I have been trying for 3 hours now to find the off switch on my computer, but someone must have removed it or made it invisible because no matter how hard I look it's not there. I've been up 22 hours now, so maybe it's that dillusional time of night but I really really need to find it.

You should be able to switch it off via software commands >>>

CTRL + ALT + Del - This should bring up the Windows task Manager
There should be a Shutdown option either as a command button or a tab option.

Can't you just go through the Shut Down procedure from the Start menu?

If its power that's worrying you, just switch it off from the mains plug after shutting down properly.

maybe as you are struggling to find the correct button(s), you need a guy to nip over and help you with the location.

it sounds as though its getting serious and your button is in need of urgent attention.

I thought it was us guys who have problems locating women's buttons?

Ah, well....

Either unplug the thing, click on start, turn off etc, or follow MSG 2.

I still wonder why Microsoft decided that you need to click 'start' to get the shutdown command....

"I've been up 22 hours now, so maybe it's that dillusional time of night "..

Have you considered that you may have only been up for 2 hours and am suffering time distortion, a side effect of "Negative hallucination" , consequently, no matter how hard you look for the button you mind tells you its not there.

I often use Negative and Positive Hallucinatory techniques with ladies, negative to remove the inches life has added to my waist and positive to add the inches God forgot to give me else where.

I have had this problem several times when the computer just refuses to turn off, despite you repeatedly trying ctrl alt del; start turn off and pressing the actual power button on the base unit any which way you can - and I am sure you tried all these too. The only solution I found which has been suggested above is to unplug it.

The first time I did wonder whether it was the computer starting to take over my life but the housework still didn't get done........

Sometimes (like on my current machine) there is a pretty button on the front of the system box BUT the machine may not always power down using this button.

There should also be a rocker switch on the back of the system box which is on/off - often out of sight and difficult to reach.......... Try that one

mine is a big silver button at the front, it has an LED behind it, just press all the buttons u can see and hold them down for a few secs

the reset button will be obvious after a few seconds

if the computer restarts when u want it to shut down, then the off button at the front should be ok, if not the off button at the power socket has a good chance of powering down the PC :)

some friends just leave their's on 24/7 for months at a time

Don't plug it out straight from the mains as that is really bad for the computer without shutting it down first. I had a power cut here not to long ago and when I went to turn the comp back on the blue screen of death appeared because some vital windows files were wiped because it didn't shut down properly so I had to format the bloody thing

I found it, was just a case of willpower in the end, whoever he is, temptation of bed finally told me to stop chatting and get some sleep. Might try the bath thing tonight though, seeing as it's bonfire time, as long as I wear rubber and chuck it in at a distance I should be fine shouldn't I?

Or you could strap as many fireworks possible to it, light and run like hell... It's the only day of the year you could get away with that I think

If there's water in the bath then that should prevent the possibility of a fire.

Pmsl, i believe i saw a joke in these very forums about something similar.. the solution was.. find the box.. put your computer in the box and send it back 'cause your too f**king stupid to own a computer.

Seriously.. read the instructions...
