Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet?
Posted: 11/5/2007 3:07:21 PM
I know you shouldn't judge people by their choice of pet,but I don't think I could
ever date someone who owns a pitbull.

So many tragedies have occured with pitbulls.Yes,I know they can be trained well,
but there must be a reason why these dogs are required to wear a muzzle.

Personally,I think pitbulls should be banned.

I have met men with pitbulls as pets, and it's a turn off for me.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

Would you ever date someone who owns a pitbull?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would date someone with a pitbull, but that's all. If the relationship progressed, he would have to get rid of it, because I have 2 Siamese cats that I love, and could never part with.

I dont see why not, theres always going to be a "Bad version" to everyone and everything, just becuz those type of dogs have a bad reputation doesn't mean this one is a bad dog. Ask to guy about his dog. It wouldn't stop me, and banning them i think that's a bit unfair.

^^^^ Yeah.....me too. Dogs can sense fear, so I would be afraid that it would know that and tear me to bits.

You girls crack me up. When I was young it was dobermans that had a bad name. Before that it was German Shepards. After the Dobies had their spot light moment came Pits, then Rots, and Chows.

I had a Pit along time ago when they were concidered the mean dogs on the block and I couldn't have asked for a better dog. My Chow Lab mix died last year and he couldn't hold a candle to what my Pit was as far as intelligance, or loveabillity (don't know if thats a word but I like it) I had a woman stay at my house while I ran to the gas station and asked when I got back if he was a Pit. I replied Yes and she said why did you leave me with a Pit Bull? I asked what happened while I was gone, and she said he put his head on her leg and she petted him.

A dog is a dog is a dog, if you show them what is expected of them and make them feel loved, they will always be good dogs. It is when you raise them to be aggressive is when they get mean,,,,,,,, any dog. Hell the little ankle biters are the one's that seem to always have something to prove.

I have 2 Siamese cats that I love, and could never part with.

I have always had cats and the meanest ones I ever owned were Siamese. A friend, when I was a teen, had one and I was the only guy that could touch him. He would tear into any other guy. It was very comical to have other friends see me petting him and then they would try to and get nailed

Myself I would never ask any one to give up a pet, it would be veeeeeeeerrry selfish because pets are part of your family

Some of the nicest people I've met have been pitbulls.
I disagree with the statement "personally I think (insert any breed of dog here) should be banned."

Certain breeds are more prone to be exploited for less than humane purposes but that doesn't justify doing away with all dogs of that breed.

I would date someone who owns a pitbull or any other breed of dog, unless the way the animals were treated spoke poorly of the person's personality.

Suggestion. Don't judge a person by the type of pet they own any more than what they drive. Take time to know the person

Oh really now? That is a myth. I have one on my lap purring right now, and the other is at my feet. We all love each other. I kiss them constantly. Meow

It depends on how well trained the dog was and its temperament. If the dog is well trained and gentle I have no problem with dating a guy who has a pitbull. I love dogs and would like to meet a man who also loves dogs.

I had a friend who had a Doberman, and she was a gentle, sweet dog. Commonly, Dobies are known for their fierceness. However, after meeting "Yutta", I realized that it wasn't the breed of the dog so much as how the dog was trained. I preferred to play with Yutta rather than another friend's hyper Yorkie when I was at a party. Yutta sat sweetly by my side as I stroked her back. I enjoyed having her with me. So, if the guy and his dog are both sweet and gentle, I would love them to pieces.

Um.........Tell me that you are not comparing a Siamese cat to a Pitt bull dog? Don't believe I've ever picked up the paper or turned on the news to hear of a Siamese cat mulling a child to death. There is a reason that this breed of dod is banned in some states. Duhhhhhhhhh.

My previous vet owned 3 pitbulls, and they were absolute babies.

My 28yr nephew has a pitbull and he has 3yr old twin nieces. Those 3yr old twin girls can raid that dogs food, and that dog just gleams at the attention those girls give.

Pitbulls have gotten a bad rap BECAUSE of the owners!!! (Vick being a classic example)

When I meet a person that owns a pitbull... my 1st question would be WHY? in other words... what type of person are you?

Get to understand the HUMAN behind the pitbull 1st and foremost. That is the telltale sign.

There are loving loving loving pitbull dog owners.... but there are alot of pitbull owners that I question the values/morals of the HUMAN owners.

In other words... I'm confident if I raised a pitbull from a puppy it would be just as loving as my black lab and shihtzu... it's the owner and training.

And thanks to a MAJORITY of "bad" humans... pitbulls have gotten a bad rap.

Yes there is and it's because of people that feed into the hype of a breed of dog being bad. I have seen several breeds of dog in the news but does that mean that every one of that breed is not trustworthy? My Mom had a mut that she got from a shelter that turned on her. Does that make all shelter dogs mean dogs? The truth is that all dogs are decendants of the Wolf and all cats are decendants of the Sabre Tooth Tiger. Dogs can be trained on what is good and bad behavior. Training a cat is like beating your head against a wall. Don't get me wrong I love cats and have one but they are untrainable and if they had more size to them you would hear about cats doing the same thing and more in the news. Just because you don't see it in the news doesn't mean it doesn't happen, the only difference is that a cat claws and bites and produces small wounds but a dog has the size to rip you apart.

I let you in on a little something while I'm at it. When Max first started walking my Chow/Lab nipped at him. I let him know with Pack mentality that was bad behavior. If it would have EVER happened again, I would have put a bullet in his head. As it turned out he was extreamely protective of Max after that. He was taught right from wrong just as all the dogs I've ever had were. It's not the dog, it's the owner.

A pitbull was the best pet I ever had. She was a pound puppy that my son brought home and a part of our family for 14 years. She has the most even temper, she loved my kids and protected them. We lived out in the country and snakes were a problem. Many times she stopped a snake from getting to close to one of the kids. When my kids were toddlers we use to take them down to the river to wade and she would stay between them and the deeper water and push them back if she thought they were getting to close to the dropoff. She was a member of our family and much loved. I could not have asked for a better dog to raise my kids with. We miss her still.

And I would like to add to msg 15....

that shelter dog... nobody knows the possible history of that dog. Maybe that dog came from a horrific abusive background. That could easily account for the dog "turning" as it did.

If that pitbull was raised by it's owner as a puppy... and that owner is a truly loving loving owner, then you have a truly loving dog.

And I would also like to add... people get Alzheimers, and the disease can make them violent. Dogs also get a version of alzheimers. So don't judge a situation till you understand the situation.

PS... VICK IS SCUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well I have a friend who has raised pitbulls and just bought another puppy this summer ,, and the only thing these dogs would do to you is lick you to death..lol i think its how their raised.. i know theres no comparisons but ive known people who have had cats that were tormented and teased as they were growing up these cats became visious you cant get near them... well the same goes for anyliving thing torment it . tease it and it becomes angry... love it , treat it gently and respect it becomes a wonderful living thing. just my personal opinion.
so based on how the dog was raised no matter what kind of dog.. would be the deciding factor on weather or not id date this person

Heck yeah I would. I don't care what breed of dog it is.

if the dog is out of control and a crap head, regardless of the breed I wouldn't date them. But if the dog is well behaved and all of that, i don't care what breed it is.

Pibbles are my favorite breed anyway so it would be a plus

I would date some one with a pit bull,no problem.People talk about banning pit bulls,it is not the dogs that need to be banned they should however be more selective about who can OWN them. The dogs are NOT natural killers they are bred and raised to be killers. There is a difference.Pitbulls bred and raised by responsible caring owners do not turn into killers, they are loyal loving pets.Maybe society should start concerntrating more on the people that turn them into killers than on the animals them selves. They are animals, and they are what MAN trains them to be.How many people have seen a pitbull pup attack some one?I am a dog lover and to see people blame a dog for how it is trained is THE DUMBEST thing I have ever seen.Come on folks let's get the real BAD guy and leave the poor dogs alone.

A pit bull is still just a dog.
If it grows up socialized, it'll be just as friendly as any other breed.
The reason why they have a bad name is because they are very often not raised right, but rather bred (or inbred, which can lead to insanity) as disposable alarm systems and 'attack' dogs.
Two friends of mine have pit bulls, both rescues from the local shelter who had been abused before, and they're a little jumpy (due to past abuse), but no more 'dangerous' than any other dog.
Does that mean you should hold a kitten in front of the pits' snout or leave the pit alone with your toddler?
No, of course not, but that's not because the pit is a 'killing machine', but because that's just plain stupid.
It is so VERY unfortunate that we can't have pounds for people (such as the ones who raise pits and other dogs as alarm systems), where you get the needle if nobody comes gets you after 3 days.

Saying you wouldn't date someone with a Pit Bull is like saying you wouldn't date someone with a jack russell... They are just as likely to be vicious dogs as they are to be sweet cuddly dogs... Get to know the person first and you'll beable to tell what the dog will be like.
I have dated a few guys with Pitty's and for the most part they were sweet, gentle dogs, there was one that was a holey terror, but I should have picked that up from his owner fisrt. (the guy was a bit off his rocker, and had a short temper... these things rub off on the dogs)

I have 3 german shepherd crosses, does that mean that I'm a bad person? My dogs are very sweet and gentle, well, maybe gentle is the wrong word, but they are not agressive and would never bite a person unless they tried to hurt me or someone in my family. They think they are lap dogs eventhough the range from 70lbs to 120lbs. We've treated them like babies since they were pups and they still think they are babies so the get really excited when people come over. The reason why I say gentle is the wrong word is cause they don't know how big they are, and my 120lb guy doesn't know that 20lbs of him is in his tail which he swings around like a helicopter...

It's all in how they are raised, not their breeds, so it's not fair to say that anyone with a pit bull isn't work dating...

Heard the best comment on a program the other day;

"want a better dog, be a better human."

Yes, I would date someone who owned a pitbull so long as they treated the dog right and were good to it. Problems with pitbulls, like any other breed, start and finish with the owner.

It's sad that you have this kind of opinion on pit bulls. When they come from a good breeding line and are properly trained, they make the most awesome family pets.

And since when should ANY breed of dog be banned. It's bad people, not bad breeds. I have seen more children injured from being bit by chihuahuas, c@cker spaniels, pomeranians, even labs, than from pit bulls, GSD or rotties.

Who should be banned besides the owners? The breeders! Nearly every breeder out there is a BYB, resulting in bad genes and possibly a bad dog. Don't blame the dog though.

<div class='quote'>Oh really now? That is a myth not a myth - siamese are notorius for only loving their owners. They are very particular.

BTW - pit bulls are a mixes of the bull and terrier breeds.
