I had trouble with those many years ago. You have to do alot and keep it up....I carry out my trash every evening, keep dishes washed, my flour and sugar stay in the ice box, cake mixes and everything like that stays in plastic...I also got this stuff called combat- roach killing gel..and I put it all over the place. It looks nasty..but..the bugs crawl over it and they carry that to the others on their feet..and it kills them. It's expensive from walmart..but I didn't care. You can't leave food out at all, they love newspapers, paper sacks, cardboard...so you have to try and take their sources away. Good luck.........

If the infestation is that bad, call a exterminator and have the house treated very well. Generally they have treatment options that are above what just the average homeowner is willing to do on their own. I would not do a contract, just a one time treatment.

Focus on things like taking out the trash, cleaning everything well, and just living in a very clean home. Roaches can occur anywhere, but they are most common in either older or dirty homes.

But some roach baits and keep them scattered throughout the home as well.

My grandmother used to put the detergent Borox (sp?) behind all the kitchen applianaces and that seemed to help. I know it kills the hell out of fleas as I treated my carpet with it a few years ago.

You can't really get rid of roaches.
Same with ants.
They were there millions of years before you, and will be there millions of years after you're gone.
Exterminators and their poisons may provide temporary relief, but no solution.
You can control them with impeccable hygiene and maybe a few cats......
Or you can move to a colder climate where there aren't that many bugs.

OP,

I just responded to your post about your dog having seizures.
By any chance was your dog in the house when you were spraying for
roaches?
Did your dog get near the spray? I think you better get your dog to the vet.
She may have gotten into toxic bug spray.

The same principles that has allowed roaches to exist for many years can be used against them. Any species can get out of hand if you feed them and take away their predators.

Believe it or not, an impeccably clean house with a garbage pail, means the roaches have plenty of food and no predators and they can hide where even the best commercial extermination products might not be able to reach them.

I have no roaches and that is owing to two basic things - I put everything that is garbage into plastic zip bags before tossing it away and I don't kill spiders. The roaches can smell and find garbage and thrive with just a tiny bit of food in a garbage pail overnight. Even if the pail is outside the house, they will go there to eat and then come back in the house where it is warmer (or cooler according to the season).

The spiders can crawl into any place the roaches can and they are very good at killing them. Aside from the dangerous spiders that can be recognized easily enough, or the ones that spin webs all over the ceiling, there are plenty that hide in the same places that a roach might hide and the spiders are great at killing the new roach babies as soon as they start crawling around.

I have spent tons on trying different things and the plastic zip bags bought in bulk are far cheaper than expensive sprays and professional treatments. I discovered this when I began to have pet birds who could not tolerate any poisons at all in the environment.

Ya have to like spiders. They never make a sound and most of them are harmless to humans. If they get out of hand and there are not anymore roaches to eat, they will eat each other and it doesn't take a lot of them to keep things under control.

Natural things like that work great. Another example is mosquitoes. You can spend a fortune trying to control mosquitoes on your patio but put up a couple of bat houses and one bat can eat a half pound of mosquitoes every day.

Get a cat.

IF you have a house (not an apartment) you can control the roaches....maybe even get to the point where you won't see any for long periods of time. They can eat almost anything...from the glue off of wallpaper and up!

Removing the baseboards from around the rooms and sealing the crack with a flexible polymer (like silicone gel) can help, especially if you put roach powder in there first! By sealing them into the walls reduces their territory....so, they have less chance to get food from crumbs or things like that. If you have a pet, go to a feeding schedual, and clean the bowl after feeding. Leave nothing for them to eat.

Another possibility is...believe it or not...add more insects. There is a certain kind (assassin beetles) that will hunt down and eat roaches in their home territory. then, they go after each other.

Make sure the grounds around your home are kept tidy...no leaves and such against the outside walls...no stacks of lumber , firewood, or such beside the walls. Dig down about a foot, and run a strip of tar around it, up about a foot above ground too...then fill it in...keeps them out, and reduces entry.

Usually most people can battle them to a standstill...but never will you win....

Go to the local pharmacy and buy a bottle of boric acid. It's cheap. Keep away from pets and children. Pour it in vast amounts in areas where you see the big guys. They'll walk through it and ingest it -- that's what kills them. Also go around your home and seal all entry points like holes in the walls where the plumbing fixtures come into the house. I never saw another roach after my guy went around with a caulking gun when I lived in an apartment that problem years ago. If they're sewer roaches close off the drains when not in use with the stoppers as well. The problem with roaches is that if you live in an apartment complex or residential area that building is close they will move next door while the "bombing" is going on and move right back in when it's over. Keep ALL food in sealed containers that's in the cupboards. Anything that's typically in a bag or cardboard box needs to be sealed in airtight containers to keep the little buggers out. That means flour, sugar, etc. Good luck.

Boric Acid works great, suggest you put some behind the fridge and under the stove. You may want put some on some entry points. You won't catch them all that way, to catch the rest get a small jar (save the lid) put in some food and tape piece of paper towel at the side of the jar so the roaches can climb into it. Put some food, not like bread with little bit of peanut butter or candy. Now at the near the top of the inside of the jar put some vaseline, make sure to cover entire diameter. This way they will climb into the jar going after the food but they can't get out. Now you want to get rid of them, put on the lid with the food and put it in the freeze overnight and then the food and roaches in the garbage.
This really works I haven't seen roaches in 6 months.

BG-You're right-a roach is a bug. Once I learned that roach eggs can be carried in the glue in paper bags(grocery) I converted to plastic or put the paper outside in the recycling bin right away. That, and having a cat has eliminated any roach concerns.

If you live someplace warm you can lose a few geckos, they will eat the roaches and they are cute too… just don’t let them sell you insurance.

Sand and alcohol. The alcohol will make them drunk and they will throw rocks at each other and kill each other off. The last one will die of a broken heart.

Otherwise, use boric acid. I have rental property and sometimes need to treat a residence for roaches. Here's how it works... It's not really a toxic poison. It kills them by causing them to dehydrate. Roaches feed by sending one out to gorge on food, then he comes back and they all get in a circle and wait for him to barf. Then they all dive in and enjoy the fresh meal of boric acid which they love. In a few days you will see dead adult roaches everywhere. But you will need to put out more boric acid for the newly hatched babies. In about a month they will all be dead. Boric acid is sold everywhere under a variety of names.

Long ago...
I had trouble with roaches in my log cabin.
Well, one winter I went away for a week.
Emptied the water pipes, gave my plants to a friend to "plant sit", and left the house to freeze.
(I used only wood heat.. so no choice).
Guess what?
It either killed all the roaches or they left.. don't know which.. but I had NO roach problem whatsoever after I returned.
And they never came back.
So... it's a solution!
Drastic one, but a solution none the less.
Close down the house midwinter for a week! lol

Of course, no go if you are in an apartment ... or live in southern California.

If you get in the habit of putting bleach down your sinks at night--they hate it plus that seems to be when there most active.

The very first time I ever saw a real live roach was when I was on holiday in the U.S. a few years ago. Needless to say, I was mortified. I have a fear of large bugs anyways, so that just made it worse!

According to a Health Inspector aquaintance friend of mine , roaches do excist here but they are much smaller (approx two centimetres). I've never had an encounter or any problems of infestation with them at home.

Good tips though.

Bingo.

I've never seen one in Canada but in California one apartment I was in had them. The boric acid worked like magic. Killed them all and never saw one again.

By the time you see one you already have hundreds btw. Just wait till you start finding the bodies the boric acid leaves behind.
