| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/23/2007 9:17:14 PM | Hello & Happy Holidays!
I wanted to write this because, I have had a life long (well maybe not life long - lol) curiosity with the fascination behind this disgustingly gross green glop, that is so widely "loved" as a Holiday tradition! Aaaauugghhh! Being a woman who loves to cook and loves to eat, and being a very adventurous foodie with a very open minded yet distinguished palate, I would never embarrass my Holiday table with this goop and would never force my guests to take an obligatory dollop out of consideration for the hostess...Your thoughts???

Posted: 11/23/2007 9:34:36 PM | I truly believe that Green Bean Casserole is the most disgusting thing that has ever been put on a table....LOL I love green beans but they have to be cooked with seasoning and not combined with all the other "crap" that is put in that casserole....

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/23/2007 9:35:02 PM | That's so funny! It's obviously a dish that people either love or hate - my family is split about 50/50 - but I ADORE string bean casseerole, and eagerly look forward to it every year (and I'm elected to be the one to make it). I otherwise rarely eat string beans, although I love cream of mushroom soup, and the french fried onions in a can are similarly foreign to me any other time of the year. Your description is perfect - it's glop - but I love it!
My only defense it that it's a dish that goes back to every holiday dinner of my life, and I'm nearly 55! I can remember my grandmothers making it, my mother as well, and tonight, eating the leftovers, it was the best part of the whole leftover meal!
Ah well, there are no doubt favorites of yours that would be unthinkable to me - but that's what keeps us all so interesting, don't you think?

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/23/2007 9:44:03 PM | | OK...so I saw the recipe on TV and bought all the fixings to prepare this holiday dish....even those pre fried onions in the can...but when I brought it home and gathered my senses...I decided to go along with plain steamed and dressed up green beans...add a little olive oil, some salt and pepper and a dollop of butter, my green beans were great...just couldnt bring myself to kill such great veggies in a can of mushroom soup...I dont know who came up with the idea, but kuddos to them on great marketing skills. Keep it real and simple...works everytime! | |

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/23/2007 9:54:16 PM | Once or thrice a year I love it. But prefer when they arent overcooked. I like the french cut ones better. I almost bought a huge can of the french onions today as I saw they were on sale 2/5$.
If you make it right it shouldnt look like "green glop". It makes a great gravy substitute on potatoes.
My thoughts are that it is best with extra onion powder in it, it's really the salty onion flavor that makes it. It's half veggie, half snack food which is probably why it is so well liked. Sure better to have people liking this than so many other truly disturbing culinary creations like deep fried candy bars or twinkies.
Have we gotten so lazy we can't even make a proper dessert? If you must have deep fried why not a funnel cake? But for my fat calories I like cheese cake or pecan pie.
GBC is fine in moderation for celebration!

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/23/2007 11:03:06 PM | | Green Bean Casserole is one of the best traditions on our Thanksgiving and Christmas tables. It goes right along with turkey 'n dressing for Thanksgiving and ham and potato salad for Christmas. Fordhook lima beans. Brown 'n serve rolls. I'm getting excited just thinking about having all that great stuff again at Christmas. We only discovered Green Bean Casserole a few years ago but have had it regularly since. The green beans covered with the thickness of the soup and milk, and then the crunchy onion things on top...DANG!!!! | |

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/24/2007 1:34:23 AM | 1 (10 3/4 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup 1/4 cup milk 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans cut green beans, drained 1 1/3 cups French-fried onions (French's)
Combine soup, milk and pepper in a 1 1/2 qt baking dish; stir until blended. Stir in beans and 2/3 cup fried onions. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes or until hot. Stir. Sprinkle with remaining 2/3 cup fried onions. Bake 5 more minutes or until onions are golden.
Thats the pretty standard recipe for it. Not sure that it is verbaitm for the one printed on a can of French's fried onions, but its close.

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/24/2007 3:49:19 AM | My family loves it!!!
I DO cook my own green beans to use ahead of time, seasoning them the way I would if I were going to serve them plain....just a little water, 2 pieces of bacon, salt and pepper...and simmer till fork tender...not mushy...I too, use the soy sauce version of the recipe...My 17 year old daughter looks forward to it every year, and will make sure the leftovers are taken care of by the next day...I also serve a small bowl of the fried onions on the side for topping individual servings, for extra crunch. I agree that it may not be the most visually appealing thing on the table, but we think it sure is good!

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/24/2007 4:57:22 AM | I am guilty of being a member of a family who thinks a holiday is not a holiday without green bean casserole. Although, I now live in another state, in holidays past I usually also got to be the lucky person to be designated to bring it to family functions, also. We also never seem to be ones who eat it at any other time of the year, either!
Although, I have never tried the cream of celery variety, I do put soy sauce in mine and sometimes instead of using the regular french onions, i get the cheddar french onions instead. I have a close freind who hates mushrooms and prefers to make hers with the celery soup and tells me it's really good but I have never tried it that way. My boss's wife last Thanksgiving made hers with fresh green beans...I'd never had it that way before but it really was good!

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/24/2007 12:19:33 PM | | That is one of my favorite Thanksgiving treats my mom cooks for us. She uses French style green beans, French fried onions, celery soup and lots of garlic and pepper. And a little bit of milk and butter. Everyone seems to love it where I live. Perhaps it is dependant on the region in which you live. | |

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/24/2007 5:37:41 PM | It isn't very popular in this region, however, I have had it twice. Once with canned green beans......wicked gross...was like hot snot, with crunchy bits. Disclaimer....*** have never actually eaten hot snot..**
Second time it was made with frozen beans, chunks of fresh mushrooms, red onions,(french fried onions on top)and cream of chicken soup, pepper and a touch of garlic. The beans were still firm and very tasty. That is a recipe I would try again, perhaps even make myself, but that canned bean one.. now way, no how, no thank you.
The 2 times that I have had it were neither one at Holidays, and it wasn't served with turkey. Once was served with pork chops and the other ( better recipe) was served with a nice pork loin roast.

I make it every year and I like to add fresh bacon to it...... Makes for a nice flavor....

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/24/2007 10:46:46 PM | My sister makes it for the holidays. It's not my favorite, but everyone else seems to like it. Just give me plain green beans with a little bacon and a tater cut up in it and I'm happy-- specially if they're fresh garden beans.
Lola, you know what RK would ask you about your casserole.... tell! Inquiring minds want to know...

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/25/2007 12:17:39 AM | | i wasn't aware this was a holiday dish. i remember it coming out with Campbell soup recipes when i was very little. we also made it in college when we were poor and i think it was taught in home economics. back then, campbell soup and white bread had just gone gung ho marketing ( or is it dung ho) and it was a real treat. yik. if i did like it, i'd make it from scratch and leave out the chemicals. | |

| Question - Green Bean Casserole??? Yuck! What is the story??!??? Posted: 11/25/2007 12:39:42 AM | I can't say I am much of a fan either... the stuff I have had was easy to tell the individual ingredients and it was not green slop like described here... I'd say it was more liked scaloped potatoes or something... but again I usually pass on it..
I also wonder what the hell posessed someone to put marshmallows on yams/sweet potatoes.. ugggg that makes me want to vomit every time I see it.... well that and sorry I almost hurled thinking of it..... creamed corn.... I would rather eat those Austrialian witchetty grubs than creamed corn.... ugg it is just plain nasty.
