The late 80's/early 90's was definitely the golden age of extreme metal. Death and Black Metal were both born. Death metal bands like Death, Morbid Angel, Possessed, Deicide, Obituary, Monstrosity, Cryptopsy, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Unleashed, Dismember. Black Metal acts such as Mayhem, Darkthrone, Emperor, Satyricon, Abigor, Burzum, Bathory, Ulver, Arcturus. Thrash metal icons such as Megadeth, Kreator, Exodus, Slayer, Sepultura, Dark Angel, Anthrax, and dare I say it... Metallica. All these bands were in their prime, and created some of the most amazing music.

Will we ever have another golden age of metal? Or are we eternally doomed to looking through underground acts and bands of old to find truly great material?

I'd like to have your take on it.

I doubt it. Metal may come and visit every few years or so, under old or new names...you know, pop in for a beer or a record or two...but it will never reuturn in all of its glory that it once had.

Even though in the beginning of the 90's there were a crapload of amazing bands, I think that there are some pretty good bands today, such as:

a) Machine Head
b) Behemoth
c) High On Fire
d) Enslaved

Just to name a few, they might not be as big as Slayer, Death and Mayhem were back in the day, but if you look hard enough you'll always find some wicked bands.

Well, I have my doubts as to whether or not there will ever be another 'classic era' of metal, but much in the same way I doubt there will ever be another classic era in any other genre that flourished in the past. One thing that has to be remembered is that we are all old enough to remember such a time when all this 'new' music was being created, and so for us that time has gone and we are now left with the aftermath.

Look at punk, or hip-hop, industrial and heck, even grunge... These are a few examples of genres that bloomed within the last few decades. (with the possible exception of punk.) Now, were you to listen to those specific genres as a young adult when they emerged on the scene, then you might be privvy to believe that everything else that has come after it is sub-par.

But I say the same thing to anyone who's looking for anything 'new' as I will say to you; you have to dig deeper. Metal's never been very commercial. Even in the advent of Much Music, bands that made it 'big' are still relatively unknown to the music community as a whole. Heck, it took almost 20 years for stations to recognize Metallica as a musical force, (although truly I use the term loosely,) and even then I doubt you're going to get much else than anything of of Black and Re-Load.

My point is simple. Amazing bands still exist in every genre, but with the over-saturation of the music community, these bands fall farther and farther into obscurity. What does this mean? Well, you actually have to look for it a bit more. Will there ever be another golden age? I doubt it, at least not to us. But then again that was a time in our lives we remember, perhaps not so much for the music as much as when we lived it. And who knows? Maybe in ten years the younger generations will be looking back at bands like Lamb of God and Unearth as their golden age of metal.

Sure, there will be future "golden eras" or "classic" era of metal. But they will be referred to it as such after the fact or in hindsight.

Having grown up in the 80's I can certainly relate to what you are saying. However now-days most domestic mainstream metal is just down right terrible. I find the new bands I enjoy the most are bands released on indie labels or from the Scandinavia countries. They seem to take their metal seriously!

Yep, indie labels and even unlabeled acts produce todays top metal, generally. The 'mainstream' is pure marketing 'rinse n repeat' product.
Yes, Thor's children make great metal!

I think Iron Maiden ruled the metal scene in the 80's.

Metal "era" never came and went.....its always been here and is as popular as ever! The old bands still pack arenas to the rafters (and with a fair old smattering of youngsters too...not just 35+)...Can't wait for Iron Maidens next tour..they are not releasing a new album,,,they are doing a tour of all the best stuff they have ever done!!! (Or so I have been told). Sabbath were awesome last week...Heaven and Hell tour rocks! the current emo fashion is making the older stuff more popular than ever....my neice and nephew (aged 15 and 13) are well into my aging music collection more than their current modern stuff....and I have progressed to the dizzy heights of Cool Auntie!

this is lolworthy, explain to me what makes you believe BM is dead and what's available now is "shit"

if BM were dead, there wouldn't be countless awesome BM bands out there right now such as:

Dragonlord
Nattervrede
Darkthrone (a pioneer might I add, who does more than just BM)
Enslaved
Orkrist (folk BM)
Glorior Beli
Carpathian Forest
Crystal Abyss
Flammentod
Graveland
Hithlum
Hordes of Nebula
Immortal
Infernal Beauty
Infernal Thorn
Infernal War
Keep of Kalessin
etc

Do I really need to go on providing up to date explanations of why BM isn't dead and how none of these bands are shit?

Metal still exists? What do you call Korn, Marilyn Manson, and Disturbed? or are those bands in a category of their own?
I still like the classic metal bands better because they didn't use all the F bombs and slapping up beeotches type words (kind of like general Rap songs into Metal).
I think the beginnings of Metal like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest are still some of the best.

That's called nu-metal. AKA bullshit metal which sucks terribly. I'll give david of disturbed credit though, he has a great voice.

I do indeed like Opeth also, mikael is a great vocalist and guitarist. I'll be curious to see what direction they go with the new album since their old guitarist left and will be replaced by fredrik akesson (ex arch enemy). Should be a more lively album I would think.

I think the metal is the ONLY genre (with lots of subgenres of course) that will have an underground again and again and again. Metal is just a little to aggressive to make it entirely mainstream. I've been into a lot of music in my day, and always go back to metal because I will ALWAYS find something killer - eventually. You may have to sift through a lot of shit , but it's always there. As far as I am concerned, no one is really making metal music to make a million bucks. I've seen LOG in tiny little squats with like 25 people in attendance, same with Mastodon & ****, even Metallica & Slayer. As long as the basic (message?) music is real, and perhaps angry :) the mainstream will let it be.

Anyone here seen the Dark Funeral/Naglfar tour? I was disappointed with both bands even though I like all of their material. I've never seen Naglfar before & thought they were sort of cartoonlike ... depressing! I have seen DF a lot & this was possibly their weakest show.

I love black metal; it reminds me of how punk or hardcore used to be viewed in the 70s/80s
