To me it can be any one thing that a person is good at. Everyone has atleast one ability that sets them appart. I paint canvas, ceramic and toll painting. My favorite thing is blending colours. I think I do ok (or atleast I have been told as much lol). What inspirations I have stem from a love of fantasy and reality, fact or fiction. Whats yours?

I have a passion for all types of artwork, being an artist myself, but my main weakness is fantasy/faerie art. I especially love David Delamare, Amy Brown, Jessica Galbreth, Brian Froud, and Jasmine Beckett-Griffith. I can just sit there and gaze at one of their pieces and just become totally engrossed in it. There's something so mystical and enchanting about fantasy art that gets me every time. I also get that way when I'm working on my own pieces. I'm totally oblivious to everything that goes on around me, and before I realize it, 3 or 4 hours have gone by. You can do so much with fantasy art...there's no limitations. And that's one of the things I love about it. There's no restrictions...nothing seems out of place.

So long as it's not a bunch of coat hangers all tangled up together called "Morning Passion" or a blank canvass with a single black dot in the middle named "The Dot"....I'm ok with any art.

Those two I mentioned....were in a gallery and trying to sell for thousands of dollars. Kids make the same kind of mess without even thinking...talent? Yeah right.

sounds cheesy but to me everything is art, a beautiful sunrise, wind blowing leaves in a circle. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. my favorite artists are h.r. geiger and gustav klimt. my job as a hairstylist is also an art to me.

I love fairies most of all in art because they are michevious and sweet. Fantasy art is lovely because it does vary and you are so right there are no limits with it and so much can be done with colour.
I would smack anyone trying to sell a black dot on canvas! Lmao If thats art than man I made some masterpieces while I was learning......

I agree fully. I'm into many styles and forms of urban, modern art and photography. what might be art in my eyes to you is just urban decay. art is perspective.

I agree...art can be found in everything. It doesn't matter how colorful or monochromatic, art is everywhere. I am mainly into surreal art because it bends reality, but I love any and all art. Nothing can beat, however, natural art...art that is created everyday that most people overlook. Look at the night sky, sunsets, the moon behind an old dead tree, colors that form in the sky at different times of the day.....nothing can beat that. My mom always told me that the best paintings are the ones God paints everyday....she knew what she was talking about.

One of my favorite moments in a movie was when the boy in American Beauty took his camcorder and recorded random twirling leaves in the wind for several moments.

The boy recognized the beauty of life in that moment, and we, as the viewer shared with him. That was a very moving artistic moment. To me, that was art.

I consider art anything that relates to expressing emotions, freedom of expression, and/or being passionate about something. I personally don't feel that talent is necessarily required for something to be considered art. Art, similarly to beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Creativity is a bonus.

Art is the soul of the creator projected into a form of energy. The spirit of the Artists' soul is supposed to live on in his/her work, long after he/she has gone.

I instictually think of 2-d art. Most likely because that is me forte.

My second thought is that art is anything a person creates with loving care.

I agree with joeynicdao. To me it is a way to unleash emotional conflict that I may be experiencing within me at certain times. That's when I find that I am the most creative and create some of my best work. I guess passion and emotion are a big part of my work. I don't know what it is but once I have that spark inside me again that motivates and drives me to draw and paint, I find that those are the times that I am most content with my life and self. But when I lose the inspiration, or spark again that's when I become gloomy, depressed, irritated, and just feeling lost again. It drives to question myself as far as what I've done with my life and feel lost and confused about life. But most of all I feel that art to me is way to share my inner self with anyone who'd care to admire and look at my work, and I think that artists are here on earth to help depict the true reality to present and future societies. To show the truth about issues in politics, society, or just over problems that we face in the world which are being overlooked by so many.

I think of art as intential human expression. I'm thinking that a sunset may be beautiful, but because it wasn't a human creation, it's not necessarily art. And you can certainly say that not all art is beautiful. Is this making any sense?

Anything creative that has some talent and work put into it for it to be made.

I mean I love Comic book art and cartoon art the most, yet not many would appreciate it like they would stuff done in an art gallery. Yet animation and comic art is very complex and a lot of work as well so yeah I consider it just as much a form of art as a painting in an art gallery.

Yup, snobbery does come into play concerning what is art. I worked for a puppet theatre company that focused on classic folk tales. They HATED the Muppets. To them, the muppets were crass and commercial. I was always puzzled by this narrow minded view, as Jim Henson was always on the cutting edge of his craft.... and he made millions of people happy to boot. (not a bad way to earn a living)

Same with cartoons over still life paintings. I know artists who do beautiful work, yet snub their nose at Disney animation. They don't consider Fantasia, Bambi, or many of the bold innovations that were introduced to the mass audiences through the work of Disney.

Even cartoonists argue among themselves about the art of their craft. Did Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau, really deserve one of the highest awards in the land...for a strip that just showed four static pictures of the white house?....was that art?

No matter how well something is done, there will ALWAYS be critics out there to call it crap and not art. Some would call cartoons and animation art for the masses.....fine by me, as long as they acknowledge it's artistic. A lot of work goes into the thinking and execution of a doodle meant to have meaning.

Art is very powerful because it captures emotion for all time.

A work of Greek drama is as moving today as a work by Shakespeare or Tarkovsky.

Art transcends style and times.

synthesis of thought ie: communication of experience through the senses (visual, auditory, movement/touch, taste, olfactory).... art is communication- and just because something is art, doesn't mean that it's good art.

an individual's interpretation of the value of art is aesthetics. that's where all the "my three-year-old can do this!" or "picasso rules" kinda thought comes in. That is personal value, and if recognized by the cannon (critics/media/aestheticians/historians) becomes cultural value, and thus acknowledged as 'art' even if individually you think it's crap. (the coathanger thing)

criticism isn't negative, it is just discussion. what we are doing here. tada.

so art has an open definition, it can be temporary or not even existant (conceptual art) and what we are doing here, this communicating *right here right now* is art also-

For me "Art is life".
I honestly don't know where i would be without it.

There aren't too many things in this world that feel as good than to create your own brainchild and feel passionate about its creation,or the passion, admiration, empathy and respect of someone else's.

The focus of mine is towards music, but my brother is a visual artist, and although i once tried my hand at the visual arts i am afraid it is not my calling.

I do greatly appreciate anyone involved in creative arts whatever there particular field is and i love the visual arts in particular.I love works by;Durer,Giger,Fuseli,Munsch,Da vinci,Dali and the list goes on.I particularly love the imagination of surrealist painters.

The beautiful thing about any of the arts is everyone may have different technical levels of ability, but when you create an idea of your own,it is yours and no one can take that away from you.You can't really measure what ideas are good or bad, only someones personal preferences apply to ideas.

I'm an aviation art painter. Mainly I use oil on canvass. To me, real art is that medium. From DaVinci through to Robert Taylor. All this contempory art is nonsence. It doesn't inspire thought, except that I have more artistic flair on the sole of my shoe.

Hmm theres an idea... "Shoe Soul" (play on words not typo)... now, where's that old boot?....
