Yahoo Messenger

Just some questions about this popular messenger:

#1: How common is it to use Yahoo Messenger here to chat with members of the opposite sex for the first time chats? It's the only messenger I have used in about ten years. I have never liked AOL or MSN.

#2: Has anyone else had the problem of being given a Yahoo ID to use and never have the other party approve it for use? - This has happen to me a couple times already. I have been gave a yahoo ID, and I add it to my friend's list, and after a couple weeks they never get online an approve the ID. Is this a new method of being stood up? - Just curious

#3: I seem to find myself hating the newest versions of yahoo messenger. So I go to an Old Wares (legal) site to find versions of yahoo messenger that are over a year old. Has anybody else had issues with the newest yahoo messenger being way too intrusive (too much spying) and hogging up too much system resources (RAM Memory)?

I have more questions, but it's Thanksgiving and time to eat!! Yum Yum!!

I use this:

http://www.trillian-messenger.net/

Works much better, and lets you chat with any other client.

And NO ADS!!!

Is that one of those messengers that is supposed to work with all the other ones? So far I have had bad luck with the universal ones, but I have not tried the one you listed. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks

1)
Another one is Pidgin (previously known as gaim).
http://www.pidgin.im/

This is the one I use (or was using). It supports Yahoo, MSN, and a bunch of others.

*** A lot of people are on MSN, so it is useful if you like to online chat. ***

I used to spend a lot of time online chatting then I figure out that it works better for me to use emails and then meet in person for a coffee and chat. I just meet much more new people that way.

In any case, I have this theory that I'm more compatible with email people than online chat people.

2)

Even with MSN ids, sometimes people will reply by giving their id and say come online chat with me. They will often not even reply to the questions asked in the email. Might be that they don't like to use email or not much interested (especially if you never see them online or rarely...) Kind of weird to ask to online chat but never be visible online, hey. :) Normal people that are not on the online chat often would use email or phone.

guy_in_toronto_28: Are you aware of all the "Bots" used in chats these days? I'm no fan of chat rooms either, I much rather call on a phone or use email. The big problem with yahoo chat is the huge amounts of porn-Bots. These are programs that are fairly inteligent. They say things to get you suckered into a private chat then they try to lure you to a pay website, or worse yet, they try to lure you to install some VIRUS type software. From what you describe, thats what it sounds like you have came across with.

Once I found out how to tell the bots from real Females I found chatting to be a lot more easy on my nerves!

Im a musician and Im using my mixer and microphone to hook up for a sound chat. The cam will have to come latter. But Im eager to try your all's universal messenger's to see how far they have came along.

Thanks for the advise, and please keep it coming.

Me.

miranda is by far the most robust multiple client messenger. just takes a while to set it up to your likings. not the most noob friendly either.

i am in the alpha testing for the new trillian astra messenger...and that's pretty cool too. if all you are looking to do is chat, these chat clients are much cleaner. imo.

i had the same problem though, i was so sick of all these messengers loading abuncha garbage into their programs. ads, video, etc....so i stopped using them.

A nifty little program called APatch can help out with ads on MSN messenger.

You can get rid of the ad box, get rid of the tabs, pretty much get rid of all the annoying parts of MSN.

It lets you customize it to pretty much anyway you want. You can even nudge someone in to oblivion if you want!

Make sure you have a clean install of MSN before starting though.

http://apatch.org/

MSN does have one nice feature going for it. The "all others" can be put on the block list so that only people that you approved can get through to you.

#1 I use Y msgr to talk to people on here. Then again I also have MSN for my friends/family and I still use aim/icq for those frew stubborn folks that won't go msn/yahoo. Gaim is is a good client that will do multiple msgr clients.

#2 Nope, everytime I get one, they are there. Now the quality of the chat, or them asking for a phone number too soon, seems to be a rash occurance.

#3 I'm using version 8.1.0.402 of Yahoo Mgr. No issues with it on Windows 2000 Pro. Though if I use it on my laptop (XP Media Center Edition), it crashes constantly. Which just furthers my distaste for XP (and I'm an IT tech type guy).

For an older version of Y!m, try www.oldversion.com Or goto www.portableapps.com and grab GAIM. I run Gaim off my pendrive for work/home usually. And Gaim doesn't crash terribly on XP, like yahoo seems to lately.

Yea I got an old version from OldVersion.com. But recently I tried Yahoo's latest messenger and it seems the bugs are gone- it's working fine except for the chat room bots and the ability of hackers to boot ya out of a room! Is there any FREE programs to keep people from booting you out of a chat room? Y!Tunnel is one, but is no longer Free, and I don't wish to pay for it.

One user told me to get YahElite- So I went to their forums and finally found the otherwise download at another site. I dont understand whats up with using YahElite because for me it's far more complex, and not user friendly at all- the opposite of it's selling point.

So far everyone I asked about using a messenger has had a Yahoo Id. Weird, I have yet to meet anybody that only used MSN or another type- not yet anyway.

Not a fan of IMs but I much prefer Yahoo to MSN. I recently upgraded to the latest Yahoo and found the ads intrusive. But if you google the problem, there is a neat little file that gets rid of it. I've also used the yahoo with voice to talk to someone from the States - using a £5 microphone. No problems.

I'd actually like to know what the file does, before I run it. I'd rather do it manually if I could, vs running a program, that I have no clue what it does on my system. =) Just call me paranoid, or protective of my system.

Computer guys, go figure. =)

#1 -I think it's ok to use yahoo IM for the first chat because it is much quicker than the pof one.
#2 -When you send the add request you can type in a message, you should say something like "hi it's jammer from POF" because I know girls get a lot of random unsolicited friend requests on yahoo.

good luck.

I have read a profile here that claims the POF messenger never worked on her computer. I have yet to try the POF version myself. I hope I'm not missing anything. (be my luck- lol)

You should be using the latest yahoo messenger, the older version has exploits, if you don't like the current version then I highly suggest you use pidgin. It is clean and very fast nothing even comes close to the speed and quality.

i've always hated yahoo's messenger. i only use aim. the new aim is actually pretty cool with aimhack installed. i removed just about everything. trillian stopped working for me last year, it won't do anything. i emailed them but they were useless.
