| How do you know when a POF member posts a fake pic?
Posted: 11/16/2007 10:36:42 AM | | I was IMing with a POF user who seemed a lil self-concious about his pic. The pic was with his shirt off muscles bulging... Not something most guys are ashamed of. Then he introduces me to a friend of his who is also on POF. Only this guys pic is not nearly as hot. They both add me to their favorites and I see they log in within minutes of each other every day. I asked guy number one if the pic was really him and he said yes. I asked guy number two if he and guy number one were actually the same person, of course he said no. Then another day I asked guy number one if he were the same person as guy number two and he said it was the third time I had asked if the pic were fake. Actually, it was only the second time I asked guy number one. Three times if guy one and two are the same person. I'm not superficial about pics, I just don't like the idea of being blatently deceived. Has this happend to anyone else? Any suggestions as to how to spot a fake? | |

Posted: 11/16/2007 10:51:12 AM | Girl follow your gut instinct, it is always right, it has been happening quite a bit, I've had a couple of guys with double profiles, One post pic. the other refuses.
One with same pic. the other with same name....
I think some times the young guys hang out with one another and if you wont chat with one, the others give it a try, I used to get this...... | |

Posted: 11/16/2007 11:21:55 AM | This happens more than most have any idea. I have gotten email from characters like this, and I delete them. I do not respond because if they have the audacity to be so deceiving then they do not deserve my attention/response.
If they look like a "Runway Model" in their pictures, have pictures of Yachts and all sorts of a very expensive "toys" that should definitely raise red flags. That's not to say that we don't have models on these sites, but rarely will you see your "Average Joe" have pictures posted like that!
Another clue is the contents of their profile (verbiage)....some will say that they are going through some sort of "hardship", lost their wife and now raising their child, etc...., and the next thing you know they are asking you for $$$ to be transferred to some foreign country. AKA con artists, so please be careful. There are sites that expose these idiots. The name escapes me... , but be very selective/careful about who you entertain.
You'll get hip to the different characters and agendas with experience on these types of venues. Use your intuition/street smarts!!! | |

Posted: 11/16/2007 12:03:22 PM | only one suggestion meet them before developing a relationship with them and not on your own either take a gf with ya .....some are ummm kinda obvious then theres others where im like hmm well maybe thats him but meh dont matter if i feel like its a bullshit picture it probably is.
its kinda sickenin how people like to deceive other people about how they look because from the get go the one that shows interest in them is picturing a completely different person when really it aint even them and theyve already lied about who they are...nice start to any relationship friendship or otherwise...at least with these ones its quit and painless and easy to laugh about.
how about someone contacts you says they dont have a picture then a few days later says oh i have another profile and my picture is on that one and ya come to find out he doesnt look a thing like how he described well cya later buddy thats complete bullshit too. i mean whys he gonna approach without a pic lie sayin he dont have one then say oh by the way.....yea not my type of person at alll.
my advice to anyone on here.....it works well for me...expect nothing and youll never be disappointed but sweetly surprised when someone good comes along. | |

Posted: 11/16/2007 12:03:56 PM | Same thing is true on the guys end too! I have been more than a little surprised upon meeting a girl w/ a cute profile pic who looks nothing like that in person.
After being burned a few times, I have come to realize that extremely close-up face pics, washed out (like too much flash) pics, puckered lips, or pics that have been cropped are all red flags that let a guy know the girl is probably hiding a little extra junk in the trunk...nothing wrong with that---just don't misrepresent what and who you are! | |

He seemed to have such a nice personality. If only he had hit me up as the real him the first time instead of using a pic of his cousin. Let that be a lesson to anyone else trying the same thing. | |

Sometimes you will see the hair being blown around as if from a shampoo ad. Pics that just look a little too good to be true SHOULD be questioned.
Some pics here are cut and pasted. There is one here that I've seen for almost a year now that the person is obviously cut from the background. I saw another user change from black to white. I thought only Michael Jackson could do that.
But you want to know the real technical way to tell is to understand how false pictures, like CGI is made. I really reccomend renting Nicholas Cage's "Next" just out on DVD and watching the Special Features on the disc which explain how they do the photography.
Vacation photo shots are easy to spot for an experienced photographer like myself because I know that magazine covers use light dispersion techniques to make the light soft and even and all over. Real sun is nothing like that. It is harsh with harsh shadows. Anything too well evenly exposed is a professional at work. So a lot of it is in looking at the shadows. Try it some time -- pull out your vacation photos on a beach or bbq or backyard and compare them to a magazine's pics, what do you see? Look in their shadows compared to your shadows.
I'd be glad to point out details but due to the rules here no mentioning other users names or profiles. Feel free to PM me with a link to a user's pic and I'll give you my opinion and if I have time I'll show you what I am talking about above.
[Edit: I suppose I can talk about yours. Take a look at your fourth picture in the shadows on the sides of your head by the cushion. Notice how dark they are because you probably used a camera with a straight ahead flash. If it was a professional session those shadows would not be nearly that dark there. If it were outside at noon the shadows would be lower. If you were facing north and it was late in the day the shadows would be on the left side of your head on the picture....etc...etc]
The bottom line technical aspect is this: Lightrays only travel straight. So if the person looks lit one way while the background is a different way then a pic is fake. This is by far one of the most obvious ways to fake a pic and how to spot a counterfeit picture.
Often when taking a shot a person will be front lit so its obvious the light source came from the front. Now if the background is lit from a side lit source then the picture is obviously made up of two separate pics.
When CGI is done the software actually writes or "traces" each and every ray of light. It's called raytracing and it is CPU intensive. Not so much anymore, but when movies like Terminator 2 they used a Cray II supercomputer and over 100 million dollars in computing time alone, if I recall correctly. On a home computer of its day that raytracing might have taken thousands of years.
When I sent my first picture to a person here I wanted to share with I stood by my bigscreen with their mail message plainly visible in the pic as well. Mildly clever, even if I say so myself. Pretty hard to fake that! (but then you can't be sure I didn't take a picture of a neighbor, buddy, or anyone else for that matter) In the end it really only proved it was taken that day, not that they had any reason to disbelieve me.

Posted: 11/16/2007 1:01:29 PM | I must admit I put a fake picture on my site and made it a very funny spoof. I had a tons of responds and made a lot of people laugh. I told them in the bio it was NOT me. It was an eye opener for me in a some ways though. There were many guys that would not read the bio's and they thought they landed the big fish of all... lol. Then I would have to tell them honey you need to go back and read the story in my bio. I never tried to pretend to be that beautiful women.
But seeing how guys would run to the picture I had so many hits in matter of minutes. I can see why people don't really want to show their* Real Self*they are lonely and want someone to pay them a little attention. Sorry to say, and after that I could see it was a very very shallow dating world. It is sad that we can't just be our self out in this crazy dating world. I'm 51 pretty average, but at this age I don't hike, ski or run marathons and all those other guys bio around my age, they all sound like super jocks they can hike to the highest mountain in a single bound... They can probable ski holding there phone, drinking their coffee all in one single leap 
I deleted that bio and just put up my normal one. I still have to say the other one was a lot of fun. I feel sorry for the person that takes it all the way pretending to be the person they are not, that will hurt them in the long run. So people really just be yourself fully someone will love you for you...... | |

And if he/she says that he/she doesn't own one , ask to get one it doesn't cost much, and if he /she is reallly interested to you he/she will do it, IF NOT, don't waste your time get out! | |

Beware this is SCAM, he'll asks for money to send to a foreign country , he'll tell you a lot of bullshits stories...like to call him on his phone, and if you ask him to call on your phone , he would say "something wrong I can't get through" it means he is a fake and SCAMMER.
So ladies, use your "INTUITION" will never let you down, this is your only crystal ball to believe in...
Donot believe if he send you few photos, he could have gotten if from friends, unsuspecting relatives etc, GET A PC CAMERA to see what the crooks look like! | |

She made a fake profile with a picture of a well-known model. How he didn't recognize her, I'll never know. Anyway, he hit on it right away and set up a date.
Guess who showed up at the date ...

It is simple solution, I tell them when meeting that relationships are based on truth, and honest, and the ability to communicate openly, and based on the fact that the picture that brought us together was knowingly deceptive, I see no point in pursuing the relationship any further. So in truth I doubt you can tell prior to meeting if a pic is a true and accurate description of the person you are talking to, but if you decide to pursue it further you can end it if it isnt. Other thing you can do is get them on a webcam on instant messenger if it is that big a deal. | |
