| Gift idea for a 2 year old Posted: 12/10/2007 7:21:36 AM | I'm getting a gift via what we call the angle tree at work for a year old. Can a parent of a two year old tell me what you would appreciate getting? What's hot this year in that age range? Any suggestions will help a lot.

You will hate the truthfulness of my answer: Boxes. My experience with giving 2 year olds presents is that invariably you buy them a big fairly spendy gift and they take it out, set it aside, their they go back to the box and proceed to sit in it. Stand in it. Put it over themselves. The ones with the shiny plastic window are the best, though. Their little one piece clothing with built in feetsies make them slide like they are walking/crawling nowhere. That is always the funniest. Several of these have made America's Funniest Videos, even!
Want to buy them a truly great present? Get them a savings bond and on it mark "For College ONLY" and then include with it a toy from the local dollar store. Any bank will help you get a savings bond. It's always half value so $50 is bought for $25, 25 for $12.50...etc.
I got my one year old niece for her first birthday a $100 savings bond marked for college and something small on the side. The little "Golden Books" even if they are too young are great because it encourages parents to read to them if they're too young to read themselves. They love seeing the pictures and learn to tie emotions to the characters expressions. Books might be a little much for a 2 year old, depends on how enthused the family is about reading. Kids that age love chasing bubbles!
What not to buy: Anything that fits into or has parts that fit into a toilet paper tube. It's a choking hazard.
Parents also really appreciate DVDs, even at that age, because they can set the kid in front of it and walk away and get dinner made knowing the kid usually won't get into too much trouble. The Bratz are big lately, but the classics like Winnie the Pooh, Snoopy/Peanuts, Cat in the Hat are always good.
A lot of this depends on the parenting style. Oh what else is trendy lately are those one toys with the big rubber nubs that vibrate/light up/make noise when touched. They double as a teething tool. Also the pull along toys at this age because they are walking and need to develop improved balance and coordination. Like the old fisher price deal you push/pull and the colored balls pop around inside. Also the toys that get pulled or pushed, catapillars, trucks/cars for boys. Hot Wheels would be a no no. Too small. Think very very simple stuff. Things that make noise or light up when pushed or pulled. They will easily grow into those and use them for several years. They are so proud of their little abilities at that age. They will look back and say "Look at me" as they go down the hall pushing the little popping colored balls in the clear globe thing. My niece did, it was funny and cute, that little ham.

| Gift idea for a 2 year old Posted: 12/11/2007 5:26:01 AM | I have a two year old. He loves his Magnadoodle, trucks, trains and children's books with trucks and trains in them.
As for clothes, he likes bright colours and fuzzy soft texture. He loves silk also to curl up in and sleep - though I wouldn't recommend it as a gift.
Anything that makes musical noise is great for him. He'll play Harmonica, his toy Piano, toy Xylophone, and his Recorder all day long, given half a chance. Loves Drums and Bongos.
My 2 year old nephew is much the same. I have no idea about girls though. Go Bright, Shiny, Noisy and Durable.
The other favourites are boxes, tins filled with rice, bubble wrap, hammers, keys, the fridge door and the squeaky hinge on my hammer tool box. Oh, and beating on the ammunitions case I keep my carbide chisels in with a hammer from the hammer box... These are the unacceptable donations... (somehow people have a problem with kids and hammers...even neoprene mallets)

| Gift idea for a 2 year old Posted: 12/11/2007 1:49:18 PM | | Two year olds love anything that makes noise, though the parents don't always love it. If it's a little girl cute and fuzzy animal toys can never go wrong nor can baby dolls. Little boys love any sort of Legos or blocks. I wouldn't worry about what's "hot" this year because two year old kids don't really care as long as they get a toy or toys for Christmas. As someone else said clothes are always a good idea for growing kids. Angel tree should have sizes or what not on there, but if not guess, and don't worry if it's big cause they'll always grow into them. | |
