Are geeks the new chic?
Posted: 12/13/2007 6:26:26 PM
It appears The Today Show has had a weeklong extravaganza on love, sex and dating. Today's topic was, "Why are geeks the new chic?" The interview talked about how more and more women supposedly like those of us of the geeky variety (In the interests of full disclosure, I do not consider myself a true geek even though I do work in IT. I prefer the term "geek in training" as I'm always learning something new)

Rather than ask the usual, "Do women find geeky men attractive?", I'm posing a slightly question. In fact, it's the title of this thread: Are geeks the new chic? If so, is this just a fad thanks in part to Napoleon Dynamite and that horrific show 'Beauty and the Geek', in a similar manner that the metrosexual was a fad not too long ago, or are women (and men) coming around to those in the world who were/are the perpetual outcasts? Or maybe, because it seems to be the trendy thing, are women just finding geeks to go out with to say they've dated a geek? Or some combination thereof?

Finally, this statement about geeks was in the article. Do you ladies agree, disagree or partially agree with the statement:

On the whole, geeks are sweet, scarysmart guys, who, if they choose you --- and you choose them back --- will devote every fiber of their being to making you happy. If you've got that, in my opinion, the rough edges can be buffed and polished.

I was married to a geek. So I feel competent to comment on this.
I think that it is a media gimmick. Geeks are becoming more mainstream (all companies have an IT department, computers are a part of our daily lives). More men consider themselves geeks then ever before. 20 years ago, what would a geek have been? Maybe working in telephone companies or some technical job. It wasn't such a big industry. The size of the industry boomed and there are more guys in the industry. So, you (as a woman) are more likely to date a geek.
Thank you for reading my rambling, I'm done now.....I think.

Then again, some of us don't mind being corrupted. In fact, we might be the ones doing the corrupting.

QFT. In addition, with videogames getting more widespread acceptance and the popularity of manga and anime among the younger generation, ANYONE can be considered a geek now.

Yes, Geeks are the new chic. But only because they make 6 figure incomes.

When septic tank cleaners make 6 figure incomes, they will become the new chic.

Too right.
And we girls like having free tech support around. (sadly, I have in fact chosen potential boyfriends based on their ability to fix my computer without breaking it in the process...I love my computer, sometimes more than my dogs)

Damn, I shouldn't have gotten rid of my pocket protector, slide rule and horn-rimmed glasses (with tape in the middle).

Seriously though, I think I was more hated than desired when I was working IT before I went back to school and switched to my current career.. Whenever someone has computer problems you can guess who gets blamed.

^^Let's get it straight that it's the money geeks make and power they get that's attractive, not the actual geek him or herself.

Twenty years ago, the geeks were called nerds, and before that, they were the squares, and before that? Dummies. The day they become chic? I am leaving town and heading to my tropical island.

No geeks are not the new chic.

geeks these days are hopelessly addicted to mmo's like world of warcraft .

To them that shit is better than sex. like crack cocaine.

just google up "widows of warcraft" and you will see just how chic the "new" geek is.

Six figure incomes??? yeah right...

You are totally correct about the WoW, AND about Widows of Warcraft. I am one.

And my ex SO was a geek.

And he made a six figure income.

And he definately thought that WoW was better than sex. After all, it WAS sex.

Okay for myself I often get teased quite a bit because the guys I tend to date are usually on the 'geeky'/dorky side.

So this is all news to me that geek is the new chic... if it is I am ahead of the times.

These "geeks"(btw I saw what you are posting about) are good hearted people (hell I think I am one) who in my opinion are often misunderstood and/or not even given a chance. If they don't have bodies of 'greek gods' or aren't the width of a small branch they all too often aren't given the time of day. I can honestly say I am one of a small few that choose to actually look at the person as a whole... starting with what they can offer me intellectually. Personality is so important to me and the 'geeks' often have it in spades. I then go from there... attractivness is often for myself determined once I know a person... (I won't lie and say there doesn't have to be some sort of attraction).

I really think the guy from Beauty and the Geek.. Josh (I think) is a cutie... would have to loose the 'murse' but other than that... the thing with the butterflies... would have swept me away.

Thats my rant .

There are a variety of "Geeks". Most people just see them as video game players/WoW obsessed people and this is not the case. Anything can make you a geek. I'm a video game geek, but I don't sit there and play it all the time. I just have a vast knowledge of video games. Same goes for a lot of TV/Movies.
I have random info that if I told you, you would be like "Wow...That's...cool. I guess." or something along those lines. I've dabbled in WoW, didn't grab me too much. I have a 360 and other systems, but I don't constantly play them and have my life absorbed by them. Does that mean I'm not a geek? Sure, I don't make 6 figures, but I'm just starting off in my job so I have to work my way up the ladder. Bookworms could be considered geeks. You become a geek if you have a passion for something. Usually those geeks that aren't anti-social/anti-people will take that passion and delegacy and change them over into the relationship to make their partner feel wanted and needed, because for some of us 'geeks' it's hard for us to even get a relationship. So about all this 'OMG! ALL GEEKS DO IS SIT AROUND THE HOUSE AND PLAY WOW ALL DAY!!!' Not true. We're everywhere, but we are hidden amongst you.

Alright, this is simple: geeks aren't "chic" - people like to use that cliche 'cause it rhymes and sounds clever - but trust me, being a geek hasn't been, and definitely still is not cool. (Especially when all they're referring to is the male model in the background showing off a bluetooth headset or wireless iPod remote)

Sorry, video games != geek. video games are just the newest sport. Less physical thats all.
Well video games used to equal being a geek - unfortunately they've now been absorbed into popular culture a lot (enter the frat guys yelling insults at each other while they play the latest Madden release).

Six figure incomes??? yeah right...

I believe the correct word for this post is "ignorance."

I'm a geek, albeit in many ways not a stereotypical geek. I work in a geeky industry, so I also work with many geeks. The vast majority of said geeks are NOT addicted to WoW. They do play games, but almost universally would rather have sex. There are men at my work that women tend to drool over for how they look physically, and there are women there who men tend to drool over...they're mostly all still geeks.

A good percentage do make six figure incomes, and I think that's becoming more common in high tech industries where geeks tend to work. It's certainly more prevalent in high tech to have a six-figure income than, say...in the restaurant business.

Personally I haven't seen women becoming any more or less attracted to (us) geeks, so I don't know the answer to the OP except that maybe it is just something for the media to talk about.

Ignorance, yeah right...

9 million geeks subscribing to warcraft. Granted not all subscribers are hopelessly addicted to their guilds, raiding and would ignore their SO. but a lot would and do...

You said it yourself...you are not a stereotypical geek...are you sure you even qualify as geek? maybe you are just a nerd in disguise.

In my experience, geeks DO NOT make six figure salaries and tend to lose their sweethearts to hardcore game addiction.

Just because you answer IT tickets doesn't make you a geek. I know a lot of ladies who work in tech that are the farthest thing from a geek. They work their 9-5, then go out and live life like a real woman....not go home and raid for 10 hours.

Maybe you misclassified yourself son.
