Advanced search doens't seem to work

Advanced search doesn't seem to work. No matter what I put as criteria, there are zero returns and when I click refine, it goes to basic search. If its not going to be supported, please remove it or improve it.

Review your Search Criterias Carefully. Often you have entered something for which few/no Results could possibly exist.

As I said in the post, I tried all kinds of criteria including almost no limits at all and still zero results. When this feature is selected, a menu of criteria is displayed. I assume these are the search criteria and that others don't apply. That does not explain why "refine search" jumps to basic search. I have tried two computers on different networks configured differently with the same results. Since advanced search is not available in many screens, I assume it is not supported, just not completely eliminated.

Update: I set all characteristics to don't care, set the distance to the maximum of 200 miles which probably covers a population of 30 million, and set the age range 18 to 99. I got one match which is better than zero. This feature really does not work!

Works for me fine, so the problem is at your End.

Double-check your Postal Code in your Profile for Correctness.

Postal Code in your Profile

Agreed. There is no such city as "Far North Dallas" so in order to have put that in your profile as a location, it means you didn't type in a legitimate Zip Code. If you put in your proper Zip code, it will enter the proper city for you and the search will have a place to measure from. With nothing in there, the software might place you in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico or something.

You can't expect the software to know the name of your general neighborhood. It is like entering the name of your subdivision.

Incorrect.
Does not mean you didnt type in a legit zip code.
It means he manually wrote down his city name, as all of us do when we create a profile. He just didnt put down the most accurate info.

Advanced searches are solely based on drop down menus and the occasional fill in box. You can put on your profile that you live in Timbucktoo but in the advanced search manually type in the city name.

If you look on the search page...
http://www.plentyoffish.com/advancedsearch.aspx
You can see you get to manually fill in your city, and search criteria.
If when you go there, its already partially filled out, its usually based on your previous search. For example, when I look it shows the city my folks live in, not where I live in, because I was deliberately looking to meet locals in their home town. It doesn't show me anything based on my postal code/zipcode, but instead based on what info I manually entered.

I suspect that if the OP isnt getting any returns to his searches its because hes either putting too many criteria on his searches or has made an error like accidentally saying you only want to meet people 4'10 and under, etc. Just a word of caution, when doing advanced searches I would be hestitant to search with mulitple keywords/interests, especially if you have other restrictions such as location, age, height, relationship type, etc.

I stand corrected. I went to my profile and checked it out, even putting North Dallas in my own profile and no Zip code. I was successful in finding four women who had entered the name of "North Dallas as their location and a search of 200 miles out yielded many.

It seems to be working fine. Sorry for the mis-information.

I figure if the newscasts, weather forecast and political leaders refer to my area as far north Dallas, that is VERY ACCURATE in describing the location. It has a specific zip code that is also exact. No, it is not an independent incorporated location but a unique part of the city of Dallas but unlike the rest of Dallas, it is not in Dallas county. Dallas is one of the largest cities in the US and specifying the part of the city is more accurate. This part of Dallas is farther removed from the city than many Dallas burbs. The term "Far North Dallas" is very descriptive but the interesting part is: I DID NOT USE FAR NORTH DALLAS IN THE ADVANCED SEARCH. I used adjacent suburbs each with populations of over 100,000 and several zip codes. Dallas has many zip codes and some are quite far away. The search zip code is not even in the advanced search menus but the search city is. I tried entering "Dallas" and had a huge number of matches including those in the suburb I tried. It would appear the search scheme actually uses zip code data for the distance matching but requires the user enter the official name of the city that matches the profile zip code. If the logic of this doesn't make sense well, that is why the search logic does not work HERE. The advanced search should not have an entry for the search city if it does not use it for searching unless it matches the profile.
Why do I feel the majority of responses on this thread have been insulting? I would like to think people are more constructive and friendly. Maybe its because I am used to living in Far North Dallas.

My neighbourhood is called "downtown London" in newcasts too but it certainly can't be found on a map. You can not expect POF to know specific local only terms.

That being said, its all a mute point for the simple fact, you didnt put that in the search field.

One option I would recommend for you is this.
Instead of the advanced search try this.
http://www.plentyoffish.com/basicsearch.aspx
and input your zipcode only
dont put in a city/area nickname, just leave it with your zipcode and then restrict it on other things such as .... with 5/8/10/25/50/75/100/150/200 miles

at the top it might say something like....
Results 0 to 15 out of 600+ results are shown below, sorted by date last online.
BUT JUST TO BE CLEAR, that doesnt mean there are zero results, I consider it poorly worded, it should say 1 to 15 out of x+results

Cause you are either imagining it or misreading a post. Not one message was insulting you or belittling you. Every last one offered helpful information.

In view of the Fact no Insults have been posted, I am unable to account for your "Feelings". If helping you produces such Results, I'd rather just close off this Thread.

Why does the advanced search have an entry box for a city if it uses the profile zip code?

I chose to use advanced search to narrow down the search criteria. It doesn't allow me to search specific places without matching my zip code.

You do not need to enter a Postal Code for the Advanced Search. Since Distance from You is an Issue, your Postal Code has to be correct.

As my Link above clearly demonstrates, the City, if submitted, converts to a Postal Code. If absent, it defaults to a State-wide Search, unless the Spelling of the City Name, whether such a city exists or not, is an exact 100% Match.

Your Postal Code will not match with Far North Dallas if its a Non-incorporated City or Town, and you won't find anybody unless they have also entered Far North Dallas exactly.
