| Why are guys so obsessed with their cars? Posted: 10/21/2007 10:57:44 AM | Hi.. hope this isn't a redundant thread.... So, why is it that when a guy is working on his car, he becomes totally focused on it? Oblivious to everything else around him? Also... why do some men need a woman to tell them that she is in love with him? I thought that was a girl thing?! | |

Also, it never tells you you're wrong, you can put more money into it to make it better, and they're logical. If you want one, you pick the one you want and buy it. When you're tired of it, you can sell it and get some of your money back.

You make that sound like it's a bad thing. What's really the problem here?

| Why are guys so obsessed with their cars? Posted: 10/21/2007 11:19:04 AM | Oh, that.
It's not personal if a guy gets lost in thought with a project. Women talk it out. Men shut up and do something to think about it/take their mind off it. Once they've thought about it, it's dealt with. It's normal to leave you alone to do this sort of thing as well and don't like having the subject dragged out of them.
Also, car repair involves lots of swearing.

| Why are guys so obsessed with their cars? Posted: 10/21/2007 12:15:33 PM | Men are fixers and builders. Women are talkers.
Men are content to work on their car all day just as women are content to blab and cackle on the phone all day

| Why are guys so obsessed with their cars? Posted: 10/21/2007 1:24:05 PM | I wouldn't say I am obsessed with my car. I am just very, very, pleased with my first car and all the more so that I've managed to restore her and that she looks better than most new modern cars!
She's a Honda Civic from the lost era of the 90's by the way.
I don't care for body kids or flashy lights. That's just tacky in my opinion. I do want my car to look nice and shiny and generally a sight to behold. I like working on my car and making her look good because of the self satisfaction that you get from doing it. Seeing the before and after and the fruits of your labour. Knowing that you were/are doing something productive with your time and that it is something to be proud about.

| Why are guys so obsessed with their cars? Posted: 10/21/2007 1:40:37 PM | Being that I'm a tech at a car dealer, I feel I'm qualified to answer a question like this. I absolutely hate being disturbed when I'm in the middle of doing something on a car. What happens when your in the middle of doing something that could jepordize someones safety if you break their concetration? they forget something or lose their place. Thats just me personally. On a different note, its just annoying when you're focused on something distractions are annoying. | |

| Why are guys so obsessed with their cars? Posted: 10/21/2007 1:44:31 PM | OP: I think if you took it upon yourself to start polishing the chrome on his Camaro, he'd likely pay attention to what you were doing.
> why do some men need a woman to tell them that she is in love with him? Cause his best (male) friends are total wusses and don't want to be the ones breaking such bad news to him?

| Why are guys so obsessed with their cars? Posted: 10/21/2007 4:57:40 PM | Thanks, life..... I will have to try that, except it's a Nova (I think!)... I did tell him that I am not afraid to get greasy!!!
Thanks, guys... your insights were very helpful to me! He tried telling me pretty much the same thing and I didn't want to hear it! I know that the car is his baby and he as much admitted that to me when we met.

| Why are guys so obsessed with their cars? Posted: 10/21/2007 5:17:05 PM | Get me in my engine bay and I lose track of time totally. I spent about an hour just looking at and poking at my new carburetor.
Given a choice of doing a girlie thing or playing with a carb .......

Men are single-focus creatures, meaning they can't concentrate on anything or anyone else until they finish the one task at hand that they're focused on. If you attempt to speak to them while they're in this zone, all they hear is Charlie Brown's teacher.
Women are broader-focused, and they're usually doing twelve things at once and can also carry on a conversation while they're doing said twelve things.
It's in the wiring. | |

Yeah MAYBE that's so but it takes a month and at least two other chicks to "help"!! LOL
So why does a guy concentrate on his car? Why do women concentrate on their clothes, make up, hair, shoes, etc etc etc? Wanna see someone come unglued? Try distracing a gal mid-make up application in the morning----easier to wrestle a lion for a side of beef................................
As hard as it is for women to understand or even accept--so it would seem---guys like machines! Whether its building something or just taking care of it its the process we like and like UB said it's an action-oriented thing. It's a source of pride for us, having the ability to acquire something, being able to maintain it and being able to enjoy it as well----with no coercing or pleading! Just as women like to nurture animals or children because that's supposedly "hard wired" into them guys also have this nurturing thing about a machine. Mind you it could be a Camaro or Nova or even a MacIntosh computer but as long as it does something AND looks good doing it AND can be modified or hot rodded then what's NOT to love?
I've got a "new to me" 1997 Econoline work van that I'm sure the neighbors are thinking I'm rebuilding bit-by-bit in the driveway because I've been working on it almost daily for the whole summer. When I'm finally finished I'll have to buy another one to also "fix" it. The upside is with 324 cubic feet of cargo area think how many trips to the shoe store we could make?

2. Is this considered a bad thing? I'm not sure where you got that impression, but a lot of men want assurance in their relationship when they are happy with it.

You are correct. And women worry more. Go ahead, women can pass the "What are you thinking?" test with flying colors, and can often not understand the concept of "nothing". Some can, some can't. Sometimes, you aren't thinking about a damn thing! And if you say this, you're LYING! You have to be thinking of SOMETHING, right? No, the ability to not be able to think of anything really does exist.
For instance, I cannot talk on the phone and have an IM conversation. Patting your head and rubbing your belly is FAR easier. This is ONE reason I dislike chatting on the phone.
Our communication center of the brain got replaced with an always on sex drive. I'll keep what I have.

But yes I know what you speak of I had a coworker that I HATED working with, all it was all darn day was "look at that car its awsome" "do you know the diffrence between that jeep and that one?" | Why are guys so obsessed with their cars? Posted: 10/21/2007 8:50:20 PM | | I'm so obsessed with my car because it was passed to me by my father and it still runs great for being an 85. I also love to watch a woman's reaction to it just for fun.

| Why are guys so obsessed with their cars? Posted: 10/21/2007 10:32:41 PM | | We fix stuff...it's what we do. Cars, bikes, washing machines, computers, whatever. We like to think we can fix anything, and some of us can...or course some of us it should be illegal to sell tools to but thats another thread in itself. Personally I'll get woman involved. Toss her and old T-shirt to put on so she can be my grease rag. And any woman who wants to polish chrome or aluminum, come on by! | |
