Proving you're single???
Posted: 11/22/2007 7:53:55 PM
Is there any relatively simple way to prove to someone your marital status? More importantly that you're single? There's a marriage certificate, but no single certificate...

I just received an offline message from someone I had chatted with once before. She seemed really interested in me, I hadn't caught her online recently, sent her a note yesterday to say hello and wish her a happy Turkey Day and then today I get an offline IM today accusing me of being married and having children! lol The only thing I can think of that would lead her to this conclusion is that there is somebody out there using my picture somewhere else claiming status as married with kids.

I have never been married, I have never fathered any children, never adopted, etc. I'm sure there are some legal documents that you could get a hold of, or maybe not. I guess if it was someone that this was critical for you could have them run a background check; they're usually about 40 bucks right? I'm a little perplexed. It's especially a hard thing to prove when you're not in the same town. Maybe she sent the message to the wrong profile. lol I'll report more when I find out where she got this idea from...

Thanks,
Josh

Proving you're single? That's a bit much...

If she's really jumped off the deep end and start accusing you of being married and having kids... perhaps you might wanna keep fishing. That one seems to have been thrown back a few times.

I suppose she could google your full name and include in the search parameters marital status or marriage licenses.

It is possible that she intended to send the IM to someone else but clicked on your name by mistake. That does happen.

Or she could be a paranoid whacko.

Ummm if she's accusing you of this without even explaining herself.....RUN!!! Already she's not comunicating with you. And for you to try and go OUT of your way to convince her of this is giving her control. You owe her nothing, she hasn't even exlained where all this is coming from. She at least owes you that much! Good Luck!

Yeah, I've taken all of these things into consideration, but I wanted to refrain from expressing my own suspicions or name-calling. Don't know that I'm interested in continuing with this interest unless there's a really interesting explanation. It's just the topic that interests me more than anything, it got me to thinking, how can you prove that you're not married? Pretty wild concept.

Prove you're paying attention.

Well, hell, OPie, you're the one who's had two whole chats with her! If you don't have her dossier complet by now, what do you expect us to tell you?

But, just in case you don't trust you're own instincts enough to go with them, I'll tell you: It's me. It was me. I was just fvcking with you to waste some time, but it was too easy!

Now, if you just give me your checking account number, I'll transfer $10,000,000 into it from Tanzania, OK? We can split it up on Tuesday, when I get to your place.

Cheers!

I already know that this girl is very likely most probably bad news. I'm asking if it's possible to prove you're single. Thank you Dr. Phil's and Oprah's - lol I guess I set myself up by posting in "Relationships" but I didn't see any other forums that looked more appropriate, like "Legal Issues" lol

Understood, she's psycho. But for curiosity's sake...

Well, a legal answer is that if you provide her with your full name and some details she can hire someone to do a background check on you. If you have an arrest record, have been married or are married and if you have children etc. But do you want to give out your personal information to have someone do a check on you? Unless you call youself and give the professionals your details and have a background check done on yourself by yourself and show her...either case it sounds like a lot to work to prove that you are single.

But if she is asking for proof there must be a reason unless she is bloody mad. You do not even really know her. I would not be involved with someone who seems to have some issues and already is accusing you of wild things and feels the need for you to prove that you are single. Maybe she ate too much turkey and it did not agree with her and she had a moment of temporary insanity or she was having some Wild Turkey.

Hmmm. Do you have a friend who can run and print out a background check on you? That is about all. I had to have it done to prove I had no criminal record before my last contract, and since it was comprehensive, it also included some info I had no idea was really out there on me - like that I lived common-law for three years. I imagine that a marriage would show up. It included the birth date and time for my child, and records of every time I left and returned to the country since I was a child. The check was on bequest of the employer, but I got to read it because that was a close personal friend of mine. (obviously the check was for work on a sensitive job. lol - I'm a bloody bricklayer, how dangerous can that job be to internal security?)

Well, there really is only one way to show someone that you're single, if you really want to go that extreme, though I would never think that extreme was neccessary. But your tax return shows single or married on it to the Federal Government. I guess it would be possible to lie on that form, but then again these are extreme situations some people get themselves into.

People are scary.

You chatted with the whackjob twice?

We are all forgetting, its okay for a woman to think men are guilty until proven innocent, but a man is looked down upon in most cases or put at fault if he thinks the same.

Dont think there is any way to prove your single other than including this person into your world... ie, friends, family, home. This of course would be after a few dates and when you felt completely comfortable doing so...

I myself just carry my divorce certificate in my purse. I shouldnt have to but have had to in the past.

Best of luck

I'll tell you what works for me. I speak my mind and after about 3 minutes no woman could imagine me not being single. I have never been asked to prove anything. Hello? Are you still there?

It is pretty easy to prove it. You are online and have a picture. Unless your g/f or wife are stupid they would know. Also most single men are online in the evenning. It would be nice to have our daily single certificate together with our STD clearance...
LOL You men are all cracking me up.... Well a guy I was talking to accused me of being mad at him...hmm people assume too much without even knowing you here.

my pathetic aura usually speaks for itself in that regard haha

seriously ,is she for real?
this all seems a *bit* much right out the gate...

I think I'm going to start a "yes I'm single, employed and STD free" club , stamp up some cards and everything! that would make things easier.....

This makes me think, what do women have to offer, really, what does a man get out of it besides sex?

It would be a miracle if a woman can explain this properly

Oh the big question may be asked, what do women do for men lol?

Hi Josh,

It's hard out there is singleville to distinguish who you are and what your all about. I would just put down that your not married and you have never had children..even though down the line you may be interested in having a few rug rats running around..until then. Take your word for it or continue looking and wish her happy holidays and through it back in her court.

In the meantime..happy holidays too

Anyone who leaves an off line message such as you describe is just not worth your time or energy trying to convince them of anything. I've had these same sort of nut cases accuse me of various things just after or even during an IM chat so your experience isn't isolated to just this gal. Truth is who cares what she thinks especially since you aren't that well acquainted or emotionally involved at this point. If she was persuaded to seek verification or just assumes you're not as you say then again who cares----someone so easily swayed or coerced against you would be nothing but a drama queen extraordinaire---do you want that in your life?

Just because someone from the internet wants or needs you to "prove" youself does not mean it's necessary to do so for them. Someone well balanced would allow themselves to discover more about you and make their own decisions and choices----this one doesn't seem to be "all there" at least in this regard.

Your last line about her perhaps having sent the off line message to the wrong reciepient might also be correct---sounds like it doesn't really reflect your past conversations with her.

Best of luck------hope it was just a simple mistake.
