Posted: 10/1/2007 8:31:45 PM | Yes,it's short for emotional.Just one of those catch phrases or labels suppose to mean the type of young people who have a generally dark outlook for lack of a better word,who are generally depressed or self-mutilating.Just a new name for a young person who is having a hard time dealing with being a young person in society.That's the best I can come up with.  | |

Of course ignorance plays a role here if it means something different in reference to kids. | |

Posted: 10/5/2007 6:02:42 PM | I have a niece who is Emoish. I worry about her sometimes. She's a good kid and has friends but its just hard to get her to join in family things plus to get that hair out of her face and have a conversation with you.
I went through a similar phase at her age so am sure she'll be fine but it would be so nice to see her looking happier and not be faced with a "I'd rather not" attitude when it came to joining in with family stuff. | |

Posted: 10/6/2007 3:17:52 AM | | I asked this exact question to a group of my sons friends who are all ranging in age from 17-21....., my son is 19 and referred to as an EMO boy...I was told it use to mean emotional, self-mutilating and dark but now it is referred to according to the kids EMO boys are boys who spend more time and attention on their appearance than girls their age, usually wear a lot of dark colors and make-up and who are more intouch with their emotions and are talented in music or other art forms......my son is 19 wears super skinnies for pants and wears a lot of black and dark purple, wears make-up and black nail polish, is the lead singer in a band and draws and designs tatoos and is worse than a woman when it comes to making decisions he changes his mind like the wind...oddly enough there are girls out there that search for EMO boys all the time and love the drama associated with them ..... | |

Posted: 11/2/2007 5:17:34 AM | having watched with interest the past few years as my kids have grown and developed their own personal fashion, (and i use the term loosely believe me) sense, it seems to me that the term is much more about style than anything else.
my eldest daughter is considered by her peers to be emoish.....which appears to be based purely on what kind of music she likes, and what type of clothing she prefers.
it really doesn't seem to have anything to do with how she feels or expresses herself emotionally.
personally i rather like the look....its hip, fun, unexpected shots of colour and beats the hell of all the young gals who are prancing around school with 6 inch heels, bared midriffs and clevage. | |

Amongst teens, Emo is now an increasingly derogatory term, because if your mom knows what it means, it's lame.
For adults, Emo is a mainstream consumer trend designed to get parents to pay for this latest round of black clothing and accessories.

not necessarily.....having received "worlds coolest mom" award, by both my kids and their peers, albeit even if it is interspersed with the pre-requisite "i hate you's" and "you don't understand's", has been known to give a bit of an edge.

besides; its alway been my experience that the preppies dislike the homies who dislike the goths, who don't like the girly girls, who hate the metalheads, who can't stand the doofuses and on and on and on.....its a rite of passage! :) | |
