What can you do to help soothe yourself when you get a panic attack?
I get these from time to time, and not always during a time of stress.
It can be very embarassing in public, because my eyes move back and forth,
my hands shake, and my voice breaks up.

I used to have them frequently - yuck. Now, mainly just before I fall to sleep. My entire body feels like it is snapping. To the OP - fear of fear is work when it comes to panic attacks. The more you let yourself get worked up, the more you will experience panic. Deep breathing is a good strategy and just letting the fear flow through you.

I still struggle with the night panic attacks because once I start falling asleep I don't have a lot of control over things.

I tend to get them when falling asleep too, I can hear my heart pounding and feel it and its just too quiet. I find if I get up and walk around, maybe have a cup of hot tea, talk to a friend online, anything to break the nervous energy, it helps. Good luck- i know its not fun.

That reminds me, the amino acid l-theanine is used for anxiety, and at least in Japan they put it in many food items like chewing gum... It seems to be available only as a supplement here in the states.

Write to me and I'll send you info on a technique a therapist taught me. I will sound goofy, but it works. Oh, and it's free.

If your attacks are infrequent, then consider either clonazapam or adavan for immediate relief...ask your doctor for this. Take it immediately before or during an attack and you will wonder why you didn't try it before! Note: it can be habit forming as with most medications of this type.

Panic attacks can be caused by an imbalance in your diet amongst other reasons. Usually this is enough to keep your body on the edge until some sort of stress, drop in blood sugar or other event pushes you over the edge and the only way for your body to cope with it is to attempt shutting down through a panic attack. It's an overload on your nervous system.

Medications only mask it but won't cure it. Trust me, I suffered from panic attacks daily (and sometimes several a day) for years, I've been prescribed just about every drug under the sun designed for panic attacks (and many which aren't), gone through slews of medical exams and experiments trying to pinpoint the problem. It too a naturopath doc to notice that my blood sugar was all over the place but not enough to sound the bells of being diabetic and she has mentioned that she sees it every time someone comes in suffering from panic attacks.

It's been almost 6 years with no panic attacks, no racing heart or anxiety... try looking outside the box. :)

Oh... btw, I did find it helpful to take Bach Flower Remedy when I felt a panic attack coming on - didn't take it away but did lesson the severity of it. You can get it at most health food stores, a few drops on the tongue.

Remember that you are not alone. All kinds of people out in public are in a panic and some are better at hiding it than others. I used to be pretty up tight in public especially after a disasterous high school life. The best thing I learned is to JUST focus on my emmidiate area around me, as if I am in a 10 foot round bubble. Blur out everything beyond that. A few deep breaths can help too. Often in a panic attack, the first thing that people do is start breathing short or shallow. A few deep breaths seem to help set things in the right direction again. It doesn't need to be anything crazy or obvious..just a few controlled movements.

Everyone is different but I think some solutions are universal. At the very least, the breathing should help.

If you find that you need to see a doctor, be wary of the ones who would rather push pills than talk about solutions.

Various books I have read say avoid cigarettes, coffee, other caffeinated beverages, medications that contain stimulants, such as diet pills and non-drowsy cold medications and that hyperventilation in some people can bring a panic attack on. I noticed this a few years ago when I was trying to be real quiet when a cougar was near my car and thinking if I was real still he wouldnt see me, but while remaining still of forgot to breath and soon felt a panic attack coming on. Once I breathed and then sat in the car and closed my mind and relaxed I was ok. ~Beth~

I get them from time to time, and it is scary indeed. It comes from an overactive mind and imagination. I'd like to say alcohol helps, but its effects are short-lived. Pop a couple Valerian root tablets (a natural herb), listen to some relaxing music, cut out all sweets and caffeine and turn off the TV, especially news and edgy dramatic series like CSI and Law & Order; their stories are usually quite horrific and show the worst in human nature, which are sure to make you feel edgy even when there is no threat. We're overstimulated by entertainment.

breathe slowly and gently
Posted: 10/30/2009 7:51:42 PM
Panic attacks are usually caused by overbreathing of oxygen, which upsets the acid/base balance of the body.

Breath as slowly as possible, down to nothingless.

Practice holding your breath.
Take a 2 minute break of very slow relaxed breathing, then do it again, at least three times in succession.

Breathe all the air out of your lungs, then expand your lungs, with all the air still out of them.
As your chest expands, let your diaphram go inward.
When you can't hold your breath any longer, then breathe slowly and gently.

Be calm, and relaxed.

Try to breathe as little as possible.

Hello,
I saw our post and wanted to suggest you see a clinical hypnotherapist. I am one myself and have found the attacks are a result of something else that may be deep seated. Like phobia is a fear of a fear not the fear itself. Hypnosis can't hurt and all we use is works. Either way I appreciate your honesty and good success.

One thing that I noticed that helps is eating a lot of greens. Kale is the best. Raw [on the side with some type of dressing] do it regularyl and exercising regularly helps!!

Some panic attacks can be shortened quickly by inhaling pure essential oil of geranium ( not like moms flowers). Takes about 3-10 minutes of inhaling depending on severity.

It works on the adrenal cortex of the brain slowing heart rate.

I keep a bottle and douse my neck and shoulders so I get a continuous whiff.
You can mix it with lemon or lime oil to give it a better or less feminine fragrance.

Must be true essential oils, not oil blended with perfumes or alcohol.

Get plenty of minerals and essential fatty acids in your diet. Helps most people.

I think some of us get them at one time or another.
My hands sweat and shake.

Booze and sugar can trigger them..keeping that blood sugar balanced is important.

Crowds or night time attacks seem to be the worst for most people.

Good luck, everything doesn't work for everyone, but I had them starting around childhood.

Fear triggers anxiety, anxiety triggers attacks. Some are more prone to it than others and it often runs in families. The symptoms (sweating, shaking, heart racing) then triggers more fear.
Some people get weak and pass out, think they are having heart attacks.
Know your triggers and do something about it before getting in that situation.

I can't have more than one or beers once in a blue moon, because the next day i probably will have one.

Eating processed sugar, breads..getting in big crowds alone.

I certainly suggest the essential oils to start with, as they are very safe and you just inhale them. Made from plants.

Find YOUR triggers.

My grandfather and uncle had them sometimes. But led very successful and long happy lives. Good luck.
