How bad is Michigan now? Seems that we've officially run the entire state into the ground. The government is shut down which means that when the liquor stores are out, they're not getting any more, no more selling lotto tickets, no government services, only 10% State Police (I guess we could use I-75 like the autobon), at least there's no road construction. I'm looking for volunteers to help me move the orange barrels off the road. How sad is it though, that we have the highest forclosure rate, the highest unemployment (almost double the national average), and the second highest paid law makers. Maybe we should just stop fighting it and break up the state and sell it in pieces to Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and maybe some to Canada.

Hey

Well you folks may want to try Ontario, (you're big bro next door neighbours ), our quality of living in this part of the world is in the top 20's nationally, our law enforcements are second to none, we care about what the people want and what they need (just ask Daulton Mguienty(SP?)....the Ontario Premier....which is the equavalent to your Governors in the States), we beleive in 5 star hospitality, atleast in my town we do .....we have awesome lotto tickets by the way with awesome chances to win big every week.

But I know what you mean and it's not easy for a state to go through what Michigan is and I hope you guys find a way to make things better, but luckily you people have great friends with Ohio, Indiana, Ontario and Wisconsin.

Best of luck and I hope your Tigers, and Lions .....and Bears (for the Chicago Bears fans out there), have better luck next season!!

Ontario is? In the top 20s? Nationally?

You DO realize there are only 10 provinces, right? Three territories? Even if you separate Labrador from Newfoundland, that's still only 14 jurisdictions! Good thing Ontario makes the top 20!

Well, you could probably sell the uppers to Canada. They think they're Canadian anyway. Most of Detroit should probably just be sunk into the lake; I don't think anyone will buy that part.

Michigan has been hurting for years. One of the reasons is the decline of Ford and GM.

I read their solution is to increase sales and income taxes.

Anybody that has anything going for them has either left that state or they are planning to do it in the near future.

LOL... I meant Ontario in terms of it being in Canada and I was saying in relation to other nations, that Canada is in the top 20's. Sorry for the unclearness in my wording there lol.

I hear you and Indiana is going to be in the same boat soon. At least you state did not build a brand new airport and huge........ huge Lucas dome for their football team. Then Send the bills out to home owners that doubled and tripled their property taxes.
Then the public went out and in masses dumped their tax forms into the river after the first colts football game and the governor said he would re look at the taxes........... They would see how the other states are dealing with the tax issue.............HUMMMMMM the other states did not build a bunch of projects their economy could not support!!!!!!!!!!
Most of our economy has been dissolved by the incoming China products and they keep telling the public they are going to be a service industry? Servicing what ??? I may ask....... I watched Chrysler chop up their new foundry they had just invested 1 billion dollars into a few years ago and last year chopped it up for scrap and subbed the work out to south Africa.... I have been to auction after auction of liquidating of companies that have been around for 80 to 100 years.......... gone never to come back again.......all the equipment being scraped for scrap metal....
And dont even get me started on government ear tag spending that is going on right now...........

Well, they did it....they "continued" the budget to avert the shut down until about 6:00 this morning and then passed raising the income tax and extending the sales tax to include about 30 services like lawncare, haircuts, etc. Increase income tax? Why punish the 40% of the state that's working? Oh well. Thanks for the tip on Indiana...I was thinking of moving that way. Any other suggestions? I really don't want to go through another winter like last year, but still need to stay relatively close for a couple elderly family members. I turned down a job offer in Tennessee. 10 hours away is out of the question, but 3-4 is managable. Looks like Michigan will be back in business tomorrow, but I strongly suspect that there will be massive recall petitions floating around.

thank the UAW?

demanding higher wage/benefit packages than most univeristy professors get?
at LEAST $35/hr. with benefits factored in? with over-time, a lotof plant floor guys getting over $100,000-$110,000 in salaries, with benefits and pension contributions factored in, more like $135,000-$140,000/yr..

yeah, sort of difficult for Detroit to compete with Taiwan, Mexico, et al at $4or so /hr.. ?

blame Canada? maybe Jen Granholm is wreaking her 'revenge' ?

Michael Moore to the Rescue?? LOL :)
Posted: 10/1/2007 8:11:14 AM
then again, weren't "all the experts" predicting the demise of New York City around 20-25 years ago? I seem to recall reading about that...

couldn't pay their bills, debt due on municipal bonds, etc., etc..?

Maybe Michael Moore will "save" you?

...or maybe he will just get richer making yet ANOTHER exploitative flick purporting to tell "the truth, and only the truth", but in fact, heavily edited to make the point he wants made...

I guess it's better to have a few guys making $35 + an hour, some to sleep on the job, and the rest who didn't have a daddy in the union to get them in, to get zero..or get that for a while then get zero when the plant moves to Mexico..

I love all the union guys who have bragged to me about sleeping for half their shift (at least), toking up, drinking hard, getting drunk on the job, deliberately sabotaging new cars as they go down the line, for "fun" or a "joke"....then get laid off, and wonder why?

oh, woe is me..

Thank the UAW is right. They made it impossible for other businesses to squeeze in. If other businesses needed an electrician, for example, they couldn't compete with UAW. How can anyone try to start a business and offer employees the same wage and benefits. UAW drove up the price of health care and the prices for everything because their people could afford it......what about the families that didn't have someone working for the UAW? So now that the UAW backed Jenny for re-election and got her in office, where are they? Oh, that's right......all the retirees move back to where they're originally from...the south. Start the tumbleweeds rollin!!!!

ya, the old lets blame the union for our woes play. It's obvious to me, because I am in a union, that people who are not get jealous. They get mad at us because we stand up and demand better wages, but hey, if you're happy making $6/hour and enjoy crappy working conditions, by all means, continue to do so. How many of you whine that the big whigs at these plants earn money in the millions, yet they complain about paying the workers benefits? GM can't afford them, lol, whatever, lets see who gets a nice severence package when they leave the top, but it's ok coz they're the big players eh? Sitting at a desk and earning millions while people work on the line for $35/hour, and you have the nerve to blame unions, F' you man.

Sorry to hear about your situation OP. As for uaw, it looks like you can expect a couple of more plant closures in Mich. and Indiana.

Your governor signng the documents at 4 this morning brings your state a 30 day continuance, so it doesn't sound like you're any where near out of the woods yet. You're going to be getting a higher rate of income tax and a new sales tax. Good luck.
------------------------

Michigan Lawmakers Reach Budget Deal

...The Legislature agreed to raise Michigan's income tax rate from 3.9 percent to 4.35 percent and expand the 6 percent sales tax to some services. Granholm signed both measures. Structural changes to state government—including the management of teacher and other public employee benefits—also are part of the package..

The sales tax would not apply to tickets to sporting and entertainment events or accounting services. But businesses and consumers would pay the tax on ski tickets, administrative and investment services, consultants, warehousing and storage, interior design, commercial landscaping and janitorial services, among other services.

Raising the state's income tax to 4.35 percent will raise an additional $765 million for the state. The income tax bill is written so the rate will gradually drop back to 3.9 percent between 2011 and 2015.

Extending the sales tax to some services starting Dec. 1 will bring in an estimated $614 million for the 10 months remaining in the fiscal year at that point, or about $750 million annually, state Treasurer Robert Kleine said.

Granholm signed a 30-day extension of Michigan's budget, which expired at midnight. The continuation budget keeps government running

GM May Close 2 More Plants Under Deal
DETROIT (AP) - The tentative contract between General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers would allow GM to close a plant each in Michigan and Indiana and possibly shut down several other facilities, according to a detailed copy of the agreement...

The agreement would let GM sell or close a stamping plant in Indianapolis and close an engine plant in Livonia, in suburban Detroit.

...A stamping plant in Flint and a small powertrain operation in Parma, Ohio, near Cleveland, also may be in jeopardy, according to the document. For the Flint plant, under the heading "Product Opportunities," the document says only that the UAW and GM will explore opportunities for current Flint employees...

Democrat President William J Clinton and Democrat Al Gore Jr fully supported NAFTA. Clinton signed it into law. Here is an excerpt from President Clinton's speech September 14, 1993...

"We will make our case as hard and as well as we can. And, though the fight will be difficult, I deeply believe we will win. And I'd like to tell you why. First of all, because NAFTA means jobs. American jobs, and good-paying American jobs. If I didn't believe that, I wouldn't support this agreement. "

and...

"Under NAFTA, the Big Three automakers expect to ship 60,000 cars to Mexico in the first year alone, and that is one reason why one of the automakers recently announced moving 1,000 jobs from Mexico back to Michigan. "

Hey how low would the pay in Michigan have to be in order to compete with Mexico anyway?

Rats on the continuance. I saw a real job opportunity here. I was going to revive my great grandad's rum running business. We Texans couldn't let our Michigan brethern do without a little drink to soothe their woes.

see, this is what's killing our industries. Sure, I agree it's not right for ceo's to make millions a year while labour only makes 100k, but all are guilty of greed. Sadly, the little man is the only one who is paying for his sin. Those who worked on the auto lines in Detroit; wouldn't they now be happy to get $20 an hour? We had a paper mill here in our town that was losing money. Labour was asked to take a 30% cut in pay. Most of them would still be making over $800 a week gross after the cut but the union refused the offer so the mill closed for good and will now be torn down. A lot of those workers are in real financial trouble now. It's probably too late now, but my intuitive advice to organized labour some time ago, as I saw the international free trade nightmare unfold was to be reasonable and just maybe, you might keep working.

people should be pissed that CEO's and other greedy **stards on the top get to retire with fat wallets, more money than any of us would ever see. Especially if they are leaving a company that is LOSING money. Where is the logic in that, pay some guy who didn't help the company whatsoever? Here's your reward, even though you failed to do anything. Logic people, logic

I worked at the Ford plant (1986-1988) in Oakville for 16 months and that is how i paid for my education.

Only a small number of autos job have disappears from Ontario.

The reason the Big 3 have NOT reduced jobs in Ontario is because of OHIP.

They only need to pay payroll taxes for CURRENT employees and NOT retired ones

In the USA they have to pay health premiums for CURRENT and RETIRED employees.

GM pays more for health insurance than STEEL.

There is a new Japanese auto plant starting production next year and being build and about 6 new factories making parts for Japanesse car assembled in Canada that start production next year.

UAW drove up the price of health care and the prices for everything because their people could afford it

The high cost of health care is because of the private health care insurance companies and there need to maximize profit

The solution is to pass HR 676,

......what about the families that didn't have someone working for the UAW? So now that the UAW backed Jenny for re-election and got her in office, where are they? Oh, that's right......all the retirees move back to where they're originally from...the south. Start the tumbleweeds rollin!!!!

The retired autoworker are getting the shaft from health insurance companies just like everyone else.
