A three-metre tidal surge is predicted to surge down the English Channel in the next 12 hours posing an "extreme danger to life and property", experts have warned.
Coupled with storms and high tides, the wave could leave swathes of the east coast under water, according to the Environment Agency.
A combination of gale force winds off the coast of Scotland and high tides are expected to cause floods which could breach sea defences.
The surge is expected to hit the Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex coastline from early tomorrow morning.
About 8,000 properties in Great Yarmouth and 1,800 in Lowestoft could be at risk.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called a special COBRA Cabinet Office meeting to coordinate an emergency response.
In a statement to the Commons tonight, Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said police were on standby in the areas most likely to be affected to evacuate homes if necessary.
"A tidal surge of up to three metres is making its way down the North Sea which could coincide with peak high-tides," he said.
Spotted it on news and on some other forums.....

Posted: 11/8/2007 12:48:22 PM | Fingers crossed for everyone in these areas, don't forget to keep a torch and a radio with batteries upstairs, I know it sounds obvious but we were flooded in 2004 and didn't have any of these things upstairs, luckily I got lifted out by a very hunky scouse fireman...
My mum has now made us all "emergancy packages" to keep upstairs!

| Floods - Anyone live in the UK near English channel ? Posted: 11/8/2007 2:45:14 PM | | I actually think it wont happen because todays political climate requires our government to try and reap some credibility back after the floodings elsewhere, earlier this year. If you watched the news you would have seen everybody sand bagging and talking about moving their furniture upstairs, which, if it does happen, should save the insurance companies a few bob and as a knock on effect , slow down our ever increasing premiums caused by false claims, all of which have a direct effect on the economy in general. So basically I don't think it will happen and just think it's a propaganda excercise designed to restore some faith in our 'powers that be'. Saying that , I'm quite prepared to wake up in the morning and have humble pie for breakfast but I'd bet a tenner I still end up having Special K. | |

| Floods - Anyone live in the UK near English channel ? Posted: 11/8/2007 3:38:21 PM | Wind speeds exceeding 50mph (80km/h) are predicted, with the storm surge expected to peak at about 0430 GMT around Immingham, near Grimsby, and then at 0700 GMT on the East Anglian coast.
There are eight severe flood warnings, 10 flood warnings and 24 flood watches nationally, covering North Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and the north Kent coast.
The severe warnings in place from Great Yarmouth down to Shingle Street, and on parts of the River Bure, River Yare and River Waveney, carry an Environment Agency alert stating: "Severe flooding is expected. There is extreme danger to life and property. Act now."
Blimey, good luck you lot!

It gives details of the different alerts and which areas they apply to and also advice on how to prepare, very helpful and definately worth a look if you live anywhere on the East coast.

| Floods - Anyone live in the UK near English channel ? Posted: 11/8/2007 7:41:30 PM | I live in Cardiff Bay which according to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7086224.stm is at risk of serious flooding!
What a load of cobblers.
It will affect the east cost, we should be A-OK here, *fingers crossed*.
I don't live on the ground floor but I do live overlooking the docks of Cardiff Bay. Not that I will be affected on the floor I live on, but I don't fancy swimming past the concierge on ground floor to get to the post office tomorrow morning lmao!!

| Floods - Anyone live in the UK near English channel ? Posted: 11/8/2007 11:48:56 PM | Yep I'm in Ipswich, on the river, next town along from felixstowe.
I also work for an electricity maintenance company and we had fore warning of this yesterday lunch time. Management were asking for more people to come in and work to cover the busy night they were expecting, not sure how the rest of the east coast has faired over night but it's quiet in Ipswich this morning. We'll see when I go over the river on my way to work.
All I can say is if it does flood in ipswich this weekend I'm glad I took out my first contents insurance policy this year....the land lady can deal with the building :P
