Does it bother you to be watched while you are cooking? It does me. (hey, this is a cooking thread....what did you think I was talking about?)

I'm not talking about something like hamburgers or hotdogs, I'm talking about nice meals for guests. I just don't like to be watched or "helped". Am I crazy, anyone else feel the same way?

How about someone else cooking in your kitchen, using your pots and pans and stuff? That kinda bothers me, too. I even prefer to do all the clean up and dish washing myself. I guess an analyst would say it is either a territorial thing or a control thing, huh?

They can watch, but I hate it when they try to take over or offer suggestions.

Yes it bothers me. I will be constantly watching them out of the corner of my eye wondering what they are thinking of what I am doing, resulting in forgetting ingredients. I get really angry when someone suggests while I am cooking, to the point I usually say "didnt realise we had a chief in the house" and tell them to do it.

Neat freak so I dislike it when people use my pots and pans, set the table anything of that nature. I have a certain way it must be done lol.

I don't like being watched, either. Whereas I am clean sometimes I am a little "undignified" in my cooking (such as using my hands where others might use utensils....stuff like that).

Also, I have every little detail planned and scheduled in my head, "help" or being made nervous by someone watching throws me off balance. Now, as for clean up....they can have at it.

It doesn't bother me so much to be watched while cooking, but I am obsessively weird about people using my "stuff" and I'm totally with you on the clean up. I'd rather do it myself. I think it really is territorial - ok, and maybe a little bit of a control thing. :)

Doesn' t bother me at all. I used to love it when my ex watched me cooking. I think that he actually found it erotic and I loved it :)
Different strokes for different folks I guess

If they want to help I tell them to clean/do dishes and I continue cooking. For that I am always grateful!

In high school I went to tech school for Culinary Arts, so being watched is like second nature. You either had a classmate watching you cook, or the intstructor.

What I love the most is cooking for my guy, if he's not watching from a short distance he's watching right on my shoulder with his chin resting on it as he holds me. Whenever the dishes need to be cleaned he always wants to help, but theres no way Im ever letting him wash, so he dries and I wash. Personally I cant really let anyone else wash, except for my best friend, she and I are the same when it comes to cooking and cleaning.

easy give your guests somethin to do while you prepare the meal if they offer to help tell them no thankyou simple isnt it?

set somethin out in another room for them to entertain themselves while youre slavin away over the stove.

or just try lettin them help no one is perfect and no one does somethin the exact same way everyone else does so loosen up a bit and let them cut the pepper the way they do it instead of freakin out over it..........orrr give them a more apporoximate time to come over for dinner like after everythin is prepared or in the oven.

I don't mind if people watch and I've even done a few informal demonstrations before. However, the rule in my kitchen is don't touch anything or turn any dials while I'm cooking or else I will chase you out with my broom, while yelling "Outta of my kitchen"!

JGCashHag--my favourite chef, who ran four Mediterranean restaurants, always used his hands and I do too. If anyone thinks it's undignfied (it's not!), I would just add a flamboyant flip of the wrist and smile.

So yes. I like to be watched and I like a chef who uses his hands.

I love to watch a women in the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, hall, stairs, etc.

what I don't care for is a lot of chatter ~ But then, there is some people I can listen to all day. ~~ It's what they say, how they say it and the voice ~ can be hevenly, can be hell.

I enjoy people watching, as long as they just watch ~ if they help, they need to keep up or go back to watching.

You can use and abuse anything I got ~ just leave my 8" butcher knife alone.~dar

Doesn't bother me to be watched, and I don't even mind too much if I get a little assist in some of the prep work... but other than that, if I'm cooking, then stay out of the way or get trampled.

I don't mind anyone using the kitchen or most of the cookware, but I do have a few things that I tell them are 'haunted' and off-limits to anyone else, and I'm the only one that does the washing up for the cast iron or percolator. Not so much territorial, but I don't want soap in the coffee and re-seasoning the iron is a major pain in the butt.

Wow, I never realized how different I am about this. I love to have others in the kitchen with me when I'm cooking. Doesn't matter whether it is family at the holidays, friends for casual dinner, or a romantic dinner for two. While cooking is fun, there is also some work involved so why not enjoy the company of others while you do it?

If they want to help, great. If they want to just watch and chat, also great. If they get to annoying with the backseat driving, I just give them a look that says, "yeah, right, do you REALLY want to take over?" and they back off. If they want to clean all the dishes, pots, and pans (or at least put them in the dishwasher) while I do the cooking, then I might have to propose to them (assuming correct gender, age, etc., otherwise I'll hire them as my maid).

I am a bit "controlling" about the spice rack, though. Nobody gets to use my homemade spice combinations without permission. Every "great" artist needs both an audience, and a few tricks up their sleeve to impress the audience. If I let just anyone play with my spices, people wouldn't revere me as a god anymore.

Okay, just kidding about the god part.

I love being entertained while I'm cooking. As long as you stay behing the yellow line noone will get hurt, and no food will be on the floor. I've been told watching me cook is like watch watching someone dance. Apparently I put on a good show, I've certainly used cooking for part of courting.

I don't mind people around me whilst cooking. I tend to grill more than be in the kitchen. A social environment, if you will. I am in the process of teaching my 10yr old daughter how to cook, so it is a special time for me to have a kitchen helper no matter where I cook.

I've taught others to cook and given cooking demos. I don't mind help, but it's directed by me. I don't like it when someone comes in and lifts a lid without asking, especially if I'm steaming and they've just let it all out.

I don't have a problem with then watching me. I do have a problem with someone coming in, in the middle of my prep work telling me I am doing it wrong..

Heck, I will toss them an apron, hand them a knife and board, Veggies. I have learned and built some really great friendships out of cooking and sharing.

{{I do have a problem with someone coming in, in the middle of my prep work telling me I am doing it wrong..}} Reply: to SS When I cook I don't mind suggestions in what people have done and tried but to just come in and control, criticize, that would be a no-no.

I know there are folks like that and it makes your eyes roll, I have a young sister like that and love her too death but sometimes I have to tell her to stfu in so many words.

to share in one's home and hearth is to love... some get, some don't...such is life.

Thanksgiving is coming up......cooking a big dinner for all the family. Everyone wants to congregate in the kitchen, don't know why but it always happens. I really don't mind because we have a great time, I just make sure I have most of the cooking done before they get here. What does drive me crazy is everyone wants to peek at the turkey or nibble on the ham before dinner time.

My cat Bella likes to watch me when I am cooking. Like she is going to start talking and tell me that I am adding too much salt or to add more onion or that it looks too spicy or bland or whatever...
