It seems 300 pound people are the norm today in the USA. I always wondered why an overweight woman can be called a BBW while an overweight man is just refered to as fat... or a slob? Not that I'm overweight mind you... but I was 25 years ago, and I thought this topic would spark interest. | |

Guys go more on what they see for themselves I think and women go by what they hear from others. For some reason they always need to be reassured of things. I've notice in past experiences on this site any matter dealing with weight gets deleted. Just the subject itself seems to get people mad for some reason. Even when its not being hateful and is just a serious honest question. | |

Then one day I hit the BIG 30. One day in the office I heard myself being refered to as ... you know... the fat guy. Fat? Me? Well that night I took a good look at myself in the mirror and decided I really didn't like what I saw. How could I expect a "babe" to want me in my condition. Within 6 months I lost the excess baggage and have been happier with myself ever since. What about those who cant or wont? | |

What gets me ( and maybe this should be its own topic ) when a lady says in her profile she is looking for a good kind man and where have they all gone, but when you reply and you are overweight they will say no thankyou.

It's the same here in Canada, but moving on from that....
I always wondered why an overweight woman can be called a BBW while an overweight man is just refered to as fat... or a slob?
Who calls fat women BBW's? First, if I walk down the street and some 16 year old punk throws an insult at me he sure doesn't call me a "BBW pig", he'll call me a "fat pig". Second, it's mainly a marketing tool. What woman wants to go shopping and shop in the "Fat" section, when they can shop in the "Bbw", section? Third, why can a woman not be fat, and beautiful? Why do people feel the need to put down someone simply because they are fat? Yes, if someone is fat, they are fat. But the word fat holds a negative tone with it. It's thrown around generally to make someone feel bad about themselves, and we all know that women are more sensitive about their weight than men...so why do you feel it's necessary to further put someone down? I couldn't care less if someone calls me fat, bbw, large, whatever, because I'm not defined by a term. To each their own. But why must some people go out of their way to purposely want to make someone feel bad about themselves? I don't get it. Btw, "fat men" have a term too, it's BHM...or Big Handsome Men. | |

As for me, I am fat, and I'm ok with it. I'm not proud of my fatness, but I am happy that I can have sex with someone and not feel conscious about my body; something which is rarely achieved even amongst thin women.
I must be living in a fantasy world because noone even at school has openly made fun of my size, well, I'm not going to complain.
Can we stop assuming that thin=attractive and fat=ugly, it starts becoming tirering :)
As for men, they can call themselves BHM but anyway, who cares about labels! | |

Posted: 11/29/2007 5:43:42 AM | Well, it's just a fact of life. Men are visually and egotistically stimulated. Woman are not so visual, but more intelectually stimulated. I am definitely not skinny, nor huge, either.....but I write that in my profile and purposely do not put a full body pic on my profile because it is the BEST way to filter out the shallow men! EVERY man I have met in person has said that I look way better than my pictures. I guess what I'm saying is if you put pics up that arent your best then they will be pleasantly surprised when u meet. Yes, you will get less hits on your profile and less emails, but who wants to waste time with someone that only cares if you butt is small enuf to be seen with in public, or just wants a trophy? Life is too short, and trust me....there's a ton of men that love will love your body the way it is!  | |

First of all if your not fat, why does it bother you so much? 2nd I don't think in right now anyone really says anything about someone being fat or not. They tell it through their eyes and judge you with their friends and that's that. Woman have always been known to like a man through conversation/connection and a man will always like a woman by the way they look first before they are open to talk to you. My pic on POF is just a good pic. I am a Big Beautiful Woman and if you see my profile, I say I'm fat but what do I still get e-mailing me.... people that are athletic and looking for the same thing. And I know this cause they post it on their profile. lol Its hilarious. Anyway, BBW and BHM are all fat and I personally don't give two flying sh*** if someone calls me fat or BBW. Its not really insulting cause to me they're pointing out the truth and I just call it out to them that they are stupid. "Oh I'm fat???! No sh** Sherlock. Where were you all my life to point that out to me. Like I haven't looked in the miror since I was 5. Maybe I came out of my mom fat!!! Just like all the other stupid titles we put on things, it's so we don't feel bad...it's the everyone is a winner attitude. Does being fat make you a bad person, NO! But it doesn't make you beautiful either. The CDC says that less than 10% of the obese people in America are 'fat' for medical reasons. The rest are a lifestyle choice. Being overweight is very unhealthy. It has been linked to many illnesses and soon will be the #1 killer in America. This is a huge strain on the medical system. Causing everyone to pay more in insurance. The average American needs to wake up and see that being out of shape and over weight is just as bad as smoking. We no long see smoking as 'cool' and 'sexy'....we shouldn't view being obese as OK. Obese is 30% of your Body Mass being fat. An amazing 64% of Americans are now obese!!!! | |

I don't like to be argumentative on here...however.
It sort of irks me when people compare obesity with something like smoking, or alcohol dependency. Neither of those things is needed to sustain life...food is. It's not quite the same thing as quitting smoking or drinking, food is something we *cannot* avoid in day to day life.
Taking into consideration genetics (that would be what makes the woman who sits at the desk beside my office able to eat crap day in day out and yet stay teensy thin, not ever exercising, or lifting a finger and me who works out with a personal trainer4-5 times a week unable to even *look* at a cookie or something equally as bad, as though my body absorbs fat & sugar by osmosis), difference in metabolisms etc etc, unless you have experienced being overweight and the sheer work that goes into it, the flippant commentary on how anyone overweight should just go and lose that weight, as in now, is incredibly unrealistic, and will be considered by some to be just a bit harsh.
I grant you, there are huge changes that need to be made to the way that we eat, the processed, instant foods really should be what we eat the least, the fresh & solid basic foods be what we eat more of and seeing as we're no longer out tilling the fields but sitting at desks in lieu of work, we need to become more active as a society.
But until you've actually been overweight and worked to lose said weight (I've lost to date 140 lbs - I know what I'm talking about)...well, just sit back and thank your genetics for that fantastic metabolism you've been blessed with, you have no idea the work it takes to lose and then keep off any weight you lose when your body tends towards being overweight.
It ain't as easy as it seems. Smoking is socially unacceptable...eating dinner will never be in that category will it? | |

God gave you a perfect body and when you were born you were born beautiful. You pay the price for not taking care of your body, and how you feel does not change things, go to the hospitals today and see how many people are suffering because they are FAT, No matter how you feel, it will get you some time or another. People that are FAT deserve to be called FAT because it is considered a week personality. A person that does not control there body that God gave them does not deserve respect. Your giving a bad example to our children making it okay to be FAT when it is not okay. So in order to teach the world that FAT is not okay there has to be a penalty. And the penalty is what you’re getting that you have to protect all the time. (RESPECT) You have the freedom of choice to be what you want to be. Instead of teaching our young ones that FAT is not good your making it okay because you are FAT, if people insult people that are fat then that was the way it was intended to be, you can be the best person in the world if you want and feel great being fat but you will never be respected because FAT means you are not in control of yourself. Life is made to generate business and life is controlling you, pushing you to spend money on junk food and destroy your body to profit others, like selling junk food, making money on medication. Everything in the world is designed to take your money and your life, so show life who is the boss of you and show life who is in control of you. You won’t win because people who are FAT have nothing going for them by society. No matter what you say, you cannot change the world and how things are. Everything in life is there for a reason and shallow people were put in this life for a reason. What you have to do is take care of yourself and do something about it, be your own boss of your life. Lose the freak in weight and then come back here and tell us you rather be FAT again instead of thin/average/normal. You’re just lucky if people label FAT people BBW. To me BBW is a polite word of saying FAT. And if you’re wondering who the F**k I am to say these thing, I’m a survivor of FAT myself, and I showed life whose boss of there own body.
If I was still 425 pound I would have died 6 years ago. No matter what I say people will never change, but I don’t give a sh*t, I been there and people who say FAT is okay, those are the people that are part of the life that is controlling your life, So show life who’s boss of your self. Don’t let these people tell you its okay, they are the shallow ones, they are not in control of there life. It’s not too late to change your status, your not disable, you still have hope, its just weight and you have the power to change your life.

First of all this whole post made my husband and I laugh. Ok. Second, you feel that being fat is a punishment for not taking care of ones self, so are people with Cancer cursed too? Are they bad people and this is Gods way of saying "fu(k you"? And how about birth defects? You claim that people are born perfect, so a baby born with a heart defect or born with aids, or born with an extra limb, or born with cleft pallate, is this also Gods way of saying "Fu(k you" before they were even born? While you are entitled to feel how you do about Fat people, your argument for why you feel that way is very weak.
You say you are a "former fatty", so than you probably know how it feels to be called fat. You probably know how it feels when you get turned down for a promotion because you are fat, or treated poorly or laughed at because you are fat. So my question is this: Having lived through that and know how that feels and what it does to a person, why would you even think of coming here, posting what you did and basically saying fat people are shit, having been on the receiving end of it all?
I'm guessing you were burned horribly when you were fat and still harbor all that anger and this is your way of feeling validated now that you are no longer fat. Really bad way to go about it, but again, I suppose that's your choice. I don't care what a person calls me, call me fat, call me a bbw, whatever, you or no one else defines who I am as a human being by a label. The one thing I do not stand for tho is the following.
No matter how you feel, it will get you some time or another. People that are FAT deserve to be called FAT because it is considered a week personality.

YOU and NO ONE ELSE has the right to tell a fell human being that they are weak and deserved to be put down. but I would add that, although people are not all perfect.... There are some fat people who order double cheese burgers, extra large fries, extra everything, and a diet coke...
Who's responsibility is it, when we're forced to pay for peoples lack of responsibility for their own health??
Sorry, but when a man, or a woman, who is obviously overweight walk into an 'all you can eat buffet' sits down and starts looking over the buffet line.... It makes me wonder, what are they thinking??
Some people are lazy, have been taught that food can be a constant "comfort" for lifes problems... but to make excuses for that all the time...its just sad.
Some people should suck it up, and realize its not all a "genetic" problem, or a 'hormone imbalance' problem... or any other excuse ... Problem. Stop placing blame on everything else .... Especially when its obviously a "lazy attitude, and a hand to mouth" problem..... | |
