what do you put in your kids lunches

Hi , I am looking for different ideas and just curious of what everyone puts in their childrens lunches. My daughter is not really fussy on bread, so we have been doing bags of dry cereal, cut up fruit and vegis, granola bars ect...

I don't have kids but I do make lunches ...(university student = broke)

You can make a layer salsa dip with cream/cottage cheese on the bottem, salsa in the middle, and cheddar on top, and have toasted pita pieces to dip with (just cut up the pita into little pieces and put it in the oven for 5-10 mins)

Since they probably don't have a microwave so warm food is usually out of the question unless you get a really really good thermo mug (that's big enough to stuff food in it... usually they're the japanese brand) for that I would go with last night's pasta

Pita pizza pockets... put what you would on a pizza in the pita pocket... it doesn't have to be warm cuz most pizza toppings can be cold...

Salads - put the dressing in a small container/ziplock so that the veggies don't get mushy (personally I wasn't much of a salad person when I was a kid...)put like sweet stuff in the salad - apple chucks, raisins, dried cranberries, pears, clementines... last night's chicken or little chucks of smoky ham would add some protein (as would pine nuts, almonds, cashews, soy(iron!), peanuts...)

granny smith apple slices with peanut butter honey dip (use all natural peanut/almond butter to get a more saucy viscosity)

yogurt parfaits - yogurt, granola/cereal, fruit(strawberry's a favourite), as many layers as you like (add sprinkles for more appeal...)

OK... I give my son the following:

1. An apple
2. A handful of fresh Baby Carrots
3. A handful of Cheese Curds (or other cheese)
4. Four slices of Summer Sausage
5. A handful of Cashews
6. A thick slice of Banana (or Pumpkin) Bread (made with Almond flour not Wheat)

He's a growing boy.

I'm in the same boat as jN3t. Broke university student so I make lunches every day. Most kids love those lunchable things, but it's super easy to make your own, and way cheaper, not to mention healthier. My favorite was always the cheese and crackers. But the crackers were way too buttery and the cheese and meat were processed. So I switched things around a bit. I use whole grain crackers, real cheese and locally made kolbassa. They taste almost exactly the same, and they're better for you.

Another suggestion is to ask your kid what she'd like in her lunch. Take her grocery shopping with you. My parents always used to make me crappy lunches until I started going shopping with them and had a say in what I ate. And obviously it has to be with in reason, your kid can't survive on chocolate pudding or whatever, but let her pick out items from each food group that she'd like to eat. This would be an excellent time to teach her about nutrition as well!

My oldest son used to refuse to take sandwishes, so I had to make a thermos of home-made soup every day.
But then of course, he would complain that he was bored with the same lunch every fricking day. So I sat him
down, we went over the sale flyers together (we always did this anyway, so he could help me with ideas for
the shopping list) & I asked him to give me some fresh ideas for his lunches. He didn't like peanut butter, so I
got him Nutella. Nuts are nutritious & it's made with milk chocolate so, not great but not terrible. Then he tells
me that my mother-in-law makes these way-cool pepperoni cheese-sticks (home-made) for her son. So I learned
how to make them. Easy, simple & in-expensive.

Involving the kids in making the choices, is a great help.

I would send one kid out with a lunch of broken glass and the other kid a lunch of Band-Aids.

Then I tell them to share lunch.

^^^somehow, I must have missed the humour in that comment!

OT: I used to let my kids choose, within reason, what they wanted in their lunches. Always tried for fresh, good things to eat. Letting them help you out with what to put in it works! And no, I can't say that I miss those days! lol..Fussy little guys that they were!

I see the humor, seaspot...Like on holloween when my mom would dress me up as the "black ghost" and insist that I cover houses on both sides of the street...ahhhh good times..and I dont know what was worse back then, showing up with a bag lunch or waiting in line for soggy spinach and pizza with little rat turds on them. Not like today with domino's pizza at the ready and the salad bar. Hell, one good sneeze and it would all be mine anyways..heh heh heh

^^^Somehow my friend, I knew you would see humour in that! Maybe
I need to adjust my thinkin! Then again, maybe not!

OT: Someone mentioned making your own lunchables and I think this is an awesome idea! Fresh and healthy as opposed to the pre-packaged! Another great idea is to make sandwiches and use a cookie cutter! Somehow it makes it more appealing to the little ones.

years ago a guy my sister was dating told us his mom gave him b & j sandwiches every day of his school life...fricken incredible.

as young kids ,we were embarrassed to take tacos/burritos to lunch from home,
then i saw that mexican food wednesdays was the most popular eat at school day.

so i still got my Batman lunch box, i just mixed in some good tacos days with my bolona or tuna sandwiches days, but everyone bought lunch on wednesdays.

i try to give my son some variety in his lunches... and seeing as he cant have nut product at all as there is a child in his class who is super sensitive does make it hard from time to time...

today he took
a vegemite sandwich
crackers and container of avocado dip
banana bar (like a muffin)

he always has crackers even if it is just for a im still hungry thing they are there... so i change from fresh block cheese and dips or just leave them as it is .
sandwiches - vegemite, jam, berliner meat, polish sausage with tomato sauce(ketchup) and philly cream cheese, egg and mayo, chicken and mayo.

other add ons when it is not a sandwich day
single serve meat pies or mini pies (party pies) with a slice of bread to put the filling into
single serve quiche or the minis
homemade pizza made on lavish/wraps bread
small serving of my homemade poor mans lasagna
homemade hamburger , chicken burger or fish burger
homemade chicken nuggets
Italian meatballs with a breadroll
homemade sausage rolls , twirls or parcels
sandwich size saladas with vegemite and block cheese - loves squeezing it and seeing the vegemite worms pop out...lol. or i put on philly cheese
on occasion (in winter) i have given him a small serving of a roast dinner left overs peas, corn, potatoes etc... and he likes taking a cob of corn
rice and corn cakes with a spread
popcorn
homemade muffins or loafs - for some reason the school doesnt like cakes but are ok with these two...lol.

most of the for non sandwich day stuff is mostly left overs... and most of the food you can order from the tuckshop... which is approved by education of health

my list can go on ... but so can your imagination when it comes to things like this.

First day of preschool...after going thru weeks of paperwork, getting forms filled out, epi pens, etc with the school nurse since my son has a peanut allergy... what does brain-dead dad do? I send him to school with a "soynut butter" and jelly sandwhich.

They called me at 11:30 on my cell....asking me if I made a mistake and gave him my other kid's lunch by mistake...in all honesty the stuff looks and smells just like PB.

I felt like such a loser for not telling them!!!

my kids' lunches usually consist of juice, sandwich, fruit, snack and sometimes a treat
the sandwich bread varies,
ie; this week i got vegetable pumpkin cob, thickly sliced
he loves it when i mix mayo with honey mustard to spread on the bread then green or red leaf lettuce and deli meat
his other favorite is when i use tortillas to make sandwiches

on non-sandwich days;
- chicken nuggets or strips of leftover roasted chicken with dipping sauce
-tuna salad and crackers
-perogies
etc

My kids usually get something like this:

yogurt (usually in a tube)
two fruits (apple/grapes/mandarin/sliced cantaloupe etc)
one or two veggies (red pepper strips/mini carrots/cucumbers)
cheese stick
homemade cookies or a homemade mini muffin/loaf
occasionally a treat (small bag of chips/mini chocolate bar/pudding)

I know it seems like a lot but they go to daycare after school and some of it is an after school snack as well.

For the sandwich dilemma I try to switch things up between breads/buns/mini bagels/tortilla wraps etc. Right now my kids are loving flax seed bread and because it is so dense I find they can only eat 1/2 a sandwich each. I also do crackers, ham/turkey and cheese (packed separately so they can assemble it themselves). We also do peanut butter on crackers for the one that does not have a peanut ban at school.

I am counting the days until they are old enough/responsible enough to pack their own healthy lunches. Lunch duty is the most dreaded chore on my parental responsibility list!

Doesn't sound like your kids have spent too much time throwing up........

My dreaded chore was cleaning up after they got sick.

Kids, of course, but they're not all that tasty, so I tend to prefer other stuff.
