days. (Plus, I like my bananas a little on the green side...)

Banana hangers are good but I know what you mean I have the same problem.
So basically what I do now is buy only a couple bananas at a time.....I'll buy maybe three of four at a time and try to eat one a day.

If they ripen faster than I expect them to then I freeze them and make banana fritters on the weekends.

Thaw frozen bananas at room tempertaure.....
Crush with potato masher
Add flour, a pinch of salt, tablespoon or so of sugar (eyeball the sugar, since the banana is sweet already)
(Cinammon is optional so is vanilla)

Batter should be pancake like batter.....drop with ladel into oil or you can use PAM spray. It takes usually 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.

Put on papertowel to draw out excess oil. Sprinkle with sugar or powdered sugar (optional)
