OTTAWA CARD/GAME NIGHT DECEMBER 8, 2007Page 1 of 7    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
December 8, 2007 at my place...the orginal POF drop in centre....lol

This is the 3rd big card and game night potluck. It will be like last month. with different games at each table...cards, scrabble, trivia etc. I might need some help with games...for example if you like a certain game...bring it along. Whatevery game you want to play you just grab a table and some people and away ya go.

This is a free event, Lets try to start the potluck at the same time at 5 PM...so arrive anytime after 3:30. Bring a dish to share for the potluck. The house is equiped with a lot of different soda, a bit of beer and wine etc.....we ask you bring your own to add to this or chip in for what you drink.

IMPORTANT......I AM NOT GOING TO CHASE ANYONE THIS MONTH...YOU HIT THE SIGN UP BUTTON, THEN YOU EMAIL ME. If you have you email settings blocking out females, people that are 44....or people looking for other relationship....You have blocked me. You HAVE to email me first to be able to come to this event.

Now...also important....a lot of you know where I live because of the weekly games and previous events. My place will only hold 40...we do have to cap how many come....so please for the big potluck card/game night... do not come unless you are on the guest list and have reserved your spot. I do not mean to be mean or a bitch...is simply space. And if you are on the guest list and cannot make it...let me know so the next person on the waiting list can come.

Friday night games at this point you do not have to reserve...you simply come..no potluck tho....lol

This month...starting today I am going to start checking Value Village and other thift stores for games. I am going to try to get a collection of games here at the house. I really have no games myself, just card, ski bo and yatzee.

If anyone sees games on at a good sale, would you shoot me an email. On the big game night tho...please bring any games you have until I get the collection built up.

Also ideas on this being a Christmas party...we can do it that why if you want.

Hmmmm...after all that has happened since last night, why don't we just change her username to Iokwaho'tahnetska and be done with it?

Oh, you have no idea what that word means? Guess you'll be needing the services of a Mohawk speaker then.

lol @ Klaus and Urbanlamb.......Mowhawk speaker indeed and no of slaps indeed (I'm guessing Urbanlamb had fun with us wackos after all )

Well it is near Christmas so calling it a Christmas party sounds cool - for fun why don't we say everyone has to wear something red and green in honour of the season LOL

Gift exchange could be pretty difficult with so many people - many we could draw the name of a charity and do donations for that ( yes I know POF does not sponsor any charities - they wouldn't be, it would be us - and no one is required to donate)
I would just rather see my money go to hungry and homeless people at this time of year.

Another idea is what I've seen others do. Put stuff (like tooth brushes, mitts, scarves, etc) in a shoe box for the homeless. Of course that would involve delivering them after.

BTW, why is Christmas colours green and red?

As for potluck, I'm starting my Christmas baking. :) Why wait when one can enjoy this for a couple of months!

Hi Laura, maybe green for Christmas trees and red for holly! I believe the tradition of Christmas trees came from Germany. I suppose we could google it and find out for sure.

All good ideas, have fun everyone!

According to Christian beliefs:

Red is the blood Jesus shed for your sins.
Green symbolizes the colour of life, as in the potential of everlasting life as a result of Jesus' sacrifice.

Really, most, if not all, traditions from Christmas, as well as Easter, hallowe'en, etc...stem from pagan traditions that were incorporated in the 3rd and 4th centuries, when Christianity assimilated the pagans.
In the third century, a popular pagan celebration which honored the sun god was converted to a 'new' holiday by the Church, so that the pagans would join the faith. They could keep their traditions...but those traditions were candy coated with a veil of Christian beliefs.
This holiday, (Saturnalius) by the way, was primarily celebrated by gift giving and large feasts.

So...bearing this in mind...here's a few possible origins for the colors red and green...
The druids worshipped the earth, and certain types of wood possessed different powers, some very powerful ones were evergreen, mistletoe, and holly.

The Romans would collect certain branches in the fall, and then around late December, early January, give them as gifts symbolizing good luck.

The Egyptians adored evergreens...these were used during the mummification process (in the form of strong oils and ungents), to aid the corpse in 'resurrecting'.

hope this information didn't destroy Christmas cheer for anyone...just thought you'd like to know!

I like the ideas of $$ for charity and/or supplies to be donated such as toothbrushes, etc. If anyone wants...I can coordinate a contact person at the Mission and get a list of needed items, then arrange for drop off of the goodies.

^Urban, that is interesting. I didn't know all the exact details behind it, but ya I heard a bit about what you are talking about.

I like the idea of charity too. Getting a list of needed items is a good idea, rather than getting stuff that they may not need or have too much of, etc.

As for a gift exchange; you give away something you don't need anymore, but it has to be a funny thing.

ex: ugly astray, souvenir you have no use for, ..................................... use you imagination!

I 'found' some board games but they need to be picked up in the west end. I don't have exact address yet. But it's close to Bayshore and Central Park (near Baseline and Merivale). Does anyone from the group live out thataway? And can go pick them up?

Let me know. Thanks,
Laura

WOW...one day up and already is over half full.....

So we are doing a christmas potluck then I take it is the idea of what you want to do...and do a donation basket to be given to charity for whomever wants to donate some stuff?

No costs. I was 'gifted' the board games. I'll send you an email later with the exact address. Thanks for offering to pick them up.

Hi FawnAngel,

Count me and Tony in!!

I love the idea of a Christmas Party!! But let's try to keep it simple! Perhaps everybody bring non-perishables to donate to the foodbank?

Does anyone have a Santa suit? It's been a while since I've sat on Santa's knee!! I wonder if he knows if I've been naughty or nice?

HaHa!!

Potluck: This time, I will bring a "Cool and Creamy Chocolate Fondue with lots of fresh fruit".
