For those of us in the western world.

Who likes it & what do you listen to, & how did you get into it?

I like it, got into it via anime & my brother. He gave me a hard drive full of anime so I watched it (as you do) and got hooked on a few songs. Got the ambums and it just went off from there. I am now learning Japanese!

The Sensee's daughter is cute!

lol Seriously though, she's too young for me (18 but I'm 26!)

I also listen to:

Fictionjunction Yuuka
Mikuni Shimokawa
Yoko Takahashi
Tiaraway
Origa (Technically Russian I know but does do Japanese!)

Listened to some Animetal by Eizo Sakamoto as well but not really my thing.

Anybody else?

I can't speak for myself, but I know that my sister certainly loves Japanese music.

Mostly she listens to J-Pop, and she makes me laugh hysterically when she shows me music videos of boy bands and pretends they're the Beatles.

Anyway, that stuff does have a habit of bringing a random smile to someone's face, but it is also sometimes very strange when they go into English and say things that make very little sense within the song, or even within the language.

I hate most J-pop, it's usually just vacuous with repetitious hooks and poor singing/instrumentation. I lived in Japan for years and had to endure that crap blasting everywhere all of the time. Japanese hip-hop though is good, some to check out: Rappagariya, Lamp Eye, Rino, Rhymester, Muro, Buddha Brand. There are some also really good Japanese musicians; for example, the guitarist Char is criminally underrated. Hard rockers should really be checking him out.

That the Guitarist Char you were talking about? I know it is in English but I did find a few subbed into Japanese things with him. I think he could have sung in the same concert as Yoko Takahashi once......

If I have the wrong person, could you please give me his full name so that i can look him up? Thanks.

Yeah, that's him. I met him at an interview I assisted with and he's a really nice guy, very laid-back.

Hiroshima is an American group, they are all of Japanese ancestry.

Alright, excellent topic, let's see... (and yes, I realize most of these are composers that do soundtracks - that's just what I like)

This list is only artists whose music I like as a whole, no one with just one or two singles I liked

Yoko Kanno (with or without Seatbelts, everything she's ever done is incredible, hands down)
Kenji Kawai (ditto)
Origa
Joe Hisaishi
Kuniaki Haishima
Shigeru Umebayashi
Taku Iwasaki
Tsuneo Imahori
Yasunori Mitsuda (Creid is an incredible album)
Yuki Kajiura (unfortunately her music tends to all sound the same, she needs to mix it up just a little)
Ko Utani (aka Kow Utani)
Nobuo Uematsu (of course)
Hitomi Kuroishi (aka Hitomi) / Dolce Triade
Mika Nakashima
Angelina (Angelina Esparza)

well... Kumi Koda's music is just awful, but she's fun to look at

I got into the band "Maximum the Hormone" from watching the anime "Death Note." (Which is an awesome anime, by the way.) I'm not really sure how to describe them... I suppose you can say they are "Japanese screamo"?

I normally don't like screamo since you can't understand a word they're saying, but there's something about the fact that they're screaming AND it's in a different language that makes me like their stuff. They're so incomprehensible, it's good.

I donno... I can usually understand when they're rapping about their bling bling, their pimpin' cars and their big booty ho's... Though I wish I didn't...

I haven't kept up on the rap scene since 2001'ish... has it changed since then?

Hey, no sidetracking and talking about western hip-hop here!

In addition, the first person to mention they love the musical stylings of Gackt gets an irritated stare and subsequent sarcastic eye roll from me.

I too love japanese music
For me J-rock
Some people need too look beyond the theme songs of anime
Great bands are waiting!

My favorites
-Dir en Grey ( Ahh they are awesome, I find rock, heavy metal music from japan to be beautiful. I want Kyo's children.)

-X Japan ( Original, thats for sure, Amazing stuff, disbanded, but touring US some time this year, without Hide-San (Hee-day) Because of his death 10 years ago)

-Buck Tick ( Recently gotten into them, also very orginal, all in their 40's, but youd never guess...Dir en grey's Idols)

-Alice nine ( are sorta visual kei, and their music goes from pop to metal. Interesting mix. Visual kei is not really common anymore, but carry it out well)

My favorite songs from the

Dir en Grey- Woah. To many to list, but,..
-Kodou
-Merciless Cult
-Obscure (very crazy..check out the video on youtube)
-Drain Away

X Japan- Forever Love, Endless Rain , The last Live

Buck Tick- Romance..Ahh very amazing, Alice in Underground..I think

Alice Nine- Q (Very addictive)

Hope I helped!
btw..Its Sensei..Sorry, Im a grammer nut

O my, Gackt, He's crazy, I cant stand him, or Malice Mizer, they're horrible. I do like Mana thugh, And Kami, because he died. I do respect them as musicians, but their songs are irritating.

The only Japanese CD I have is from a group called Hi-Standard. I like it though, they are a really tight group on CD and the songs sound great!

I listen to all sorts of music, but Japanese music holds a special place in my heart... sounds cheesy I know, but Japanese music really inspires me.

The phenomenal musician known as Gackt, would be who I listen to most.
He's actually my favourite musician of all time (Sorry Bowie!!!).

For those who have no idea who Gackt is, he's said to be the Japanese David Bowie.
He composes his own lyrics and music, and plays an assortment of instruments.
Gackt is also one of the few musicians I know of, who has delved into so many different genres of music, and still produces amazing work. He is an awesome performer who puts his all into every performance, and every side project he has done. So you can see why he's compared to Bowie.

Aside from Gackt, I listen Nobuo Uematsu (genius behind all the Final Fantasy tracks!! among many other video games and movies), X-Japan, Leslie Cheung, Andy Lau, T.M. Revolution, Mika Nakashima, Ayumi Hamasaki, Puffy AmiYumi, Hyde, Luna Sea, L'arc~en~Ciel, Dir en Grey, Koda Kumi, and so many others.

I pretty much fell in love with Japanese music since the first day they showcased on our television, a woman sitting in her kimono playing the koto. I was very young then.

I listen to some japanese music. I'm a big Dir en grey fan, and I like some Orange Range. Besides that I can't say I like alot more. I usually end up liking german music like E Nomine and Rammstien more. But japanese music is pretty good. :)

I can't stand annoying Otaku music like Dir En Grey and L'ar cen Siel (whatever you spell it)!

I prefer bands like Melt-Banana or F**k on the Beach!

I'm not a massive fan of J-pop, though it's alright occasionally. I watch anime from time to time, so generally just listen to stuff I'm already familiar with from that. I listened to Utada Hikaru's last album too, wasn't too fussed with it.

Plus-Tech Squeeze Box are the best of the quirky stuff I've heard. I listen to Dir en Grey too, but they're not the best metal band I've ever heard by any means.

I love my noise though, and Japan is really miles ahead of the competition in these respects. Melt-Banana are my favourite band ever, I can't wait till I finally get to see them live in the UK in a few months. I have to travel miles to see them though, which is annoying.

I don't get on with the harsh noise stuff so well (by which I mean Merzbow), but Boris with Merzbow's "Rock Dream" collabiration is absolutely stunning, even if having a 35 minute opening track is a tad excessive...

I honestly consider Boris one of the most creative bands in rock music today. How one band can switch styles across albums so drastically yet excel at each is beyond me.

Also been checking out Ruins lately, they're pretty sweet. Mentions must go to Afrirampo and Acid Mothers Temple for their awesomeness. Boredoms too, but to be honest, I prefer OOIOO...
