| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/25/2007 6:20:04 PM | Given the choice of dying now or living for ever (in your current state of health). What would you go for?
You have 30 seconds to decide!
Bear in mind there is no get out clause to the living for ever option. You have to watch your children die, your grand children die, perhaps the death of mankind.... for ever, meaning without end.

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/25/2007 6:33:54 PM | | DIE TOMORROW!!! The price of everything keeps going up, which means I'm gonna have to work even harder and longer to make ends meet. | |
|
| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/25/2007 7:05:18 PM | Live forever. Perhaps I would be able to change the course of humanity by discovering the cure for cancer. Maybe I could be the catalyst for world peace or end world hunger. Living forever could have many pleasant possibilities. | |

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/25/2007 7:08:20 PM | | I'll choose to live forever. I might seriously inconvenience a lot of people were I to die tomorrow. Whereas if I live forever the only person I inconvenience is myself. | |

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/25/2007 7:17:15 PM | Hmm... that's such a hard choice! I'm glad I don't really have to choose that... I probably would end up choosing living forever, but there's so much hardships associated with that... I probably eventually be driven mad... Madness or death... LOL which one is better? | |

I find this question a fascinating proposition, not least because of the way it can divide opinion and cause such passion. My experience has been how those that tend to answer "yes" are those that will tend to rush into situations and reap the rewards (and losses) and those that answer no tend to be the more cautious types, the sort that tend foresee all the problems before they occur.
For my part, it is an assured "die now". I love life, I really do, I just do not believe that the human mind can truly comprehend the concept of eternity
I heard this description of eternity from a parody of a fire and brimstone preacher on television. "Imagine the sun is a ball made of the hardest steel. A butterfly sets of from earth and flies the 96 million miles to get to the sun. When he gets there, he brushed the steel ball with his wing. He then makes the long weary journey home. Once home, he sets off once again to make the same journey and to once against brush against the sun. Eternity is how long it takes for the steel ball to be worn away."
Of course in reality this is not Eternity, it is not even a blink of an eye compared to eternity.
This little allegorical tale how ever did have a marked impact on me in thinking about the notion of "for ever".
I think in enough time anything and everything would loose value and meaning.
Life is wonderful and precious and part of that is bound up in that we (and our consciousness) are here for but a short time, and are part of a beautiful cycle of birth, life and death.
No, I not take my chances of for ever. I consider life precious and paradoxically, for me that means, if forced to choose. I'd go now.
Just as well, we can't really test the theory I think!

I see the choice as one between reality (death) and fantasy (eternal life). Being a realist, my choice is clear.... do we get to die in a manner of our choosing?

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/26/2007 4:42:02 PM | | I would die now; I don't want to live forever, and if there's no middleground, I'd take instant death right here, right now. | |
|
| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/26/2007 6:21:27 PM | I have to make way for the new. Living forever in this transparent realm is not an option. | |

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/26/2007 10:07:52 PM | That choice is easy, I'm currently fit, healthy, young and strong. Live forever! Not to mention I would easily be considered a god since according to the OP I cannot die, and proving to the gullible masses of humanity I'm a deity worthy of worship could prove amusing. | |

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/27/2007 4:36:38 AM | Well, considering I believe that once dead, you are nothing. I would be more or less forced into choicing to live forever.
I am not enthralled by this idea, and I'm also not 100% sure that I'm even right that nothing awaits us after the body dies but void. Still considering the stakes, I'm forced to take the safer gamble of staying alive then risking nothingness.
While I haven't actually lived...several thousand years I'd imagine it'd be pretty much the same as living 21 years. Do shit to keep yourself amused, learn things, and pretty much keep putting one foot in front of the other. What other choice would the eternally alive have?
You could probably freeze yourself and just wait to regain consiousness...cause why the hell not? Its just an endless cycle of moods and finding things to do. Plus you know...money would never be an issue since you could just not eat or house yourself, or if you felt like living well.....sort of like the Highlander @_@ You could just save all your money up from the many jobs you'd work...I mean who wouldn't higher you...Think of all the Experience you could list!
Past the point of human civilization would get tricky, no other humans to talk with and add that of so wonderful sense of the unexpected to your life. At this point you'd probably go insane without human contact. After this...well...thats where eternity kicks in. This is where the regret over your long made choice would surface, probably ending up in a total detatchment from reality as you floated in the endless vaccum of space, considering eventually the Earth will explode, and baring any advance in interstellar travel, is where you'd end up. Even so, stretching this to its logical conclusion would put you at the universes end...if it does infact end?!?!!
Anyways, you'd probably spend a lot of time floating around in space and crashing into random stars/planets until they exploded and you were thrown off into space again. This endless journey would pretty much be the equivilant of a void until perhaps the off chances of more social contact was made...and depending on your mental state that might not be so pretty.
But unfortunatly prediction breaks down at this point, and you can't really know what would happen to you. Whether or not the universe has a finite life span, or simply goes on and on, and what it would mean for the you, the eternal person to exist without a universe....essentially you'd become the universe.... thats trippy.
Your a crazy son of a **** question master man...I wonder if anyone will actually read all of this?

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/27/2007 2:12:20 PM | I also would have to choose life. I can't know what eternity would be like but I am fairly certain what death is like (nothing). I would not sacrifice my life for a fear of something I can not know. I would risk it.
I would start practicing meditation to carry me through the slow bits.

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/27/2007 4:40:58 PM | die now for death really is stepping into eternity, after all.....becoming one with everything....and nothing. entering the void. part of me so loves being here, but another part can't wait to see what comes next. watching the world's total destruction would be too heart breaking. | |

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/27/2007 9:46:14 PM | | Very interesting question, especially since Buddha rejected both extremes as untrue. Everything changes form and content constantly. I've been so affected by listening to "No Death, No Fear" by Thich Nhat Hanh that I can't quite believe in the question enough to answer. Guess I'm just going to fade to gray... | |

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/28/2007 4:08:11 AM | | We were born with the desire to live here on earth, but unfortunately I do not want to live if everyone I have ever loved has to die. I would rather die first than to experience that, and to see the the devastations of the end of the world. How lonely that would be to live forever. | |
|
| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/28/2007 4:43:43 AM | | Live forever, no question. A lifetime is not enough to do everything I want to do. | |
|
| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/28/2007 6:26:57 AM | i am not to take chance to live for ever, i consider life precious and paradoxically, but i am trying to say is i am too young to die, i haven't experience my rewarding life even though i don't expect to live forever, thats would be my punishment.
life is complicated experience, to be easy for your live, just to develop one attitude to accept everything you have and could have. live in simple way, be one normal person to have normal life.
|
| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/28/2007 11:06:04 AM | To quote one of my favourite authors...
"Life never bores. Always there is something new to experience."
I'd want to live forever.

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/28/2007 9:41:40 PM | I'm a curious sort of person, so I always want to see the end of the story. If I die now I don't get to see the end of the show. Darn!
Reminds me of when I was a kid. We used to go to the movies every Saturday, and they had these serials. Each week it would end with the hero in a dire predicament, and you could hardly wait until next week to see what happened. Of course, somehow things resolved themselves, only to turn into yet another insoluble dilemma. Just like real life!
So I'll take the long term approach, and choose to live forever. When this planet goes, I'll have plenty of time to move on and find another. No rush!

| Die Now or Live For Ever Posted: 11/29/2007 2:20:39 AM | This is a difficult choice.. I value my life..I am healthy and have a good life, so would not like to give it up. On the other hand, I would not like to see my love ones die around me. I lost my mom last year and I am still grieving. So to see everyone die, it be soul destroying. I am glad I have mortality... I choose to live for ever and tell all my love ones to do the same | |
