| When does your Christmas Tree go up?
Posted: 11/8/2007 5:40:11 PM | Was curious when people put up their christmas tree's.. In my family, the tradition is to put it up the weekend after Thanksgiving. My Aunt down in South Carolina like's to be the first in the family to get one up, so usualy its up before Thanksgiving (it may be up right now!).
Last year was my first Christmas alone, so I didn't put up a tree. This year I may, not sure yet. Its not because I'm not in the Christmas spirit or anything, but my cat just LOVES to destroy the tree. He jumps from anything right into it, or climbs up from the center. The bottom section usualy looks bare because he'll go after the bulbs and you have to try and hang them out of his reach. I love a good tree, but that damn cat just won't leave it alone. I get up in the morning and fix all the holes, collect the bulbs and put back up. When I get home from work, I go thru the same thing. Its a chore to keep my tree looking good. Every now and then he's able to topple it over.
Years ago, the vet gave me some ear medicine for the cats, they HATED it, they only had to see the bottle and would take off in the opposite direction. For one year anyway, my tree was safe by simply placing the bottle under the tree. Wish I had that stuff again!

I havent stuck to that in the last few years for different reasons but I may this year....I have already been thinking about it. I too had a cat that ripped my tree apart, it was impossible to keep her out of it...lol. She is no longer with us but now I have a dog that isnt the best...lol..so we shall see

I let my kids put the ornaments on, they enjoy hanging the ones the get every year (a tradition, that each year we each get a new ornament)

Posted: 11/8/2007 6:41:27 PM | About a week before Christmas I pull my fiber optic tree out of the box,set it on the table and plug it in...the day after Christmas I unplug it and stuff it back in the box.

You really need to get a tree up for Christmas. The holidays are always difficult because we miss those who are not with us anymore for whatever reason but Christmas is about a new beginning and opening up oneself to the belief that there is magic all around us...love.
So, get off your butt and go out and get a new tree that will be there to share all the wonderful future good memories that are coming your way!
My tree goes up Dec. 1st and stays up until the 8th of Jan.

Posted: 11/9/2007 4:17:51 AM | Christmas is my favorite time of the year.. I consider myself an expert gift giver.. Nothing ordinary, it has to be well thought out and well planned. And I do my Christmas shopping on Dec 24th... lol I don't think I have ever bought a gift in advance. My step mother use to start buying next years gifts just after Christmas when the sales were on.
Speaking of Gifts, has anyone re-gifted something? Ever get busted re-gifting? lol I got busted once by giving someone a gift I got during my house warming party that they had given me! lol We all had a good laugh at that one.
We use to play a came on Christmas when all our family use to gather on Christmas eve. Forgot what it was called, but everyone would put a gift in the center fo the room. We would all sit around it and draw numbers to see what order we went in. Then you would pick your gift, open it and you had the option of keeping it or stealing someone else's gift that has already been openned. That was so much fun! Now we all live a million miles apart so haven't played that game in some time.

Posted: 11/9/2007 6:41:01 AM | My tree was up the first week in December last year...wasnt taken down until June lol. I was pregnant with my daughter and was constantly sick...but it was a good "conversation piece" 
This year idk when I will put it up, have to find room in this tiny apartment...that house may have had mold but I miss the space!!!

Same here Sue, no one to look at it but me! Too big anyway, dunno why I even didn't let the Ex take it... don't think she wanted it.
Stuff in the house is just too displaced after the flood 18 months ago, it would be in the way.
We used to think people were nuts putting it up around Thanksgiving, I guess it's the norm now. When I was a kid, & enjoyed that sort of thing it went up around the 18th to 22nd (week before) & came down Jan 6th (After Russian Xmas). | |

Posted: 11/9/2007 7:32:50 AM | I am almost obsessive about resisting the urge to acknowledge the Christmas season until Thanksgiving, I just HATE it that the stores now start putting the stuff out and playing Christmas music in September, and I resist the urge to get out wire clippers for the people who put their lights up before Thanksgiving and leave them on after New Years. Now, that might make me sound like a scrooge, but for me it's this: the Christmas season, from Thanksgiving to New Years day in my mind, is a magical season. I love the decorations, the lights, the music, the smells of baking, the spirit of giving, but to try and extend that (especially the commercial interests) just cheapens the actual season, and runs the risk that you are more just tired of it all by the time Christmas is actually here.
I don't always get to putting my tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving, it's more just the first time after it I have the time and energy and my daughter, but I would NEVER consider doing it before then. It's funny to see, though, that my daughter has already picked up that habit of grumbling about it being too early or too late in the season for it, at the age of five, lol.

I went into the Old Sears in Downtown Provo on Sept 24th some years ago to pick up a couple of Craftsman Tools, to find a full blown Christmas display. A record at the time , now I think that's been outdone for the earliest. | |
