It is a new war on illegal immigration that grows increasingly visible and more intense by the day.
"I think we're talking about something the American people have never seen before, which is what do we do and what do we see when the government gets serious about using all the legal tools available to make the law work and to enforce the law," Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff told ABC News in an exclusive interview.
"And that's why there has been a tenfold increase or more in the number of absconders [fugitive aliens] that we've rounded up and sent back. And that's why there have been dramatic increases in our removals, [and] we've gone from one or two criminal cases five or six years ago to about 800 criminal cases this past year, because we are really pulling out all the stops," Chertoff continued.
Across the country, federal agents have been raiding businesses and homes in an unprecedented campaign targeting illegal immigrants.
Just last month, federal agents conducted work-site raids in seven cities, arresting nearly 200 undocumented workers. Another 2,357 illegal immigrants previously ordered deported were also rounded up.
In the last week in California, 1,300 illegal immigrants were arrested -- one of the biggest sweeps in recent memory. On Long Island, authorities rounded up 186 people -- most are believed to be gang members. In Nevada, more that 50 workers at McDonald's restaurants were recently targeted.
But the raids have sparked protests in a frightened and frustrated immigrant community.
"They're not criminals. They want to work," said one protestor. "We want to do things right for them and for this country."
The expansion of the government's deportation efforts has been dramatic.
According to immigration officials, in 2003, only 1,901 alien absconders -- those who had been ordered by a court to leave the country but remained in the country in defiance of the order -- had been arrested.
So far this year, more than 30,000 individuals who've ignored their deportation orders have been arrested.
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement -- an arm of the Department of Homeland Security -- credits its Fugitive Operations Program with a reduction in backlog of alien absconders. The program, which has 75 teams working across the country, also works to ensure that immigration judges' deportation orders are enforced.
"For the first time we're beginning to see a reduction in the fugitive alien backlog," Julie Myers, head of ICE, said at a Wednesday press conference in Los Angeles. "We're down now to approximately 595,000 illegal alien fugitives, down about 36,000 from the beginning of this fiscal year.
"We obviously have much more work to do, but I think that's great progress," she said.
The number of undocumented workers arrested at raids on businesses skyrocketed from 445 to 3,651 over the same time frame.
When a comprehensive immigration bill went down in flames this summer in Congress, Chertoff said he was left with one mandate: Enforce the law. In his Thursday interview with ABC News, he was blunt, offering no apologies.
"For many years the way we dealt with illegal immigration was, we paid political lip service to toughness," he said.
Chertoff contends the government has faced a lot of resistance in the enforcement of the laws, but said, "If you believe that we need to find a way to address the need for workers and we also have to have a humane way to resolve the 11 million who are here and their status, then we do need to go to Congress. We need to get a comprehensive set of legal reforms that will address all these issues, and we've supported that."
"If you choose not to do that, and you say, no, we want enforcement, then we will enforce, and we're not just gonna pay lip service to enforcement. We're gonna enforce using all the tools that are available."
So more raids -- a lot more -- might be on the horizon.  | |

An American Hispanic man got a job at a construction site. After 8 hours, he went to check out. The boss said, "Where do you think your going?"
The man said. " I have put in my 8 hours. I was checking out."
The boss said," Oh no you don't. You will work 10 to 14 hours. Or whatever I tell you to."
The American said," Well we never discussed overtime, what do you pay?"
The employer said," The same wage you were getting. No overtime pay. I have 40 Mexicans over there that will do what I say for the same wage. If you don't like it leave."
The American/Hispanic man said, " Fine, I will not work like that. It is illegal and I will be turning you into the Labor Board."
He turned that company in. Do not know the outcome yet.
This is what the Americans are facing. it is getting harder and harder to find jobs. The Mexican laborors are being used as slave labor. Also, it is hurting the living standards of the Americans.
This is our country. We had better vote only for those who will protect our interest. Americas interest. Not big labor companies. Both parties are now corrupt.
Because of all the illegals, the companies are oversized, building up the land way too fast and it is ruining this country. This generation is using up everything and leaving nothing for future generations.
How much money does one really need. Isn't this the most gross example of GREED YOU HAVE EVER SEEN?

The New War on Illegal Immigration
I suspect that it is more security theater, just like the new airline/airport security. It will allow the government to claim they are doing something to address the problem, make people think the problem is being addressed because they see things happening, but not really matter in the end. Once the public again becomes complacent, the drama will cease. El Presidente Jorge will not permit it to happen too long; he has an agenda to achieve. SPP, anyone?
We can find the illegals fairly easily. Wage reporting identifies people with false or duplicated SSNs. I suspect that we will see raids until the public believes the government got the message, then another scamnesty will be slid in and the raids will cease.
Employers love to claim that the illegals are doing work that Americans will not do. Anyone see any meat packing plants closed for lack of workers after a raid? Of course not. The next day the plants were hiring, and there were lines of applicants. Doesn't sound like a lack of interested workers to me.
Dry up the demand for illegal immigrants, and most will leave. Employers want to hire illegals because there are significant economic advantages to doing so. Fine, then remove the advantages. Instead of $500-1,000 fines per illegal that was hired, make it $25,000-50,000 per and throw in jail time for the CEOs and HR personnel. Lower fines are just factored in as a cost of business. There is an agricultural temporary worker program, but it does not get used because it is cheaper and easier for companies to hire illegals.
End the foolish practice of granting citizenship to children born to illegals. There is no justice in rewarding criminal activities.
Secure the border. That is a given, and is one of the few Constitutionally mandated functions, yet the government is not interested. Right now it is illegals and drugs flowing over the border. What happens when it is a nuke?
If this continues, then it will be promising and will count as good news. Right now it is not clear that this is a significant departure from years of "catch and release" actions. | |

We need to get a comprehensive set of legal reforms that will address all these issues, and we've supported that." this was done with only limited resources, then with full compliance from Congress and help from Bush this problem could be over within 3 years, how you ask? the problem could be dealt with humanely by creating a chip to be placed on the ID 'S of the 11 million that are already here ,which when scanned it would intel the marital status and the the number of dependents of that person........as for the workers give the same chip embedded in the ID but include a finger print, which would verify who that person is in case an ID match is needed,......and in both cases. when the ID is renewed..... allow extra ID'S verifying the dependents of the head of house hold...to be handed down to the dependents........this would only apply to the 11 million that are already here ,and the workers......make it mandatory for the worker to automatically renew his or her ID'S when a child is born into a workers family...........and as far as the absconders he or she wouldn't have the ability to possess either, which intern would clearly show that he or she is illegal ..if the absconder tried to forge the ID the finger print wouldn't be consistent with the absconders... own , this chip should also be able to track the worker by satellite....until residency is granted,and to eliminate the monogamy ,in force fingerprints on all ID'S so to insure that know one ethnic group of people feels they are inhumanly treated , and the purpose of the legal reform can be clearly understood, and the chip along with the fingerprint could also work along side the bar code located on the back of the ID to help law enforcement agencies.......this new legal reform would have to also make it mandatory to renew license or the ID regardless of the expiration date within the first 18 months for the 11 million that are already here , 12 months for the workers, 2 years for every one else..............and with the current rate of deportation of absconders, with one full year of everything being implemented by the year 2010 the problem should be significantly under control.........................bottomline becuase of greed by big and small business there is a desire for illegals to want to come here..because they know that there's always work ...and if something is not done soon it will get out of control......and eventually be to late........................just a thought get'em | |

As long as the perceived value of life in USA is considered better, people from all over the world will want to come to work and live here. It's... "the pursuit of happiness". If Mexicans or even Canadians want to come in USA, illegally, there is not much you, or the government can do. Stop being cold hearted ****es and and angry morons and realize that everybody should actually work 80% for the sake of others and 20% for him/her-self. If you disagree with it and refuse to do it, or at least seriously work at doing it, then you prove yourself to be a.... CANCEROUS CELL. And the Universe must terminate you. You, your children, parents and relatives. Go ahead and argue about it, go ahead and hate Mexicans, hate everybody, hate yourself, hate the world and.... more and more shit will come your way... Isnt that what's already happening, to your country? The US got one of the largest debt of all countries. You get immigrants coming in like there's no tomorow, yet your smart government requires Candians a passport to travel. No offense but the US dollar is going to the crapper, signs of inflation are looming, house market is slowly dwindling down. How much again is going to the war? 150 extra billions to something that was supposed to cost 80?
So i am sorry but your country IS Bleeding and i dont think your government can do anything to stop illegal immigrants. They couldnt win the war against drugs, they wont win a war against immigrants.

For them to break in to our country, come to work and be used, they really have no rights to protect them from bad people. I feel that it is time to shut the gates and get rid of all of the people here that should not be here. That includes people from every country here illegally!! There are tons of people from Austrillia, France, Germany, England, Africa, lots of the south American countries, Cuba, Jamaca and the Carribean so. it is good that we know who is hear and what they are doing, (there are enough enemies here legally) and we much watch what they are doing!!!We must find a way to take back out country from the maniacs that have forced our sweet nature, made us adapt for them, though they wouldnt do it for us. It is time we start doing nice things for ourselves, isntead of giving 25 million dollars to N Korea so they wont nuke us.. what a load of BS that is, sorry for getting off topic. It is time to clean house, take back our countries, jobs, streets, empty the prisons and send them back to the country that they are citizens of. I heard it has all started happening nation wide, it is amazing how the state governments really have no other choice since the bill failed to pass.

I dont see any fear in any of the illigals that are roaming freely on the streets .. infact theres some that just rented the house across from me .. Even the landlord that rented to them said that they were probley illigals .. so, pass a law then do nothing .. So typical ... I am truly "wared"out ~ It's a disservice to every man & woman
who ever served and fought in a real war.
A war is a matter of life , home and country weight in a balance. Where great sacarifices
are being paided by all , on the battle field and at home.. This does not compare~ nor the "war" on terror for that matter.
I got a seat-belt ticket last week ~ the officer said it was a zero tolerence war on seat belt violations ~ He did say anything about the new carpet at city hall.
As far as the post ~ it was more of a statement ~
My opinion, ~ why have a law , if you can't or won't enforce it ~
Laws make criminals ~ You want more criminals ~ make more laws
I do see great need in the addressing immigration "issues" these are people looking
for a better way of life. ~ Like your forefathers ~ wasn't easy then ~ should not be a simple matter of ingoring laws now.
I agree ~ times way over due but it need to be fair and compassionate and even handed to "all" peoples needs ~

I agree with the thread and have much much more to add ... lets just do something about it... everyone ... I am going to give you one quick scenerio .. I was recently divorced and lost my insurance,, I have cancer .. I could not see my doctors because of financial reasons,, so I decided to visit my local health department for much needed medicine and treatment... I was the first one there at 8 am when the doors opened .. I was told to fill out the form and sit down... I did that and by 12;30 pm the room was empty and I was still sitting ..no less then 200 none english speaking mexicans entered and were taken care of all needing an interpiter ... all leaving with bags of whatever they needed within 20 minutes of arriving ... I was very upset and decided to go to the desk and find out when it would be my turn... I was told by a mexican that I was not on the list,,, then they could not find the list which no mexican had to sign in the first place .... so she rudly told me to sit down and she would find out what and why,,, I politley asked why I was in first and out last, was it because i had all my legal papers and did not need an iterpitor ... i then was told "by a mexican that there was nothing they could do for me ... i cried all the way home thinking about the illegal situation and how many american citizens are waiting in line behind them because they need special treatment,, i am in the process of writing a book "non fiction" the title will be: press 2 for english ! guess what it is about.????? it gets alot worse and the future is really looking bleak for our children who are going to be denied ... have you noticed that every young mexican girl is pregnant ... that law must change if we are to survive... | |

One contractor's excuse was he couldn't find Americans willing to lay roofing shingles for $9 an hour so he hired illegals. Imagine the nerve. one of the most dangerous occupations in America. If you don't fall and break your neck, you have to worry about getting skin cancer from all that time in the sun, and some jerk off thinks you should be doing it for $400/week.
What happened to honest pay for honest work? Contractors are making a killing off this illegal labour, while housing costs have doubled and tripled in just about every major market. Where is the benefit for the working people?
I'm glad I live in Canada. I make $25/hour doing construction building all these new homes and I deserve every penny. And if I ever see an illegal, first thing I'll do is report his employer to the union and let them deal with it. I got nothing against immigrants, but if we need them to come here and work, then bring them in legally, and give them the same rights as every worker. We don't need an underclass of brown people in this country. We're a free country of free men and women and we respect our rights. | |

You See ~ I don't have a documented problem ~ and appear to be health ~ so they denie me most service. They got a program ~ a plan to follow ~
Yet a freind of mine got 100 % disability and he never went to war. ~ Some family genic thing he has ~ he must have put on one good show! ~ is all I can say, he was dealing with them for weeks.
I won't do that ~ I rather die. ~ anyway ~ things are F~~ked up here in Texas ~
and what looks like a simple problem to many ~ is not so simple here. ~ I use to live in Mexico ~ crossed the borader every day to go to work ~ I understand it's taking much long to cross the bridge anymore. ~ So I guess thats not pratical anymore.

Last week, the Senate voted to protect Sanctuary Cities and their policies to shield illegal aliens. Today, some Senators apparently are declaring the Capitol an illegal-alien sanctuary!
We have now reached this point where the immigration lawlessness that has characterized the border for 20 years, that has suffocated our Southwestern states, south Florida and hundreds of neighborhoods across the country has now moved into the federal Capitol itself -- invited by U.S. Senators!!!

Well ain't we in the US blessed that this lovely canuck doesn't want too move here. Well let's see lets start in Vancouver, was just there last june, you talk about Illegal immigration, the city is over 80% Asian, 10 % Iranian, your not gonna tell me all those folks are legal. As for our economy, actually our economy will bounce back, your forget one thing our exports all over the world that we have yet been paid for will erase the debt. Last time I was in Canuckville, I paid what 4.00 for a litre of gas, and it's what 3 litres too a gallon, LMFAO, sounds like a bargain too me, when here just yesterday I paid 2.89 a gallon...As for Ileegal Immigration we the tax paying citizens pay 250 billion a year in taxes too support Illegals that are supposedly hiding in the shadows. That's insane, and what the Illgals don't get is that we the people last june said NO too amnesty, and if canada has all the resources and the land for them I say this year all of us Americans donate one dollar from our tax returns and buy an illegal a token for a bus ride right into canada... Well ain't we in the US blessed that this lovely canuck doesn't want too move here. Well let's see lets start in Vancouver, was just there last june, you talk about Illegal immigration, the city is over 80% Asian, 10 % Iranian, your not gonna tell me all those folks are legal. As for our economy, actually our economy will bounce back, your forget one thing our exports all over the world that we have yet been paid for will erase the debt. You don’t have a clue how it works...right? US gallons versus Imperial...rings a bell? I guess not! First, a US gallon is equivalent to 3.785 litres (NOT 3!) while an Imperial one is 4.546. I think you got it now...well maybe! Imperial gallons contain more than US ones. Now for the price. You paid $4.00 a litre? Really??? Where exactly? I can only see two possibilities on that one. First, you just don’t have a single clue of what you are talking about or second, as soon as the person at the gas station saw your mug, he said to himself that you would be an easy sucker...which obviously you were for paying that much.
Now, coming back to the price per litre, considering that you paid around $3.00 per US gallon and it takes 3.785 litres per gallon, it means that your cost in litre is around $0.80 . In most major cities, the price per litres in Canada is around $1.00 per litre which means a 0.20 per litre difference or to make it easy for you, $0.05 per US gallon or $0.04 per Imperial (Canadian) ones. Hardly a bargain if you ask me.

We only hire accredited specialized workers for that type of construction and it takes years before certifications are issued.  Furthermore, all their families are in the US so I guess you will just have to keep them...lucky you. | |

Hmmm seems too add up too just about 40% so I was off a lil, as for the gas misprint, I stand corrected.. As for Imperial, well that would be because Canada is still part of the UK, we on the other hand had the b@ll's too break away completely..
