| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/2/2007 8:26:06 AM | READ! JUST A TIP THAT MAY HELP SAVE YOUR LIFE!
Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation.&n bsp; Test it.
It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar or rapist won't stick around...after a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there.....This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/2/2007 9:58:42 AM | I'm forwarding this on to my daughter in law who will be alone when my son goes off to Iraq. She will need the sense of security. This is a great idea for older folks who forget where they put things (as Ash sheepishly grins). I say: keep the thread going... we need ideas from everyone that others may not have thought of about all kinds of subjects, including security. | |

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/2/2007 10:13:02 AM | What a GREAT idea that I will certainly pass along to my friends and family! However, I'll have to use my keys to gouge out the intruder's eyes because I don't have a panic button on mine (1995 car). | |

Thanks I had a good hearty laugh based on your response!

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/2/2007 10:53:12 AM | | What if your car is in a garage? Then no one in the neighborhood will know where it's coming from. | |

Maybe we should keep a spare garage door opener by your bedside, too!

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/2/2007 2:01:11 PM | The salesman used this as an added incentive when I bought my car last year. I thought it was a good idea too, ofcourse that is not what decided me to pay thousands of dollars for the car, but it is a good tip. I told my daughter and my sisters about it, something to keep in the back of your mind. Ofcourse I do not remember to put my keys on my nightstand each night.
Another good security measure is to have a dog with a mean bark. I've had one of those for the past ten years, nobody comes to close to my house. If you do not have the dog, you could always have a tape recording of one, when you hear a noise, turn on the tape recorder. And put a beware of dog sign in the window. I would think any loud noise, would let the would be robber know that someone is up and about, and he or she would not want a witness to their break-in.

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/2/2007 3:14:35 PM | Since 70% of burglaries are at homes that do not have burglar alarms, one of the ideas that has been suggested in the past is to go to Radio Shack and buy several "This house is protected by "security alarm company"". I think that they are several dollars, even the hint of a security system would be a deterrent and will dissuade burglar.
Obviously, a real system which can be had for as little as hundred dollars would be even better. Thinking of10-NET systems.
Take this advice at your own risk; I am not a security consultant. You should speak to a professional before taking my advice.

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/2/2007 9:06:32 PM | | What if you drive an old Hoopty car without an alarm on it? I guess you could make loud beeping noises with your mouth. How about a "Beware of dog" sign on your front door, even if you don't have a dog? Or "Beware of large gun"? | |

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/3/2007 8:51:10 AM | | I am also one of those who do not have a remote with my 1999 car. This is still a great idea, nevertheless. What if there were a fire? What if someone broke in? It would still be great to have your car keys handy. | |
|
| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/7/2007 3:18:59 AM | Except some places those things go off routinely, so much so that nobody notices or cares.
I'd say get out of your house right away. Pick up a weapon or even a knife from the kitchen knife rack on the way out and attack the intruder where he/she would least expect it -- coming out of your door. They will NEVER expect you there in a million years. Plus their hands will be in use holding and carrying all your goods. Now you have them at a surprise AND a disadvantage.
|
| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/7/2007 5:55:31 AM | | I like the car keys idea, but I'll still keep the shotgun there too. The car alarm may or may not make them run off. Racking the slide on a 12 gauge pump action shotgun will solve most other uninvited guest problems without ever having to actually pull a trigger. | |
|
| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/7/2007 6:08:46 AM | I have a small child so keeping guns close is a scary option for me! But the car alarm is a great idea!
I have kept a wooden baseball bat by my bed for years! Although I do know that it could be easily taken away from me! I do use it to investigate noises! Its just a sense of security for me!
I also have a big bad dog that loves my kids and I pity the fool that ever tries to mess around in her territory!

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/7/2007 7:18:38 AM | I'll add some more.
Keep your cell phone and charger beside your be at night. A charged cell phone , near by, is one of the fastest and easiest ways to get quick police response.
9.1.1....and help is already on the way.
Getting a dog, along with all the other benefits of having a pet , is another huge plus.
Get to know your neighbors, and form a community watch group together. Together you are far stronger, with all looking out for each other - and suspicious activity.
Installing an alarm system hooked up to a good central is another excellent idea. Nothing like hearing a 140 decibel siren going off to convince a criminal to choose another place, as well as a well trained team protecting you.
(In the interest of fairness, I do work in that industry....)

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/7/2007 4:43:36 PM | | Since so many of you have reported not having a car alarm, I did some thinking about this on your behalves, and although I discounted the first few ideas that came to me as I pondered, I did eventually settle on one I thought well worth passing along here and so now I will. The idea is that since you can't remotely operate your car's horn and lights by using a key fob switch, well, why not just sleep in your car then? If you were there in the driver's seat as one would normally be operating the car, it would be an easy matter to reach for the horn and light switch manually, resulting in the same kind of noise and light show as if your car did have an alarm system installed. If I save just one life it will have been too much. | |

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/8/2007 6:28:06 AM | For those without car alarms interested in additional safety I just made a post about this topic in this thread:
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts8575721.aspx
The alarm in question there works by a different principle and will detect a door or window opening even when it is not in the room. It's a motion detector, but a very different one. Nice thing is you can get up and go to the bathroom, get some milk and cookies and never have to shut it off while you do so like most motion detectors. $50.
No, I don't own stock in the company and in no way I am affiliated with them. Just sharing information.

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/8/2007 9:12:45 AM | | Make drop pits in front of all windows and doors, with a "drawbridge" for the doors. Anyone falling into the ones by the windows can be left there, doorway ones you can call the cops and have them pull the person out. Do NOT use sharpened sticks on the bottom of these pits...thats just plain mean! | |

| A GREAT SIMPLE LIFE SAVING IDEA Posted: 11/8/2007 7:10:26 PM | I'm not knocking the idea, Armand; it's clever and creative and, like some others on this forum, I'm passing it along to my daughter, aka The Kid. But where I live, car alarms are just background noise. I've never seen a New Yorker even turn to look when a car alarm goes off, unless it's to curse the car's owner for leaving the silly thing connected. Personally, I go by the theory that it's best to leave the car unlocked in the hope that our local criminals will take the time to open the door rather than smash a window.
Oh ... and I park in a garage. The best defense is a good doorman.
