| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/23/2007 6:09:24 PM | hello everyone,
I have to say God Bless ..so far I have no major ilnesses to be concerned about. However....I've come to the point now where I really want to become more informed about overall health ,,in particular to the toxins that we (inadvertently..sp??) put into our bodies. so here are a few things I"ve decided to do and would like ur feedback on them as well as WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU DONE
1. No more DIET Sodas.............hear horror stories about aspertame??
2. No more Anti Inflamatories for pain....want to go the alternative route...any suggestsions?
3. Less use of Microwave....I dunno just doesn't sound good to begin with!!
4. Removing any/all of my mercury fillings (from old cavities.). There is lots of literature on this subject.
5. Looking for deodorants with NO aluminum...leaks into breast area
SO what are ur thoughts so far? I know this is a LONG process but I'm young and this is the time to do it. I used to have "on and off" asthma (even thought 2 doctors told me yes you do and the other said no you don;t" I lost some weight and haven't used any puffers for a lONG time. Coincident u think??
Look forward to hearing your stories...

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/23/2007 8:52:22 PM | 1. Not drinking municipal water, unless I have read a complete environmental report on it first.
2. Growing my own vegetables, after I have had the soil tested for any contaminants.
3. Raising my own cattle, chickens, and other meat products, and testing their food source for contaminants weekly.
4. Never walking or driving under power lines.
5. Not holding a cell phone close to my ears.
6. Peeing in alleys, in order to avoid germs in public bathrooms.
7. Never leave my house without a full body condom.
|
| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/23/2007 9:32:01 PM | I stopped smoking.
I stopped eating ground beef.
I try to eat organic beef when I do eat red meat.
I stopped drinking milk. Only what I call "predigested" milk proteins like yogurt, cheese, and buttermilk. Whey protein powder is fine, too.
I'm more proactive about booting anyone out of my life who I deem to be a toxic influence. It's nothing personal, it is just what is best.
I'm slowly moving away from the mercury fillings.
But I don't understand why this, OP, and you might need to be more specific if you want a better answer:
2. No more Anti Inflamatories for pain....want to go the alternative route...any suggestsions?
There are herbs, there are homeopathics, msm, chondrointin, various form of sulfur(which the previous two are) and trace minerals, boatloads of omega 3 type products, boatloads of heating/cooling packs, boatloads of heating/cooling creams...etc..etc
Black Currant Oil works for me. I buy capsules at the local health sciences university bookstore where they train chiropractors. I find it an inexpensive source for those types of products. Even the protein powder is 10-15 dollars less than I would buy it for on the internet. Ditto with Traumeel creme. I think the cream is the best bang for the buck.
http://www.traumeel.com/products/?smid=1&prodID=1&modus=1
I tried doing fish oil but my body can not tolerate the doses they say to fight inflammation. I can tolerate a capsule a day but not those megadoses. So I eat more fish.
Pretty much gave up soda pop and do the oolong green tea. I swallow coffee beans whole.
Try to think more positively. There are a number of things I do there from the mundane but basically I just reinforce a simple "stop and smell the roses" attitude. OK, today it was the geese which would be fantastic if they didnt leave so many droppings. I took a short video of the geese as I walked past them while excercising.
I lookout a little. Steer people in the right directions when I can. Made sure a guy got on his right bus today who I think would have spaced right through the next two hours. He missed that it was leaving right across the street and I got him on it back to the hospital. I felt pretty Christmassy being an guardian angel. Tomorrow I shall hoover at the top of the Christmas tree.

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/23/2007 11:02:42 PM | Good for you giving up diet soda, because aspartame is one product that should never be injested by humans. Drink green or better yet, white tea with raw honey or stevia. lemonade is also good. (but not with refined sugar). Its also a very good idea to get the metal out of your mouth. Mercury is the second most toxic poison on the planet, next to uranium, and also good to use the microwave less. Its also better to use a lower power setting, and no plastics. Good natural inflamation fighters are fish oil (capsules if you can't stand the taste), turmeric is very good, as is cats claw. * Its a good idea to not drink tap water. Drink spring water or R.O. water instead. * Its a good idea to not use the teflon non-stick pans, because each time they are heated, they release fluoride gas. * Its a good idea to add a shower filter that blocks chlorine, because hot water opens the pores, and chlorine is something you don't want in your blood stream. * A good natural deodorant is colloidal silver. Its not cheap, but a small bottle will last for a long time. It can be purchased at a health store, and you will need a small spray bottle to put it in, for application. * There are many other things you could do, such as more exercise, buy a juicer and use it often, cut back on refined sugar, caffeine, and red meat. Avoid all processed meats, and fast food. Also avoid foods with MSG in them.(check labels). Stress is a big part of health, so if you can deal with it on a day-to-day basis that would be much better than letting it build. The best way to beat a disease is to prevent it. That means more fruit and vegetables! | |

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/24/2007 2:27:18 AM | I find modifying my diet works wonders for my tolerance and immune system. Asthma and immune issues are in my family as well. Like they keep telling you, go with fruit and veggies as a staple. It's very easy to do. I have those 300 gram prepacked bagged salads for lunch. The 'asian' ones are pretty good. All the others taste like hell. It takes a few months, but you do get used to it and notice a big difference. And no more colds or flus. In the evenings I go with lots of fresh fruit. 10-15 oranges over an evening is not unusual. I mostly avoid bread with yeast, and red meat, its fine once in a while in small amounts. Otherwise it bothers the immune system. Salmon or tuna daily is great. Carbonated anything sucks. No booze. No smokes. Lots of laughter. A good attitude. Common sense. Thats my approach to health. | |

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/24/2007 5:50:52 AM | Eat a fruit like apple everyday and a cup of yoghourt. Do some excercise. Don't eat too much meat but more vegetable. Have a good laugh everyday and try to give myself a good mood.
I am trying to to the above things. But I am afraid that I am still fond of meat though don't eat as much as before.

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/24/2007 11:35:30 AM | I have started taking vitamins, and noticed positive changes in energy. I have noticed my energy has improved my workouts, at work and personal life.
My lifestyle has improved after going to naturopathetic/accupuncturist doctor and improved my eating habits.
My skin & hair feel softer. I take hot baths at the end of my day, mediate afterwards and sleep soundly throughout the night. I'm waking up refreshed.
I find it takes little effort to stay in positive attitude with the changes I made, and look forward to making improvements.

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/24/2007 2:12:23 PM | Statistically, Okinawa (one of the southern islands of Japan) has the most long-lived people in the world. I try to emulate their living habits as much as I can:
- Eating a high-protein, high-fiber, low-fat diet. Okinawa is a Pacific island and the people there tend to eat lots of fish and vegetables. Meats such as beef is difficult and expensive to obtain there.
- Keeping active. A lot of the healthy people who grew to ripe old age in Okinawa stay active all their lives-- They got eighty-year-old fishermen and farmers still getting up before dawn to earn their keep. My job does not demand that, but I try to keep active through regular exercise.
- Avoiding overindulgence. Moderation seems to be key-- You don't see long-lived people there in Okinawa getting drunk on Sake very often. Nor do you see many smokers. And definitely no recreational drug use.
- Being at peace and happy with what you do. Their work ethic is amazing.
I don't think I'll live to be a hundred, but I think I should be able to get most of a century.

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/24/2007 3:04:42 PM | | i have cut out fast foods and only eat out at a nice restaurant once every couple of weeks..now to start exercising more and partying less and then i will be on my way to excellent health!!!....lol... | |
|
| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/24/2007 3:26:34 PM | | I have chronic asthma and haven't had any major problems in over 10 years. I run everyday and use my inhaler 20 minutes before my runs to prevent any problems. In my opinion, eating right, exercise, and staying happy are the best medicines :-) | |

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/24/2007 4:57:24 PM | congrats on taking your health seriously.
1. No more DIET Sodas.............hear horror stories about aspertame??
bad stuff. giving soda in general is good. with an occasional mixed drink it isn't terrible, but the key is occasional.
2. No more Anti Inflamatories for pain....want to go the alternative route...any suggestsions?
check out your natural health store to find out other remedies. some foods provide anti inflammatory benefits. Gary Null's books might be helpful in that regard. otherwise do a search online and see what you come up. definitely check out a few places so that you have a reliable source.
3. Less use of Microwave....I dunno just doesn't sound good to begin with!!
good choice. using your toaster oven or regular oven is a good substitute.
4. Removing any/all of my mercury fillings (from old cavities.). There is lots of literature on this subject.
no comment on this one. haven't researched much about it.
5. Looking for deodorants with NO aluminum...leaks into breast area
again check your natural food/health store for more info. i have found the deoradant ones work great, but haven't really found a anti perspirant (sp) one. they don't seem to make them...
I have gone a bit far in the health approach to understand what is right for me. gave up milk/dairy. (though still eat some foods that have butter or other products in them, definitely sparingly). vegetarian and organic when I can and when it makes sense. walk as much as I can, drink tons of water (about half my body weight in ounces), subscribed to a health related newsletter. started yoga/meditation, no soda, natural products as much as possible.
|
| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/24/2007 5:13:02 PM | For the last 5 years I have not:
Drank anything other than water and skim milk. Eaten any fast food. Eaten any white bread or white pasta. Choose organic products when I can. Eaten chips or other junk along those lines
And now I am transferring from the job I work now to a similar one with better, less random hours so that I have more time and energy to start going back to the gym regularly.
|
| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/24/2007 9:18:32 PM | | No meat....no dairy...no gym either...outside exercise is the best for the brain (and many other parts)...fresh air....refreshes the brain and the body....gyms and stop clocks can't do that.....regardless...if you can't hear, listen, understand what your body is telling you, then all points are moot. | |

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/25/2007 6:46:32 AM | Hello Curious and Smart! Hello People - learning, thinking, reading, writing, participating, being heard, and wanting to be heard!
Something extraordinary good is happening and 'awakening' among all of us. I am happy to find the younger ones started to care and make enquiries into really good health and what it takes. For nothing is matter with poor health. And I would agree on prevention as the best taken direction. The mysery of old age could be and should be prevented. What a blessing to enjoy living days longer. And you are your own director and designer of your own life. Goody!
The best news as well as a sign of ultimate freedom - the choices available to us, the choices we make daily. And persisting on them. It usually 'returns' with handsome percentage later if not sooner.
So many good advice said above. Thank you, VitaminDoctor, for 'prescribing' a shower filter and good natural deodorant as colloidal silver. Never heard about this one. I use natural crystal stick - it's low-priced, doing the job and lasting forever.
Just few words from a native born Siberian survivor. It was not as tough though as it sounds. Hope it will help.
* Become an avid label-reader - on food you buy from supermarket, as well as on any toiletries you intent to put on the skin. Eat if you can afford only Organically produced food. It tastes much better and doesn't give the toxins as pesticide, or herbicide. The creams, the shampoos, all skin products with anything ending in 'paraben', Benzyl alcohol, Coal tar, Cocamide MEA, Cocamidopropyl betaine, DMDM hydantoin, Propylene glycol, Sodium laureth sulfate, Sodium lauryl sulfate - not so nice news for us, people, and for all animals involved, or any living/breathing things, because...
*...they are potent substances, so called Xenohormones ( sometimes they called VOC, or gender-benders...) They not found in nature and have strong hormonal effects on living things. They are 'stored' within body, because our body doesn't recognize them. They unfriendly 'aliens', hanging around,to put it with humour. The longer you expose yourself to them, the more -potentially - harm they can do. All Xenohormones should be considered toxic. The majority of them have estrogenic effects on both male and female bodies. They are extremely potent and are active in almost unbelievably small doses. And petrochemically derived Xenohormones are nonbiodegradable, so they will continue to accumulate in the invironment for as long as they are being manufactured. Xenohormones are fat soluble. so they pass easily through the skin, and they are cumulative as well, meaning they accumulate in the body over time. Therefore...
*...it is important to 'learn by heart', and in this case, ' by names', our agressive non-friends.
COMMON SOURCES of XENOHORMONES:
. Solvents and adhesives; . Petrochemically derived pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides; . Car exhaust; . Emulsifiers found in soaps and cosmetics; . Nearly all plastics (including our much 'loved' polyester fabric...); . Industrial waste such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins (red alarm!!!); . Meat from livestock fed estogenic drugs to fatten them up; . Synthetic estrogens and progestins found in the urine of millions of women who take birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which is flushed down the toilet and eventually works its way into the food chain. And that's how nutrition affects our hormone balance.
* Get to know the pioneering work of John R. Lee and his followers on nutrition, Xenohormones and 'de-toxifying' your home or flat where you spend a lot of time.
* Advice from wiser woman to curious and smart woman. Hold on dearly onto your dear friends uterus and the bounteous ovaries as long as you live. For that matter do NOT use birth control pills (synthetic estrogen) or HRT, at any time of your life. Reproduction organs cancers are 'artificially' induced and could be healed without 'cut-poison-burn' specialists with help of natural and women-friendly hormone progesterone as well as with change of nutrition and general approach to living. Care NOT to put tampones into another friend vagina, for she will NOT like it. Beyond rhythmicity, the heart and the uterus share another quality, their association with blood. Allow free flow. And the ecosystem of healthy vagina! When the balance of flora within vagina is upset the good lactobacilli start to founder. So, don't douche sacred inside, ever, period. Especially with industrial strength supermarket chemicals or tap water. Douching kills off the beneficial lactobacilli, 'lucky lactos'.Robust, healthy one smells and tastes as yogurt and wine. Wine-and-yogurt tarness! In fact, the idea of pairing wine and women isn't bad one, as the acidity of the vagina in health is just about that of a glass of red wine. This is the vagina that 'sings', the one with bouquet, with legs! Be the best friend to yours. Both will be glad. Another fine point to consider. The condom has inside-outside coating in spermicide, which is, once again, one of xenohormones, meaning synthetic estrogen. It does make sense to be with stable, long-term,trusworthy, loyal sexual partner and NOT use, or use rarely this petrolium resin thing. It is Not good chemical thing for men as much as for women. Good book to read about womanhood, woman's health is called 'Woman: An Intimate Geography' by Natalie Angier. Celebrate your miracle gift to the world and yourself - your womanhood!
Good luck in finding the one. And please be safe.

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/25/2007 4:24:09 PM | | I have always been pretty good about eating a healthy diet, but for the last couple months I wasn't getting to the gym as often as I like due to very long work days. Started to feel it, not only physically but my stress level went way up too. So I bought my own eliptical about two months ago. It is in the corner of my bedroom and I on it at least 5 times a week for at least an hour. I love it. No excuses. | |
|
| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/25/2007 8:08:28 PM | I never smoked. I stopped drinking at least 5 years ago. I never used illicit drugs.
I get STD tested regularly. I don't take vitamins. I don't use antibacterial soap. I don't get the FLU shot. I don't eat fast food.
I do eat a lot of extra lean ground chicken and beef and turkey.
I eat veggies such as tomatoes, cauliflower, cucumbers, garlic, peppers, carrots, onions, and brocolli. Sometimes I will be in the mood for frozen veggies.
I work out from 1 to 2.5 hours per day in the gym. I do a mix of cardio and strength training. In the summer, I was doing a lot of hiking. I still hike the odd time.
I must be doing something right because I am getting leaner and bigger. I don't take any of those supplements and I will NEVER go near steroids to bulk myself up.

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/27/2007 11:23:09 AM | 1. losing weight - benefit list is long.
2. cutting out trans fats
3. cutting out high fructose corn syrup
4. been taking a multi vit. for the last 15 years but have increased supplementation
5. monitor salt intake and sodium content of products
6. Sunscreen -been wearing it every day, rain or shine, for the last 10 years. With my pale skin I have to, and my sister is just an example of what can happen if you dont. Not to mention my mom who's had 2 melanomas removed.
7. Stopped using Crisco in anything and stopped having butter on anything.

Up to about 7 kliks a day presently. Lift weights 4x a week, not heavy, but light workout routine for toning mostly. Springtime will be doing some boxing training, heavybag, speedbag, and skipping. Summertime start diving.
Was looking into this P90X training system. The muscle confusion aspect looks quite interesting.

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 11/30/2007 12:08:39 PM | very good question: make sure and drink extra clean water. this is a complex subject, but has profound value, the basis of your entire body, vitality and health is the water you drink.
the best water -imo, even though it's a controversial topic- is a mix of distilled, add some spring water(10%), remineralize with a trace mineral supplement aiming toward something like gatorade with zero sugars or flavoring.
Pure distilled water is very unhealthy to drink, because it is so empty of minerals that it leeches them out of the rest of your body. but, if you re-mineralize it with good minerals, then it's much better than simple spring water. Tap water and spring are polluted with mineral content, rust, and other molecular debri - some good, some bad for you. If you pulled all the pollutants out of ten gallons, it looks like a tablespoon of mud - which normally goes into your body. That's what is gone from distilled water, but you have to put back in the minerals your body wants - aiming for water that functions like gatorade, to replace electrolytes and minerals. Pollutants affect your capillary circulation, they age you faster, cause kidney stones, gall stones, arthritis and similar depositing of the mineral waste throughout the body. Distilled water does not do this, but again, unless you put good minerals back into the distilled, it's bad for you.. that's why it's a controversial subject.. but if you want to prove to yourself, distill 10 gallons of spring water - then look at what was pulled out of that water - you will see the tablespoon of mud that was in the water, and my post will make more sense. Water is a vital subject for people who care about their health. In my experience few people actually get it right, though spring water and even britta are vast improvements over tap water. Britta gets 80% of the bad stuff out, and it's worth doing that if you have nothing else - ESPECIALLY if you have children drinking tap water - use a britta it's wise, until you get a better solution. And when someone tells you distilled water isn't good, I agree, unless you re-mineralize it being mindful of what your bloodstream would want - that's why you add electrolytes, minerals, and salts as your body would want in it's bloodstream.. then you can find that distilled is a good base, add minerals and electrolytes, you have gatorade without the sugar or flavor.. and it is truly better for you.. you can notice the difference in energy levels, because good minerals give you energy.. also there are other body functions that can reveal the health benefits of good water.. and over time, you'll age more gracefully, and have less or no kidney stone type problems, maybe even less arthritis which sometimes comes from water interactions depositing pollutants in arthritic zones.
again, this is controversial, so don't expect your doctor to agree with me, unless s/he's studied water a lot. But then ask that same doctor how much they know about herbs, you'll find a similar ignorance probably, coupled with a certainty that reflects ignorance. Not many doctors know perfect solutions for water, herbs, or natural healing, preventive health practices like these. But the benefits of good water are profound and long lasting, so it's worth the time to get good answers for yourself.
then add herbs, good love and friendships, etc.. and it's a prescription for a good life. blessings

Pure distilled water is very unhealthy to drink, because it is so empty of minerals that it leeches them out of the rest of your body.
Incorrect. Minerals get absorbed or they don't. What isn't taken up by the cells gets flushed out. All your mineral intakes can be established from the food in your diet. Drinking tap water or filtered water as a reliable source for your minerals is plain stupid. You would have to drink an absurd amount a day to reach the rda values.
All water does the same damn thing regardless of its state. The only difference is the quality you get. I drink distilled(i own one) mostly and have tap when im at work and do not have access to distilled. If your worried about the quality of your tap water, buy a filter or get your water sampled from a laboratory.
Say you workout in the heat or simply do lots of endurance training and you feel like you need more minerals or electrolytes. Simple, buy some cheap gatorade powder and make it a weak mixture so that your not getting a bunch of sugar but are getting a good mix of sodium and potassium. Any other time, you should drink w/e water is available to you.
Bottom line, eat your food for minerals and your vitamins. If you have deficiencys, adjust your diet or at the last step, supplementation may be required.
And the biggest thing is, DO NOT DRINK WATER WHEN EATING FOOD. Drink water in between meals. Your food is already being broken down by your stomach acid. Adding water dilutes the acid making it more base and that can cause digestive problems.
Hope this helps. | |

| what changes have u made for better health? Posted: 12/6/2007 7:05:52 PM | Great Topic :)
1. I left a toxic relationship and moved back home to be with my family and friends. 2. While I was a vegetarian for the past three years... I didn't cheat at all this year and had no desire to. (Also... it's so easy just to fill up on carbs as a Veggie... but now I make the effort to include non meat protein substitutes in my diet) 3. I drink less diet soda... cutting it out would make me crave it... it's a mind game of sorts. 4. I started running outside instead of on a treadmill at the gym. The fresh air and nature is sooooo healing. This way my dog gets to work off some of her energy too. 5. I did a toxin cleanse which helped a lot. 6. Less salt... (still trying to give up microwave popcorn) 7. More sleep! I try to go to bed early enough so I can wake up without an alarm clock and I get just the right amount for my body. 8. I started reading and writing again... you need to balance out strenuous exercise with relaxing activities. 9. Instead of the normal "stuff yourself until you burst" feast for Thanksgiving... I ran with 10,000 other nutcases at the Turkey Trot downtown. 10. Drinking less water... I used to drink 10+ glasses a day in addition to the water I drank while working out.. my body was drowning. 11. I carry around hand sanitizer in my purse now... it always seems to come in handy. 12. I accepted that I'll never be perfect... and that I'm not in control of everything and have started down my spiritual path.. less worrying... less obsessing and more peace. 13. I do my best to take a multi vitamin every day... find that it helps me avoid depression symptoms.
Still have a long way to go...
