| The Meaning of Love....out of the mouth of babes. Posted: 10/11/2007 11:55:43 PM | Elementary school students were asked, "What does love mean?"
The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:
"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." Rebecca- age 8
"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth." Billy - age 4 (I like this one!!)
"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne they go out and smell each other." Karl - age 5
"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs." Chrissie - age 6
"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired." Terri - age 4
"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK." Danny - age 7
"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss" Emily - age 8
"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen." Bobby - age 7 (Wow!)
"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate," Nikka - age 6 (We need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)
"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday." Noelle - age 7
"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." Tommy - age 6 (I think we're starting to qualify for this one.)
"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore." Cindy - age 8
"My mommy loves me more than anybody . You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night." Clare - age 6
"Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken." Elaine-age 5
"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Brad Pitt." Chris - age 7
"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day." Mary Ann - age 4
"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones." Lauren - age 4 (hold that thought)
"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." (what an image) Karen - age 7
"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget." Jessica - age 8
And the final one -- Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry"
Tell me what you thought about this...

Heh, for a long time I used to browse the library used-book sales, and buy up copies of "Living, Loving, and Learning" and just give them away to people. Excellent read, and I think a wonderful insight into what we "lose" (if we chose to) growing older, and forgetting the "wonder" that is (or should be) childhood. One of my favorite authors.

I don't think you're ever too old to love someone and show kindness--but those are sure great definitions of what love is - THANKS!!!! I used to post on the refrigerator, "You have not lived a perfect day until you have done something nice to someone, and no one will ever know who did it."

| The Meaning of Love....out of the mouth of babes. Posted: 10/12/2007 7:22:22 AM | This is by far my favourite thread!!! Children, through their innocent eyes, have such a way of expressing themselves!! I almost cried myself when I read the last one!
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I'm saving it to read again!

| The Meaning of Love....out of the mouth of babes. Posted: 10/13/2007 2:37:55 AM | Kids!!! You just gotta love em!!! Reminds me of a Christmas at my Moms. My Mom asked everyone if they had one wish what would it be. My daughter, then four, said, ‘ I wish Daddy’s Dad was still alive, but I guess he is as long as somebody remembers him, right Daddy?’ There wasn’t enough Kleenex in the house that night | |

| The Meaning of Love....out of the mouth of babes. Posted: 10/13/2007 10:08:15 AM | OP...This thread is EXACTLY what these forums (and this entire site) needed!! It really made me realize how selfish I've become as I've "matured". How lost I really am...just when I think I've "found myself". It also makes me sad to think that those little guys are eventually going to lose that beautiful sentiment once they've gotten caught up in the world we've made for them. One can only hope not.
Beautiful thread....got any more?

| The Meaning of Love....out of the mouth of babes. Posted: 10/13/2007 11:03:18 AM | I had gotten this through email many years ago, and I frequently read it.
It is such a shame that as people grow up they lose so much. Children truly do understand what love really is, yet adults don't. Children see past appearances, money and act of of selflessness. They will often give without expecting in return.
Yet adults seem to think that WE are the wise ones. I often think we should pay more attention to children - we may just learn something.

| The Meaning of Love....out of the mouth of babes. Posted: 10/13/2007 1:36:23 PM | The last one...about the little boy who helped the old man cry . That reminds me of my Grandma and my ex boyfriend...Joseph. I thoughtt that I would never see him again. But there he was. They were both there for me at one of the most HURTFULL and DIFFICULT TIMES in my liife. They helped me cry. | |

| The Meaning of Love....out of the mouth of babes. Posted: 10/13/2007 2:01:05 PM | I promised myself that I would refrain from posting in the forums trenches again, but this time I will make an exception.
In fact, I'm going to pass the link along to someone else who could read this. Hopefully, it will make her day like it did mine. After reading this thread, I now know exactly how "The Grinch" felt when his heart grew three sizes. I even got all mushy with the last one...
Another good heart warmer is the film "Love Actually" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314331/. It's not just a chick-flick either (though it's not suitable for children). I'm feeling so warm and fuzzy now, that I just edited my normally sardonic comments about how humourous I find the pop art in the background scenery of the film.
