| | Dominican Republic or Cuba?Page 1 of 3 (1, 2, 3) | For those of you who have traveled to both countries, what would you recommend? I'm looking for a winter get-away in February and I need some advice. I'm looking for sun, sand, swimming, and dancing!
Has anyone gone to "Blue Bay Getaway Villas Doradas" in Puerto Plata? Thank you.

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 12/28/2007 11:35:56 PM | | I haven't been to Cuba yet - but I was in Puerto Plata this past March. It was wonderful. The people were really friendly, the resort was just OK (the Holiday Village). The beaches weren't as white as I hear Punta Cana is - however it was quite fun, there were a lot of things to do once you left the resort (city tours, the waterfalls). | |

Best holiday ever for beach and culture!!! Its like going back in time. Dominican is not so good, Bit more dirty plus you have to watch the locals too.

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 12/29/2007 4:53:30 PM | | Cuba definitely. I the US in most cases we are prohibited to travel to Cuba. I have heard all awesome things about their resorts but due to some political reasons Americans can't do it now... | |

For my fellow Canadians, take advantage of our strong Canadian dollar and travel this winter. I hope this thread provided you with some travel ideas.
Have fun on your travels!!! I wish everyone reading this thread, a Very Happy New Year!! P.S. Keep the comments coming.

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 12/30/2007 7:45:52 AM | I've been to both places 4 times. You cannot beat the beaches in Cuba. Much nicer than Dominican. As for adventure and excursions Dominican would have more( not to say how safe some of them are, lol) But if your going for the beaches and beautiful sand and snorkling then you want Cuba. Cayo coco area is beautiful. There's a resort called Villa Covaruvious not sure of the spelling. No shopping or anything to do there, but the beach is worth it and goes for miles. Happy travelling | |

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 1/2/2008 10:32:43 PM | coming from an agent...the majority of our clients prefer the DR to cuba...fave destinations in DR are punta cana and sosua, over puerto plata. we sell DR at a rate of about 3:1 over cuba. more clients make repeat trips to DR as well.
my personal preference is the DR...
a lot depends on what your imperatives are...beach ?? meals ?? shopping ?? off-resort points of interest ??
|
| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 1/3/2008 3:57:17 AM | Ah one more for DR. Wavelady, as a normal guy my imperatives include all the above except (except) shopping. Replace shopping with dancing. One last question have you heard anything about "Blue Bay Getaway Villas Doradas" in Puerto Plata?
Thanks again for your input!

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 8/18/2008 4:10:34 PM | So which one did you pick??? I've been to both....DR once, Cuba 7 times. Guess my fav? lol | |

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 8/20/2008 7:46:08 AM | I'm envious the rest of the world has the option of going to Cuba-we Americans are not allowed.... If I could, I would go to Cuba before it opens up and becomes South-Miami- I'd like to see it before it changes | |

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 8/20/2008 7:47:49 PM | Still Standing,
I chose DR in the end, and had an excellent time. Maybe I should choose Cuba this year. I'm looking for more night life to enjoy this time. Any suggestions for a specific location that has beautiful beaches and some fun night life close by?
|
| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 8/27/2008 10:21:07 AM | I went to the Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado, Dominican Republic. you cant beat it. Check out some pictures and I have a good trip :)

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 9/10/2008 8:18:13 PM | Cuba is unspoiled, a beautiful destination. However, the Domincian Republic especially Punta Cana, is a very beautiful area. White sand beaches, casinos, night life, plenty to do from water activites to land. If you like night life, both island are great. Dominican Republic in the resort areas, Punta Cana to the south, caribbean side, to the North Puerta Plata, that is the Atlantic Side. The water is rougher, but good fishing. If you like to golf, it is available in both locations. Personally, I liked the Dominican Republic, however it is becoming more commericalized, so if you want to get away from that then you might want to go to Cuba.
Both are great picks! | |

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 9/11/2008 9:54:02 AM | | You can travel from Cancun to Cuba on a charter flight! No passport is stamped... | |
|
| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 9/11/2008 10:49:49 AM | I have traveled extensive and my favorite beach in Punta Cana, DR, The Barcelo Bavaro area...You will find me at the Beach resort or Palace...But get ready for the lobster tail on the beach at the Garden Hotel Resort...
Pay for 1 and play at 5 except the dining at the Palace in the specialty restaurants unless staying there...
One of the MOST beautiful beaches in the world lies at the Barcelo Bavaro...The beach doesn't drop 2 or 5 feet as you walk out, it is gradually...
On the grounds it offers the following: ncasinos, clubs for dancing, shows, watersports and para-sailing at sunset. OH, MY GOODNESS...You can purchase excursions to swim with the sharks...it's not like swimming with the sharks and stingrays in Belize but....great...Golfing at the Melia Caribe Tropical Resort was excellent and a beautiful resort...But the only fall backs were only a few oceanfront or oceanview rooms and resort so HUGE ...
Sosua and the Puerto Plata is nice but you will experience a heavy undertow and huge waves for surfers...

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 9/11/2008 9:33:21 PM | amuzeme1972 Thank you for the excellent input, and from a travel consultant as well. Punta Cana sounds very tempting. For me; music, a few drinks and dancing beside the beach with that special woman would be a perfect way to spend an evening in the DR. | |

I'm envious the rest of the world has the option of going to Cuba-we Americans are not allowed.... If I could, I would go to Cuba before it opens up and becomes South-Miami- I'd like to see it before it changes .
Americans are allowed to go to Cuba, there are just no flights from America to Cuba. For heavens sake, you are an American, it's a free country. Your country does not forbid you to go anywhere in the world, and Cuba welcomes you. If you want to go to Cuba, leave the US first. And if someone has told you it will be a problem returning to the States with a Cuban stamp on your passport, that is not true.
|
| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 9/16/2008 8:08:23 PM | ismene1, be careful with your advice. It is not correct. Certainly, there are those that try to get around the American law the way you recommend, but if you are ever caught, the price is high.
I'm a Canadian and certainly free to go where I please, as long as the other country welcomes me. However, I have many American friends, lawyers and government agents among them. I guarantee you, that as an American travelling to Cuba through another country, you can be caught. Sure, you may not be caught, but you can be. At least one of my friends has paid the price and he knows others that paid more.
I think Cuba is a lovely country; I certainly enjoyed myself and have Canadian friends that can't get enough of the place. I'll return myself one day, but for my American friends, sorry, sorry about the situation.

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 9/21/2008 9:09:09 PM | | Ive been to Veradero...it was beautiful...but the way the currency went there...sucked. They use 2 currencies...the Peso...and the tourist Peso...which was valued at $1.25 US. In a poor country, you would think they would take the Canadian dollar with open arms. I found it all to be a scam... I would go to Dominican Republic myself next time... | |

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 11/24/2008 9:41:41 PM | | Why does it have to be one or the other? Go to Punta Cana and then from there fly to Havana. | |

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 11/29/2008 6:29:07 AM | I have been to both countries several times each. It depends on what you are looking for. Cuba is very interesting politically because it is Communist. The music in both countries is fabulous. Dominican Republic is more breathtaking in terms of the scenery and I find the food better quality. Both countries are wonderful and interesting. Find out what deals you can get. That may make the decision for you. Many Canadians go to both countries.

| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 11/29/2008 4:48:16 PM | Did you end up going to Blue Bay Villas? I just came back from there last month, I thought it was pretty good.
I've been to both Cuba and the Dominican Republic (Puerto Plata and Punta Cana), and they're both great places with wonderful people. I think the only major difference between the places for me was the food.. there's less variety and quality in Cuba, but there's always something to eat :)
|
| Dominican Republic or Cuba? Posted: 11/29/2008 11:05:18 PM | Yes, I did go to Blue Bay resort and it was good. I also did the outback safari thing which I would highly recommend. On the safari I met two couples from "Ottawa" (my city), who were extremely friendly, but they were not staying at my resort (too bad).
Thanks for the comment about the food, because it's important to me to be able to enjoy good food, while I'm traveling.
