Hi folks
Had a blast at PoF party at Crazy Horse this past weekend...
But it got me to thinking about smaller, quieter gatherings, or even just putting out info about the places YOU go and the things YOU do that might be of interest to other PoF folk in central and north central Michigan...small clubs, jam sessions, coffeehouses, small concerts, snowmobile/motorcycle/horseback/antique tractor( no lie! they have one at Chippewa Lake!) poker runs, discussion groups, small concerts, "benefit" gatherings even.
So how about it folks here in the middle of the Manitou's handprint?
I'm going to try and compile a list of a few things in my neck of the woods and post it soon...
in fact I will kick it off with this
Regular Jam sessions at Great Northern Music hall on Edgerton in Howard City
Friday nights from about 6 pm to 11ish... groups on main stage change every half hour, also many other jams going on in the rooms downstairs.
Basically this is an acoustic instruments, and the emphasis is on classic country, folk, bluegrass and gospel, but we've had bagpipers and classic rockers. The building is a big old church, NONSMOKING FAMILY FRIENDLY atmosphere. All levels of musician welcome If you aren't a musician, bring your ears and your voice...cost is $4 for adults.

Jam Session first and 3rd Thursdays at the Checkerboard Diner in beautiful downtown Mecosta, 7 to 9:30, recommend that you get there before the music starts if you want to order food... pretty much the same deal as above mentioned jam session only smaller. This is a free event, except for food and drink( and that is very reasonable)
There is a bar In HC just down the street from Great Northern, Latitudes Roadhouse/Steelhead Sports Bar, and a bar just across the street from the diner in Mecosta( Loon Saloon, formerly known as the Blinker Lite) if you want to visit those establishments after the jam sessions...

I have to dig out the info but will also try to post about a gospel concert with a good bluegrass band(BlueGrass Echoes) in WhiteCloud this Saturday night( where DID I put that flier???)

As I mentioned before, the party at Crazy Horse was great but I think that maybe if a few of us folk north of M46 simply put out the word about your local events, bands. nightspots, we might be able to meet each other and HELP our local businesses, bands and entertainment venues...
Something was also mentioned in another MI thread about maybe some brunches or quieter get togethers, which would be great for the PoF folk who have problems with smoke and noise...any ideas?
And I surely don't mean to DISinclude the PoF members from south of M46,would love your ideas/input...
Come on central/northcentral folk, lets liven up the winter months!

Let me add, just in case anyone has a concern, that I am not in any way financially linked or employed with any of the places mentioned, just trying to encourage interest among us Michigan fishies about exchanging information and ideas for getting out from behind our computer screens!

As previously promised
Bluegrass Gospel concert
Methodist Church in White Cloud, 7-9 PM Sat Nov 10
I seem to remember something about refreshments post concert, and the general course of these kinds of events is a free will offering.

Come on Central/North Central MI fishies, what do YOU do in your neck of the woods? or do you just sit home behind the computer or television screens?

Especially I'm looking for folks to post info about family friendly events that are NOT in bars. Nothing against the bar scenes, but there are folks who CANNOT be around smoke and/or alcoholic beverages.

And here's another announcement...
Single? Live alone? Family lives too far away? Don't spend Thanksgiving alone...
There is going to be a Community Thanksgiving dinner at Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church( just north of School Section Lake Park in Canadian Lakes area.)
Will post time and other details as soon as I have them.

As previously mentioned, it is not my intent to promote any particular business or church, or even religion in general, just trying to help single folks round here to find places to go. If I hear about special activities, good bands, karaoke contests etc, I will certainly post them. It is not my intention to DISinclude local bars and clubs. I ain't the Church Lady LOL...

Thanks, LickenStik! Will keep that in mind!

If you are far from "home" or "family" on Thanksving, a local "support the arts and family friendly entertainment events" group is holding Thanksgiving dinner at Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church at 2 pm. This is not particularly a religious event, simply that the church has been knd enough to make their facilities available. The church is on 90th Ave just north of School Section Lake Park in the Canadian Lakes area.

The Friday Night Jam Session now has a webpage;
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=190877389&blogID=333511805

Again I want to make it crystal clear that I am in no way getting any kind of personal gain from publicizing this activity.
My only intent is to provide information about a regular, lowcost, nonalcoholic, nonsmoking, pretty much G rated entertainment( or learning) experience to central Michigan. You can bring your kids or your granny without fear of embarrassment. And yes there ARE single people there too.

And again I encourage other central/northcentral MI fishies to post info about entertainment and cultural events in your community or neighborhood. Especially low cost "family" environments for our members with alcohol or tobacco smoke issues. Of course information about entertainment in bar/club environments is also welcome...especially if it's places where single women could go without being seen as looking to be "picked up"!
Hope everyone's winter is going well!

It's my understanding that there WILL be a jam session at the diner in Mecosta this Thursday, when there is a 5th Thursday in the month there will be a jam session.
Also, I see a sign outside the Eagles hall in Lake( or Lake Station for those historic sticklers) indicating a "jamboree" this Saturday from 6 to 10, open to the public. I know little else about this but if I can slide out a little early from the function I have to go to in Clare, I may stop in and see whether this is a regularly recurring event.
Again, other PoF members from central/northcentral MI, I started this thread to encourage sharing of information about local fun events...

Well stopping in to the "jamboree" may have paid off on several levels but the one that's germane to THIS thread;
Give me a day or 2 to pull together and verify the info...but musicians/music lovers over northeast of me are putting together kind of a "circuit" of jamborees/jam sessions that will be as follows; Ist Saturday at Eagles Aerie hall in Lake( right on US10, between Clare/Farwell and Evart), 2nd Saturday at Geneva Twp Hall in North Bradley (Coleman area) 3rd Saturday at I.O.OF hall in Clare, 4th Saturday,Farwell VFW hall. These will be evening events from 6-10 PM. From personal attendance at the one in Lake last night, there IS a dance floor, there was a limited menu of food/snacks and adult beverages WERE available. I am not sure what the other jamborees will have available. The initial impression I'm getting about the ones in N.Bradley is that it's coffee and punch only. Not clear about smoking/nonsmoking. the limited info I have at the moment seems to indicate that there is a dance floor at the Farwell event. They also stipulate "acoustic instuments only".
Understand that primarly these events are predominantly older country music.
I will put up more details as I get the information more pulled together. I simply wanted to put out some advance alert.
Also check other threads for info about a party in Midland this coming Friday, and a possible summer camping/canoeing event on the Rifle River.
