Windows error when IE closes
Posted: 9/28/2007 9:29:10 AM
Compaq laptop running Windows XP Home sp2 uses IE 7. (sorry it belongs to a friend and he likes IE7) Every time IE 7 closes, we get an error message that says,
The instructions at 0x02faf2c0 referenced memory at 0x0000ba0. The memory could not be "read"
Trust me I've done a google search on both those error numbers and still come up empty handed. The only time this error ever shows up in when you close Internet Explorer. I put Comodo antivirus on there. Winows Defender and Superantispywhere. It connect to the internet through a wireless lan connection, no software installed. The only thing I can find unusual about the machine is if you go to System, it shows 348 mgs Ram, and if you look at System information it shows 512mgs Ram.
Naturally the first thing I suggested was to switch to Firefox, but he LIKES Internet Explorer 7.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi scheherrazade - I've seen your postings on computers before and I think you're pretty computer savvy - This is going to sound funny but have you defragged lately? Also, did this error occur with IE6? There are known and unknown bugs with IE7 that haven't been worked out yet. If machine is working fine with that exception I wouldn't worry about it.

In answer to your other question is the ram is 512mb and only showing 384mb (not 348mb), it would be an onboard video using 128mb of conventional memory.

Trust me I tried to get him to switch to Firefox. He likes IE7.

CC, I reformatted and reinstalled Windows, did all the updates and had it running just fine. I never choose to install IE7 because I do not like it. HE installed IE7 once he got it home and started getting this error message. I checked Windows updates, I checked Compaq updates. I searched for the error codes. I've run out of ideas to try.

And sorry. System shows 348mgs ram, I mistyped.

I got the same type of error when closing another program (not IE7). The program was AutoCAD Release 14. This was an old program so I thought it was a compatibility problem with WinXP. Tried running it in Compatibility Mode and still the same problem. So just for the heck of it, I created another partition on the hard drive, uninstalled AutoCAD from the WinXP (C:) partition and installed it to the new partition ... then the problem went away. Don't know if it'll work with IE7. Can IE7 be installed separate from the OS???

Completely guessing here, but .....

Many odd IE7 errors are caused by "browser add-ons". In IE7 go to .....

Tools/Manage Add-Ons/ Enable or Disable Add-Ons

Try temporarily disabling all add-ons and see if problem persists. If problem goes away re-enable add-ons one by one until the offender is located. Good luck!

My research indicates the need to run a memory test.

If the OP wasn't as well versed as she so obviously is with computers, I would recommend taking the computer to a pc tech.

Seen it for Years ... can't say it was the same Error Message ... common Denominator used to be IE 6.x after Updates and Service Patches. Never found out which one was responsible for it.

My Compaq E-500 Laptop was the most notorious of the lot in Respect to these type of Error Messages.

I am still running Win98 & IE. 6.x on it ... and still the same Error Messages. Doesn't happen with any other Software. So I use Firefox on it too, Problem solved !!!

Many odd IE7 errors are caused by "browser add-ons".

Because the Update and Service Patches are kinda "Add-ons", that sounds just about right.

Other than memory problems, it could be a bug in MikeySoft's code somewhere.

Most likely ...

Naturally the first thing I suggested was to switch to Firefox, but he LIKES Internet Explorer 7.

Maybe a good Dosage of Reality Adjustment might be called for.

ok..by chance do you have Google Tool bar or even the Yahoo Tool bar ?? if so go into VIEW then to TOOLBARS then uncheck either or both...there are some machines that have a problem with them trying to write to non-existant memory

A few things for consideration....

1) faulty\defective memory (unlikely IF everything else gets along without errors)
2) Video or chipset drivers with a memory addressing bug exploited only by IE7
3) Bios\chipset\memory compatibility issues

With regards to #3 my Panasonic laptop is extremely fussy about what brand of memory you stuff in it...took me 3 tries to find some that it would get along with
