| disturbing death Posted: 11/14/2007 9:59:21 PM | re: Robert Dziekanski, For those unfamiliar with the story , Robert was a polish immigrant tazered to death by Vancouver police. He was obviously distraught and confused in his surroundings since he knew no english and was lost. Police arrived and within 24 seconds used 50.000 volts numerous times to subdue him ... Wow, see the video and judge for yourself. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2007/11/14/bc-taservideo.html I find this very upsetting and would like to hear what you think . | |

| disturbing death Posted: 11/14/2007 10:23:14 PM | Well, that's Vancouver for you. Despite their being a self-proclaimed "world-class city," they can't even find anyone in the entire airport who can speak Polish. Makes one wonder just where all the money for increased security as well as the "airport improvement fee" actually goes.
As for this being a "taser" death, from the video it seems more like a "knee on the neck" death. If there's any justice at all, the police officers, the airport corporation, the airport manager and anyone else involved in this tragedy will be held accountable and, at the very LEAST, lose their jobs (and pensions) And absolutely NO severance package!!! Of course, ideally, someone should serve some serious jail time for this.
Absolutely shameful. | |

| disturbing death Posted: 11/14/2007 11:47:38 PM | What is this some kind of polish joke? Umm how many cops does it take to turn out the lights on a pollock? | |

| disturbing death Posted: 11/15/2007 12:21:10 AM | ^^^ there are some moments in life when it is best to be thought a moron than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. THAT comment was totally classless and was not even close to funny.
I watched the video tonight and am sickened. Mr D. was not even close to being combative and crazy as the original news/police statements tried to portray. There is NO excuse that he was not given the opportunity to have an interpreter. May he rest in peace. My thoughts go out to his Mum.

This issue hit me hard for whatever reason and I need to control my response but I will say that the word "murder" comes to mind. I'm not exactly thrilled about the immigrant situation in Canada but this is despicable. I ask from the point of view of Morality , humanity , sympathy and even intelligence. "WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE"....

| disturbing death Posted: 11/15/2007 5:01:48 PM | | I'm sorry, but I can't help putting myself in this poor victim's position. A Polish man wanting to reunite with his mother in Vancouver, which must have been at least a 10 hour flight; with aching ears is apparently made to endure other delays of such duration as to make his mother decide to return home; then is tasered to death by police who have absolutely no idea why he might be in a bad mood. I think maybe airport police should be given a bit more instruction on the unfortunate events that can lead to intolerable frustration and anger in passengers and to be a bit more sympathetic. | |

| disturbing death Posted: 11/15/2007 5:42:44 PM | For THAT, those scumbags that were so ****ing ignorant and apathetic in this situation, I would through their asses to the ditch after I beat the snott out of them. I was furious like heck when I heard this news, and they handled this situation very poorly. If I was that guys mother, I would take me self a nice cold hard steal bat or sledge hammer, and smash those funks skulls in for the stupidity on their parts.
I wouldn't let shit like this be taken lightly. I mean needless to say those people that were so dumb about the situation should be fired and get some counceling too.
I'm sick of these types of incidents and it's time smart and good people stand up and say that we have enough of this kind of stupidity.

| disturbing death Posted: 11/16/2007 1:48:07 AM | Very disturbing. 12 minutes to get a paramedic? An OD "frequent flier" (a skid row over dose who has been brought back to life several times) would have had a fire truck and an ambulance respond and be in hospital in that time.
Pompous Airport Security, Pompous Customs Agents, Pompous RCMP*gs; none of whom could be bothered to treat this man with respect or provide some actual service. All of whom could only think to be confrontational/adversarial.

| disturbing death Posted: 11/16/2007 1:40:41 PM | | This is definately a tragic event. There doesn't seem to be any good coming from this whatsoever. Nobody is learning anything that will benefit anybody in the long run. I was watching the news yesterday and now people are calling for police not to use tazers anymore. All I could do was shake my head at the reasoning behind it. | |

Ya got that right!

Absolutely correct!
Dumbass twits!
Send in the goons! I can't think of anything in a very long time that has made me as angry as the actions/non-actions of these assorted meat-heads
I fail to see the threat....the man had already flown internationally, cleared airport security at both ends, and, Canada customs! He was left to wander about for over 6 hours after landing here, and none of these "bright lights" did a thing to help him out.
OFFICIAL DUMB! at it's worst!
The idiot meat-headed cops decide in less than thirty seconds that the man has to be subdued! Violently! .....Nothing like making a situation as bad as it can possibly be, as quickly as it can be done!
I have to wonder what was the big hurry. After all, the man wasn't considered a threat for hours, for that matter, he wasn't considered at all!
A smile, and an extended hand of friendship, and helpfulness, would have gone a long way to defuse the situation!
That this situation was handled in the way that it was....completely inexcuseable.

| disturbing death Posted: 11/19/2007 8:52:17 PM | | I can't bring myself to watch the video...it's hard enough to even think about it. But it brings to mind something else I saw on our local news about a week ago. They are selling personal tasers now...hoping to sell them to women. They showed a short clip of a woman shooting one at the backs of a man's legs... for demonstration purposes. Two big men were holding his arms... that taser brought his feet right out from under him. The tasers come in a metallic hot pink color...I guess so that a woman can look sexy while she is inflicting unbearable pain on someone. Unbelievable. | |
|
| disturbing death Posted: 11/19/2007 9:19:45 PM | You know what? It's unfortunate, tragic even, that this man had to die at the hands of police officers, but what do you think would have happened if the RCMP showed up and saw a man in an agitated state waving a chair or table around in a threatening manner and they did nothing and the man ended up doing something crazy and opening fire or detonating a bomb, killing several innocent people, or shooting the officers while waiting for an interpreter. You'd be all over the cops saying 'Why didn't they do something to subdue him? He was freaking out and they didn't do anything and all these people died. They should have known he was a danger to society yet they did nothing!'
By the way, there are about 6000 languages in the world, it's impossible to hire someone to interpret every single one of them and have them at the airport 24/7. Even with the major languages it would be a logistical nightmare to have interpreters for all of them on hand, not to mention the fact that it would cost a fortune.

So then, "hoop", what, exactly, is the nature of your particular psychological problem? Why do you feel the need to troll on a thread such as this with your mindless, asinine posts which seem to be meant solely "to incite the emotions of the masses."? Rather pathetic, if this is your only way of getting attention. If that's the best you can do, perhaps you should avoid this thread and leave it to people who actually DO care.

| disturbing death Posted: 11/19/2007 9:44:34 PM | ^^^ point IS/WAS that he was NOT waving furniture around when the police arrived, he was non aggressive and quickly had his hands UP when they encountered him. We aren't discussing WHAT IF he were doing this or that... only WHAT he was doing or not doing at the time. As for interpreters? maybe there wasn't one who spoke Polish available,... oh wait...seems NONE were!!!!!! BTW many interpreters speak multiple languages. | |
|
| disturbing death Posted: 11/20/2007 10:14:21 AM | | I dn't know how people expect to find a Polish interpreter in an airport when the gov't can't even provide services in English in Quebec! Some offices have nobody that speaks or understands English. (East of montreal) | |

| disturbing death Posted: 11/20/2007 3:53:10 PM | I presume it's a rather large airport. Maybe they've got enough money to employ people fluent in various languages, particularly languages likely to be spoken by arriving passengers. After all, I work in a department store in Cork and we've got a guy fluent in six European languges, plus English. (He can even speak some Irish!) As for the cops; they seemed too eager to use violence when a more restrained approach might have helped. | |

| disturbing death Posted: 11/20/2007 4:54:32 PM | | It's his own fault tor being upset in the first place. The police were doing their job, and have a right to use methods that minimize risk to themselves. Besides, if his physiology was unable to withstand being electrocuted he should have been wearing a big sign that said so. | |
|
| disturbing death Posted: 11/20/2007 5:23:47 PM | Here in Maryland a few people have died over the past few months as a result of being tasered. Most recently a 20 year old man.
http://wjz.com/local/taser.fight.police.2.570728.html
It seems the weapons are more powerful than originally believed and any underlying medical conditions may be the reason so many people are dying from them.
The police are not out to kill these people, but merely subdue those that are out of control or danger to themselves or others.
|
| disturbing death Posted: 11/21/2007 4:17:19 AM | | I watched the video... twice... at least the part when the police arrive. While I (mostly) agree that he could have been subdued some other way, there is just one question that remains. After the first taser, as the man's arms are flailing about, I noticed a rod- like black object in his right hand. Anyone else notice this? | |

| disturbing death Posted: 11/21/2007 10:40:58 AM | I aint sure what vedio everyone watched the one I saw, he was throwing chairs, ranting and raving. What language do you have to speak to recognize men with weapons and uniforms are either law inforcement or military? He was told to halt with voices and hand signals. He did not and if you were one of the passangers in the area, you would want him stopped before he hurt some innocent bystander. Was his death tragic? Yes. Could it have been avoided? Yes, if "he" would have acted calmly and civilized. | |
